Gangster-bought Duesenberg Model J/SJ heads to auction ...

1931 Duesenberg SJ

What drives one into a life of crime other than the prospect of easy money? And what does one spend that easy money on other than flashy cars? Doubtless, most original owners of Duesenbergs were law-abiding citizens, but it would be tantamount to historical revisionism to suggest that not one Duesenberg purchaser funded it from ill-gotten gains, and one such Duesenberg, a Murphy-bodied 1931 Duesenberg Model J/SJ disappearing top convertible coupe, will cross the block next month in Monterey.

Described as totally and completely numbers-matching, the Duesenberg carries the same engine (J-345), crankshaft (345), chassis (2367) and body (925) that was delivered to its original owner, William Collins (reported by RM Auctions to be a figure in New York?s criminal underground). Collins reportedly owned the car for a single day before his death, and it was then acquired by Philadelphia bootlegger Mickey Duffy. When Duffy was shot down in Atlantic City, the car was passed on to Duffy?s business associate Owney Madden, owner of Harlem?s infamous Cotton Club. After passing through the hands of less notable owners, the car appeared in a December 1953 Motor Trend classified ad, offered for the now-unbelievable selling price of $150.

Restored to its original condition by owner Eldon Eby in the late 1970s, the Duesenberg later received a conversion to SJ (supercharged) specifications, when it was fitted with its extremely rare Monel side exhaust. In 1982, the car won both Best Duesenberg and Best in Show at the ACD Club National Reunion, and it was exhibited at the Pebble Beach Concours d?Elegance in 1983 and 1984. Though Eldon Eby sold the car in the early 1980s, fate reunited the two when a new owner placed an ad for an experienced Duesenberg mechanic; Eby, now retired and living near the car?s current owner, answered the ad to discover the job was caring for the Duesenberg he?d known best. Chassis 2367 will be offered for sale by RM Auctions as part of the company?s Monterey sale with an anticipated selling price is $2 million to $2.5 million.

Collins?s SJ, as expected, will not be the only Duesenberg to cross the block at Monterey this year, nor the only one with an interesting history. One of the other two, a 1929 Duesenberg Model J, also features a Murphy body and was originally purchased as a chassis only (number 2134, claimed to be the very first chassis-only order submitted to Duesenberg) by the wife of department store magnate Harry Robinson. The frame, complete with engine J-108, was sent to the Walter M. Murphy Company, where the disappearing top convertible coupe body was styled with input from the Robinsons. Unusual for the time, both the body and the chassis were sprayed in white per the client?s request.

In 1934, the car was used by Ginger Rogers in The Gay Divorcee, then ultimately passed through a string of owners in the ensuing decades. Since the mid-2000s, the car has received both mechanical attention (including engine, transmission and differential work) and, most recently, a concours-quality restoration carried out by Fran Roxas, completed in 2010. Restored to its original specification and color, the car won Best of Show at the 2012 Celebration of Automobiles at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and earned a feature spot in Fred Roe?s book, Duesenberg: The Pursuit of Perfection.

At RM Auctions? 2012 Monterey sale, chassis 2134 sold for $1,897,500, but it?s back on the market again just one year later. This time, auction house Gooding & Company expects the car to sell for between $2.25 million and $2.75 million when the car crosses the stage.

Last of this year?s Monterey Duesenbergs, but not least, the 1930 Duesenberg Model J Torpedo Phaeton, chassis 2276, began its life wearing limousine coachwork from the Judkins Company. First purchased by William Sandow, the car was later used by the wife of E.L. Cord, before being sold to John de Noira in 1937. Pacific Auto Rental, de Noira?s company specializing in car rentals for the movie industry, owned the Duesenberg until 1985, and the car appeared in such films as Al Capone (1955), Howard Hughes (1977), City Heat (1984) and at least 11 others.

