So just what is Assassin's Pledge?
Assassin's Pledge is a fictional story revolving around a central character named Shadow. His life and history are a mystery to all but those who know him, and he is known the world over as "The Red-Eyed Demon". Through his efforts and sacrifices, the continent of Cre' Est and its people will know both balance and salvation as he brings destruction upon the very organization which created him.
How is this different from Assassin's Creed?
The sad fact is that the name, story, and main character list for Assassin's Pledge existed in my mind long before I was able to give it form, and that came about some two years before Assassin's Creed 1 hit the scene on the Xbox 360 and PS3, so this story technically came first. I know that the names are very similar, but again, the fact is that this story existed in my mind before Assassin's Creed came along. Also, they share no similarities other than the name. The setting, plot, characters and message are completely different.
To begin with, unlike Assassin's Creed this story doesn't portray Assassins as heroes. Some are, in fact, the most dangerous of adversaries and do all they can to guard the truth from the eyes of humanity for the sake of furthering their own power and influence. The Assassins of Te'i Sai, the organization which created Shadow, are one such group of adversaries. The five Grandmasters have put their own pawns into positions of power so that all decisions made by the rulers of the five nations which span the continent are actually theirs to make and manipulate.
Exactly what kind of world is this?
The world of Assassins Pledge takes place in a time period similar to what we know as the middle ages. The simple rifle is still the pinnacle of weapons technology, with a few experimental weapons coming along here or there to bring a new level of danger and power to the game. Most true warriors fight with a blade, with honor and pride dictating their paths as they walk the empty roads towards their futures.
However...
This world is also in a state of complete and utter chaos. Thanks to the Assassins of Te'i Sai, the world is falling apart for the poor citizens of the continent's five nations. Their rulers are but puppets to ruthless dictators who dwell in the shadows, though they do not know it. Every day, corrupted guards and high ranking officials in political office take advantage of their status and power by both butchering and belittling the people they were meant to protect. The world is turned upside down as bandits, thieves, Assassins, mercenaries, bounty hunters, and more all fight for supremacy and status as warriors while the politicians fight for wealth and power.
Without true leaders to guide them, the people are lost and desperate for a world that actually has a future.
How can I involve myself in an RP such as this successfully?
And excellent question!
But it has a simple answer.
This world is far too violent and cruel to harbor the weak, and so characters who are not warriors of some sort are not recommended. As best you can, create a warrior of some kind. One who can hold their own in a fight, one who is eager to learn and improve, and one who can take physical abuse and keep on giving it right back. There are not going to be any Gods in this RP, and therefore no god-moding of any kind will be tolerated. The kind of character you choose for yourself will dictate how powerful they can become and how they will fare against the most powerful of archetypes: the Assassins.
What makes these Assassins so great and why is it that I have to try to measure up to them??
Another excellent question!
This one is a bit tricky, so I ask that you have patience as you continue reading...
The Assassins of Te'i Sai, the most powerful Assassin Organization in the world, are the top predators of the human world today in this RP's fantasy world. The have attained what can be considered close to the zenith of human potential by pushing their minds, bodies and spirits to the absolute limit and beyond. And when I say absolute limits, I mean it. When you push your body in the gym and find yourself sore the next day, that is not really pushing your limits. That is not even a taste of the kind of limits I'm talking about, and that is just the body. That isn't even taking the mind and spirit into account.
I'm talking about pushing the body to the point where it actually physically cannot function due to the level of muscle strain and where ancient pressure point remedies, special medicines, and even drugs must all be provided to give them access to even basic motor function before they can continue training. A single Assassin, unarmed, could easily bring down men twice his size, weight, and who have the same overall skill level in weapons and who hold the same amount of combat experience.
"Doesn't that make them overpowered?" You might be asking.
Technically, you could argue that it does and that god-moding is the only way to beat them. Unfortunately, I don't accept god-moding in my RP's and there are ways to beat them without using such a weak and immature technique.
So here's the challenge...
In order to do well and succeed in this RP, you need to be able to do the following:
* Create a character that is unique, believable, and who's information contains all the information which is outlined in the Character Skeleton on the RP's main page.
* Be able to immerse yourself in a world of violence and chaos where every dark corner could hold a potential enemy (I will be throwing random enemies at all characters in the game, so be ready for it).
* Remain flexible and adaptable in the face of an ever changing world where every turn holds a surprise.
* Understand that, as GM, I hold all authority regarding decisions that are made which would otherwise effect the plot of the RP, the setting of an event or encounter, and details as to exactly what is going to happen during major battles which are a part of the plot I have designed for the RP. Anyone who tries to make changes to such areas without my permission will receive a warning first, but if it continues they will be dropped from the RP.
* Be capable of accepting the fact that, given the kind of character you create, you will have limits as to how powerful you can become and where your skills can reach. I know it seems unfair that an Assassin of Te'i Sai will outmatch pretty much all other character archetypes, but being a part of an RP like this is not about being the most powerful of your archetype, it's about having fun and being a complimentary part of the world that you have chosen to immerse yourself in.
* Follow the rules and treat your fellow RP companions with respect.
