Santorum notched a mere five-delegate advantage over Romney in Louisiana. But the former Massachusetts governor has accumulated twice as many delegates as Santorum ? 568 to 273.
Romney still needs to get to 1,144 to win the nomination. But as the two leading candidates fight their way through the election calendar, it becomes tougher and tougher for Santorum to catch up. He failed to win a spot on the ballot in the District of Columbia, which holds its primary in nine days.

In Wisconsin, the most delegate-rich state holding the next round of primaries on April 3, Romney and his independent super PAC have plowed more than $2 million into TV advertising. A crush of advertising ? mostly negative ? eroded?Santorum's?strength in states such as Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois as he simply couldn't keep pace.
"This race has clearly gotten down to two candidates that can win the nomination,"?Santorum?told reporters in Milwaukee Saturday. "I'd love to have a one-on-one debate.?
Romney's team, increasingly confident, dismissed the idea ? and with good reason.
Santorum had led in some Wisconsin polls, but momentum there is shifting to Romney, favored 46-33 in a Rasmussen Reports survey out Friday. (Gingrich and Paul remain in single digits in Wisconsin, according to Rasmussen.)
"There is a growing perception that Romney is going to be the nominee [84 percent] and there is a growing perception that he is the strongest candidate against Barack Obama [59 percent],? Our most daunting global health crisis is a pernicious, wasting disease that can be spread by a simple cough or sneeze and has been infecting humans since 4,000 B.C.
Tuberculosis (TB) -- a treatable and curable condition -- continues to grow in prevalence, mostly in the developing world, but even in pockets throughout Europe. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared it a global health emergency.
But it's the drug-resistant forms of the disease, MDR-TB (multidrug-resistant) and XDR-TB (extensively drug-resistant) -- which are constantly mutating and require treatments so onerous that nearly one-third of all patients die -- that pose the most serious cause for concern.
Drug-resistant TB is thriving because we have failed to adequately detect and treat ordinary TB. This is, sadly, a problem of our own creation. Our efforts to treat regular TB are insufficient, with many people interrupting or only erratically maintaining adherence to lengthy treatment regimens which themselves are often based on diagnostic tests that predate the Model-T. New drugs that can treat TB and drug-resistant TB more quickly, simply, and cost-effectively are urgently needed.
XDR-TB has now been reported in 69 countries, but it's likely under-reported, as very few endemic countries have the laboratory capacity to detect drug resistance. This is particularly challenging in countries that lack optimal healthcare systems in Africa, Asia and South America. And once a drug-resistant strain emerges, it can be transmitted directly to others just like ordinary TB. We now understand that direct transmission is the most common way drug-resistant TB is spread, which augments this emerging global health threat.
The combination of TB and HIV/AIDS exacerbates the situation. HIV/AIDS makes you more susceptible to TB, which itself makes HIV/AIDS worse. TB is the No. 1 infectious killer of people living with HIV/AIDS -- meaning that our failure to stop the spread of drug-resistant TB threatens the significant progress that has been made in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
There is no single technology that exists today to address all TB diagnostic needs; complementary diagnostics, both molecular and liquid culture, are required to diagnose patients with active TB and determine which drugs their TB is sensitive to. With a new diagnostic tool, more appropriate treatment could be given more quickly. But there is cause for hope. Significant advances are being made in designing rapid and accurate diagnostic technologies. And innovative partnerships between companies, governments and health advocacy organizations are helping to ensure that these advances reach endemic regions.
These comprehensive approaches -- coupled with partnerships to improve health system capacity by providing training for frontline healthcare workers, improving laboratory services and processes, and providing the latest diagnostic tools to laboratories in countries most threatened by TB at deeply discounted prices - are helping to make a difference.
Building on an existing partnership, the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) and BD recently announced a new collaboration to promote access to early and accurate diagnosis of MDR-TB among HIV-infected patients and other vulnerable populations in India, a country that accounts for nearly 25 percent of TB cases globally.
The pilot program will be launched in Karnataka state, the region with the highest TB/HIV co-infection rate in the country. The program will focus on increasing access to state-of-the-art diagnostics by extending an existing pricing agreement that significantly reduces the price of the BD BACTEC? MGIT? system. The initiative, in partnership with Kasturba Medical College, also seeks to establish a new collaboration model in which a private hospital provides critical medical services to public patients. Having access to private healthcare systems will help ensure that the patients facing the greatest risk of TB -- and the greatest risk of co-infection and drug resistance -- are being cared for by the best their community has to offer.
According to the WHO, each year approximately 2 million people in India develop TB -- that's one in every five TB cases on the planet. If we can pave the way to reversing and defeating TB in India, we'll make a monumental dent in TB globally.
And more help is on the way. The global TB drug and vaccine pipelines are more robust than ever before. A partnership including the TB Alliance, Bayer HealthCare, University College London, University of St. Andrews and the U.K. Medical Research Council recently announced the completion of patient enrollment in REMox TB, a global Phase III clinical trial, which may result in the registration of the first new drug approved to treat drug-sensitive TB in nearly 50 years. Additionally, new, novel drug regimens with the potential to dramatically shorten treatment for MDR-TB by 80 percent or more are currently being tested.