Upon purchasing the car in 1985, Fred and Dave Weber asked coachbuilder Fran Roxas to rebody the car in a style similar to a Walker LaGrande Torpedo Phaeton, while retaining the car?s original chassis and drivetrain. Since the completion of this restoration, the car has racked up numerous awards (including ?Most Outstanding Open Car, 1921-1930? at the 2008 Greenwich Concours d?Elegance) in the hands of several owners. Sold in January of 2013 for $698,500 at Bonhams?s Boca Raton auction, the car will be offered for the second time in 2013 by Mecum Auctions in Monterey. No pre-auction estimate for it has been released.

Gooding & Company?s 2013 Pebble Beach auction will take place from August 17-18 at the Pebble Beach Equestrian Center; for more information, visit GoodingCo.com. Mecum?s Monterey auction will take place August 15-17 at the Hyatt Regency Monterey; for more information, visit Mecum.com. RM Auctions? Monterey sale will take place on August 16-17 at the Portola Hotel & Spa and Monterey Conference Center; for more information, visit RMAuctions.com.

Judge in U.S. WikiLeaks case declines to dismiss charge of aiding enemy

FORT MEADE, Maryland (Reuters) - The military judge hearing the court-martial of the U.S. soldier accused of the biggest leak of classified material in the nation's history is expected to rule on Thursday on whether the breach amounted to aiding the enemy.

That is the most serious charge of the 21 counts that U.S. Army Private First Class, Bradley Manning faces and it carries the possibility of life in prison.

Manning, 25, is charged with sharing more than 700,000 classified files, combat videos and State Department cables with the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks while serving as a low-level intelligence analyst in Iraq in 2009 and 2010.

Defense lawyer David Coombs on Monday argued before Judge Colonel Denise Lind that Manning was guilty of negligence but not the "general evil intent" standard required to justify the heavy charge.

Over the course of the trial, defense lawyers have sought to show that the slightly built Manning was naive but well-intentioned in seeking to inform Americans about the reality of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The trial will also hear from prosecution witnesses in a rebuttal phase following the close of the defense phase last week.

VP Biden: Virginia GOP Slate Extreme Captives of Tea Party Ideology

Vice President Joe Biden continued a busy political pace Saturday, appearing with Virginia's Democratic gubernatorial candidate at the swing state's premier party fundraiser and ridiculing this fall's conservative Republican statewide ticket as extreme captives of tea party ideology.

Biden brought about 1,000 Democrats to their feet repeatedly at the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner barely four months ahead of the nation's only competitive governor's race. His appearances at state fundraisers haved evoked speculation that he is laying his footing for a 2016 presidential bid.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we stand for equal rights and women's rights," Biden said. "With virtually zero support from the Republicans, the president and I have moved the country from the worst recession since the Great Depression to 38 months of private-sector growth."

With Democratic gubernatorial nominee Terry McAuliffe at his side, Biden took aim at McAuliffe's opponent, state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who won the GOP nomination with strong tea party support and his socially conservative ticket mates.

"There is so much they stand for that is so at odds with the value set of Virginians," Biden said.

The vice president warned that a GOP victory in Virginia would only galvanize the tea party's grip on the GOP in Congress, where he said even longtime moderate Republicans are fearful of a primary challenge if they don't do the tea party's bidding.

"They are so afraid of a challenge by the tea party that they vote against what is the right vote. Imagine what they will do to Barack and me if Terry McAuliffe loses," he said.

A McAuliffe victory, he said, would "send a strong signal to Republicans across America that there's no reason to be afraid of these extreme guys."

Before speaking to activists who paid $175 or more per ticket, Biden joined McAuliffe, a longtime confidante of Bill and Hillary Clinton, in surprising patrons at a Richmond restaurant, shaking hands before wolfing down two plates of fried whiting.

Among other campaign events this season, Biden aided Democratic Rep. Ed Markey in a Massachusetts special election ? Markey won, thus keeping Secretary of State John Kerry's old seat in Democratic hands ? and held a series of closed-door "donor-maintenance" events in Washington.

