Baker Field is a large athletic complex near Inwood Hill Park on the northernmost tip of Manhattan that is operated by the Ivy-League Columbia University. The complex serves as the university?s primary facilities for outdoor sports, including its football stadium, tennis courts, boathouses, soccer stadium and fields for baseball, softball, track and more. Most famously, Baker Field contains the Lawrence A. Wein Stadium, which hosts football games, lacrosse, track and field events. The 17,000 seat stadium opened to the public in 1984, replacing the 1928 arena that had become vastly outdated. The property has been owned by Columbia since 1921, when financier George F. Baker gifted 26 acres to the university and the school?s first stadium was opened for games only two years later. Since then, Columbia has maintained state of the art facilities on the property that include up to date scoring systems and surfacing for each specific sporting venue. Many of the university?s most notable athletes practiced and competed during their educations at Baker Field, including Olympic rower Caryn Davies, Football Hall of Fame quarterback Sid Luckman and Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax. 533 West 218th Street, Manhattan.