We need to keep collaborating to end TB. It can be diagnosed. It can be treated. We can defeat it. But it starts with political will to fund TB efforts, public and private sector scientific collaborations to produce the next generation of TB vaccines, diagnostics and treatments, and high-impact health partnerships to ensure access for all and amplify their impact to end the latest global health crisis.

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ? Nnemkadi Ogwumike wants one final shot at an NCAA championship.
She would like nothing more than to carry her Cardinal to another Final Four, and she had 39 points and 10 rebounds in top-seeded Stanford's 76-60 victory over No. 5 seed South Carolina on Saturday night to get one win closer.
Now, Duke is all that stands in the way of a trip to Denver and the program's fifth straight Final Four.
Ogwumike shot 14 for 22 and made 11 of 12 free throws, and Toni Kokenis added 12 points and seven boards as the Cardinal (34-1) ran their school-record winning streak to 31 games with a hard-fought victory.
"I don't want any game to be my last, except for next weekend," she said. I play for my teammates. I play for my coaches. It's been one crazy journey. To be out there and know how bad teams want to beat us, that's motivation enough."
Markeshia Grant scored 14 points and made four 3-pointers and La'Keisha Sutton had 18 for scrappy South Carolina (25-10), which hung tough in its first regional semifinals since 2002 despite a significant height disadvantage.
Stanford will play Monday night against Duke, which beat St. John's 74-47 in Saturday's first game at the Save Mart Center. The Cardinal have a large contingent of fans who made the three-hour drive from the Bay Area.
"Nneka just would not be denied," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said.
The Hall of Fame coach topped her former U.S. Olympic star, Dawn Staley. The two captured a gold medal together in the 1996 Atlanta Games, with VanDerveer taking a year off from Stanford to coach the Americans.
But it wasn't as easy as Stanford usually has it ? South Carolina's guards regularly answered on the offensive end after baskets by Stanford. The Cardinal received their biggest push since a 74-71 overtime victory over rival California at home in Maples Pavilion on Jan. 28.
"I thought we played as well as we could play considering who we were playing and the type of night Nneka Ogwumike said," Staley said. "My hat goes off to our players who fought so hard and gave all they had."
Nneka Ogwumike took over down the stretch, even playing with three fouls for the final 17:20.
She scored on a leaping layin off a reverse pivot with 9:23 left to put her team up 56-48. She hit one free throw with 8:54 to play, then drew a charge on Ashley Bruner moments later before scoring over Bruner for an 11-point lead of 59-48. Staley quickly called timeout.
South Carolina tried to mix it up defensively against Ogwumike to get her out of sync.
"Looking at the stat sheet it doesn't look like anything worked," Staley said. "She had a tremendous night. We made her work for every 39 of her points. When someone has it going on like that there's not much you can do but give her different looks."
Kokenis had a steal in the backcourt and drove the full length of the floor for a three-point play with 5:10 remaining to make it 68-54 and cap a 9-0 Stanford run.
Joslyn Tinkle banked in a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded to end the first half with Stanford leading 36-30 despite getting points from only four players. Nneka Ogwumike shot 7 for 12, while the rest of the team went 7 of 20.
The Cardinal got a couple of scares with Chiney Ogwumike going down twice. She hit the ground awkwardly on her braced right knee on a first-half rebound attempt. She was undercut by South Carolina's Courtney Newton, but the sophomore stayed in the game after being helped up by her big sister.
With 15:11 remaining, she drove the lane was bumped by Ebony Wilson. She lay on the ground in pain, grabbing to stretch her troublesome right knee while holding her sister's hand. Chiney Ogwumike sat down and iced the knee before returning less than a minute later.
"They were relentless inside. They outrebounded us, which isn't very common. It's something we'll have to watch tape about," Nneka Ogwumike said. "I knew in my heart we were going to win. I could see it in our eyes."
The talented Ogwumike sister tandem combined to score their team's first 10 points and the Cardinal led by as many as 10 in the first half.
South Carolina advanced to the NCAA's round of 16 for the third time in program history and first under fourth-year coach Staley. And this group looked drastically different from the Gamecocks team that took a 70-32 whipping on Stanford's home floor in Maples Pavilion on Nov. 26, 2010. That day, Staley asked VanDerveer to spend a few minutes with the South Carolina players in the locker room after the Hall of Famer earned career victory No. 797.
The Gamecocks beat six ranked opponents this season but couldn't pull off the upset this time.
"I think we were a resilient group just coming in four years ago from our 10-18 season to the Sweet Sixteen," Sutton said. "I definitely feel this is something special at the University of South Carolina. I definitely think we'll be back every year from now on."
VanDerveer eliminated Staley from the NCAA tournament again. The Cardinal beat Staley during her college career at Virginia in the NCAA semifinals in both 1990 and '92, and Stanford went on to win it all both times. But VanDerveer's teams haven't captured a title since '92.
Likely WNBA No. 1 pick Nneka Ogwumike hopes to do her part to change that.
"Whoever has the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, they're going to get a nice solid player who's going to help them right away," Staley said.