Sen. Tim Kaine, elected on the same Virginia ballot as President Barack Obama last fall, said it's too early for Democrats to take sides in a potential nomination contest between Biden and Hillary Clinton, but he counseled both to try pragmatism over progressive partisanship.

"I think the Virginia Democratic success model is, we'll let the other guys be the ideology people and we will be the work-together, compromise, make-things-happen party. That's been the model that has allowed Dems to win," said Kaine, like McAuliffe, a former Democratic National Committee chairman.

In speeches warming up the crowd, Kaine and Sen. Mark Warner congratulated gay-rights activists for the ruling that cleared the way for same-sex marriages in 13 states but not in Virginia, where a 7-year-old amendment to the state Constitution prohibits it. And both hailed the immigration reform bill that they supported ? it now faces an uncertain future in a conservative Republican-led House.

The Cuccinelli campaign joined the Virginia GOP in using Biden's visit as an occasion to attack the ticket for Obama's clean-energy initiative, warning that it will devastate Virginia's struggling coal industry and drive up utility bills.

"With no economic plan or message to tout, Vice President Biden and Terry McAuliffe doubled down on an empty strategy of division and false attacks tonight," the campaign said in a statement that referred to the "Obama/Biden/McAuliffe War On Coal" and government-run healthcare as "harmful to job growth and economic opportunity in Virginia."

State GOP Chairman Pat Mullins called it "the most anti-coal slate of candidates ever fielded in the history of Virginia," a distinction intended to lock up the rural, rugged but independent southwestern tip of the state for the GOP in a neck-and-neck governor's race.

Republicans weren't alone in protesting Biden's trip. About three dozen environmental activists opposed to construction of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline stood on a street corner as Biden's motorcade passed, waving placards that read "Say No to Big Oil" and chanting "Hey, Joe, you ought to know, Keystone pipeline's got to go."

Nico Rosberg captures British Grand Prix

SILVERSTONE, England ? Nico Rosberg won the British Grand Prix on Sunday after four drivers, including early leader Lewis Hamilton, had to deal with exploding tires and three-time champion Sebastian Vettel quit with 10 laps remaining because of mechanical problems.

With Vettel?s Red Bull teammate Mark Webber closing fast, Rosberg managed to win his second race of the year and third of his career by 0.7 seconds in a nail-biting finish ? then had to survive a stewards inquiry.

Ferrari?s Fernando Alonso, who started ninth, made a late charge up the grid and got past Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen with two laps remaining to claim third. Hamilton also recovered to finish fourth, after his blown tire sent him to the back of the grid in the eighth lap.

Soon after celebrating, Rosberg risked seeing his victory slip away when he was referred to the stewards for not slowing down for yellow flags in turns 3 and 5. The stewards ruled that Rosberg ?did not make a significant reduction in speed? but would only receive a reprimand, or warning. After three reprimands during a season, drivers are given a 10-place grid penalty. This was Rosberg?s first.

?Fantastic, it?s very special,? said Rosberg, who also won in Monaco and in China last year.?

Hamilton seemed poised to win his first British Grand Prix since 2008 after getting a great start and extending his lead over three-time world champion Vettel.

But on the eighth lap, the 2008 champion?s left rear tire exploded and he was forced to limp into the pits. Two laps later, Ferrari?s Felipe Massa lost his left rear tire and spun out. Then, Toro Rosso?s Jean-Eric Vergne also lost his rear tire on the 15th, sending rubber flying across the track.

That brought out the safety car until lap 22 and sparked renewed concerns about the reliability of Pirelli tires. It also prompted drivers to later warn of the dangers of exploding tires.

Gaither's Suttles off football team at Nebraska

The Associated Press

Published: June 28, 2013

LINCOLN, Neb. - Nebraska coach Bo Pelini announced that former Gaither High defensive end Ernest Suttles and linebacker Thomas Brown are no longer on the team.

The university's athletic department said in a statement Thursday night that it was "aware of an incident involving student-athletes which occurred off campus over the weekend."

