Commencement weekend forecast: Happy graduates, families and friends basking in the California sunshine

With weather forecasters calling for sun, sun and more sun, visitors to Stanford's 121st Commencement should plan to pack sunscreen and hats for the Sunday morning celebration in Stanford Stadium.

Commencement will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the traditional Wacky Walk, in which graduates take to the field for one last campus frolic ? holding signs, carrying props, wearing costumes ? before taking their seats.

Cory Booker, mayor of Newark, N.J., since 2006 and a Stanford graduate, is this year's Commencement speaker.

Live webcast

Recognizing that many family members and friends of graduates cannot make it to the Commencement ceremony, Stanford will offer a live video webcast of the event, beginning at 9:30 a.m. PDT on Sunday.

Twitter users can receive live updates from Commencement via the Stanford Twitter feed (@Stanford). The Twitter hashtag for graduation is #stanford12.

Commencement will be broadcast live on KZSU, the student-run radio station, at 90.1 FM or on the web.

Saturday's Baccalaureate address, featuring Sister Joan Chittister, founder and executive director of Benetvision, a resource and research center for contemporary spirituality, will be broadcast live on KZSU at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 16.

The student speaker at Baccalaureate is Tara Gu, a senior graduating with a major in public policy and a minor in human biology. Gu, who is from Portland, Ore., was selected from among 32 students who submitted "student reflection" speeches to the Office for Religious Life.

The Class Day Lecture will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at Maples Pavilion. This year's speaker is Larry Diamond, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies.

The Stanford Alumni Association is providing a fun, easy way for graduating students to celebrate Commencement by sharing photos. Upload photos of your favorite Stanford memories now and share your best shots from all the Commencement Weekend activities. Students also can submit photos via email to myphotos@alumni.stanford.edu during Commencement events.

Recordings of the main Commencement ceremony will be available on Stanford on iTunes U and the Stanford YouTube Channel following the event. A link to those recordings will be added to the Commencement homepage when they are available.

Campus visitors also are encouraged to download the university's official iPhone application, iStanford. It provides visitors with the most detailed campus map available for mobile devices. The application is searchable and shows users where they are based on their GPS coordinates.

The university expects to grant 1,763 bachelor's degrees, 2,302 master's degrees and 1,023 doctoral degrees.

A full schedule of Commencement Weekend activities is available on the Commencement website.