Lincoln Police Capt. Danny Reitan told the Journal Star that Suttles was cited for assaulting another football player on June 21 at an off-campus party. The Associated Press reported that Suttles allegedly struck linebacker David Santos in the head with a bottle.

Suttles, a Tribune first-team all-Hillsborough County selection in 2012, signed with the Huskers in February and was set to join the program this fall. Pelini said in February that Suttles had a chance to be an immediate contributor.

El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser takes office eager to learn about his team

Click photo to enlarge

El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser

After winning with 76 percent of the vote in the June 11 runoff election, Mayor Oscar Leeser is finally in office.

Moving from car dealership owner to mayor calls for some learning on the job, he said. Leeser said his first goal is to become more familiar with the city departments and what they do for residents. After that, the budget will be a primary focus.

With less than one week on the job and a little under four more years to go, Leeser talked about being El Paso's new mayor.

Q: What has the transition been like?

A: You know it's been great. We had our first City Council meeting on Tuesday. It went real well; we set a good tempo.

I really like the City Council we have. I think the voters have put a good council together, and in just one meeting alone you can see how well we are working together, and I was real impressed with that.

Q: After your first meeting, what did you think? Was it easier to be up there? Harder?

A: You know what, harder, it was basically what I thought. I've been on boards with different organizations, so I knew what to expect.

Q: Now that you are in office, what is the first issue you want to tackle?

A: The first thing we needed to do and we've been doing that, when you showed up I was in a meeting, is we want to meet with department heads; we want to meet the people that work for our city.

We have great, great people, and that's been the best part

so far. The people who are here are excited, and that's the best thing so far.

Q: How long will that take? Are you seeking feedback from them or setting a new direction?

A: I want to introduce myself to them and I want to learn what they do. I don't have a time limit because I want to take my time and meet everybody and understand their role in bettering our city.

Q: Are there any issues that have come up in City Hall in the past six months that you want to bring back or place on an agenda?

A: You know, not at this point. We've only been in office a little bit. You're here on day three, and you are my first interview. We're just kind of going in and doing what we said we are going to do and take our time and meet the people and understand their needs and wants.

Q: A big part of your campaign was financial responsibility. Have you started to look at budgets and thinking about adjustments?

A: We're starting on that. Mid-July is when we go into budget negotiations, so we are getting ready to start that. That is going to be one of our priorities, to look at the budget and make sure that we do the right thing going forward and try to balance it.

Q: Is there anything off the top of your head that you want to focus on going into the budget meetings?

A: Until I see it, I really don't have one item I want to look at.

Q: One of the things Mayor John Cook left behind was the beginning of the mass transit system. Do you have any plans to continue in that direction, adjust or add to it?

A: Again, until I really look at it I can't tell you what I need to adjust. Looking at it is a great thing because we are going to look at every department. We are going to look at everything and make sure that it is working efficiently. And that's the key, making sure everything is working the right way. Every time we do something, we want to make sure we are maximized.

Q: Is there anything externally that you have on your agenda in the next few weeks?

A: No, not really.

Q: Is there any new direction that you would like the City Council or city staff to take or at least start researching?

A: No. You know right now the key is to work together and that we work toward the same common goal. It is really important to me to make sure we respect each other, respect our employees and respect the community. And for the community to respect us. So it's really important that we work in a professional manner.

Q: Asking City Manager Joyce Wilson to stay was a move you made before you even took office. For some, it was a move met with praise, and for some it was met with criticism. What was your response?

A: It's really important that we continue with continuity, and we have a lot of open projects. We have the baseball park, we have the quality-of-life bonds and we have a lot of things that we want to make sure are executed and executed properly. And it was really important to have continuity. So it's a plus. Plus, we don't want to rush into looking for a new city manager. That gives us a year or so to start the process and make sure the process is done properly and we pick a person that will fit in perfect for our community.

Q: And is there anything else you would like to add or let the community know about yourself as the new mayor?

A: My commitment is to work hard and to bring trust and honesty.

We will do that. We will work hard and make sure that we work as a unit, work as one and make sure we have a common goal for the community of El Paso.
