Vandy Coach Offers Scholarships To Unborn?

Vanderbilt head football coach James Franklin is not afraid of recruiting anyone born or unborn. Franklin told The Tennessean...
quote:

?If I see a 6-foot-6 man walking in the mall with his wife, and she?s 6-2 and she?s pregnant, I?ll go up and offer their unborn child,? ?I?m not exaggerating. I do that all the time. ? It?s about developing a relationship with people. It?s about getting them connected with Vanderbilt. It?s about making people laugh and telling a story and having fun. It?s about having a sense of humor and not being some robot coach that I don?t want to be.?

10-year-old vandals ravage dead woman's home - FOX23 News

Kids as young as 10 years old broke into an elderly woman's home, trashed it, spray-painted antiques, broke windows and set up camp.

The woman died a few months ago and the family was working to sort through her belongings in the home.

Tulsa police caught two 10-year-olds and a 13-year-old who lived down the street from the home in the 5300 block of South 36th West Avenue on Wednesday night.

FOX23 News spoke to the woman who lived next door to the home, who says she caught the kids in the act.

"I pulled up in my van and I could see the front door," said Tammie Owen.

She knew the kids didn't belong in the home.

"The kid come out and ran back out when he noticed me sitting in my van," said Owen.

She went to the fence and started questioning one of the kids, who told her a story she didn't believe.

"He said, ?Grandma gave me a key and said I could come over here,'" said Owen. "I'm like, ?Let?s call the cops and let the cops decide what to do.'"

She says the kids told her they didn't like that idea.

"'Oh there is no need for cops to be called,'" said Owen of the kids? reaction.

That's when the kids took off on their bicycles. When police arrived, the front doors were shattered and a boat in the yard was spray-painted.

"The house was just trashed,? said Owen.

FOX23 News spoke to a family member on the phone who said inside the home vulgar language was spray-painted on the washer, dryer, inside the freezer and antiques.

He said the kids dumped each drawer, made coffee and Kool-Aid and set up the television with the air conditioning blasting in the house.

He also said pills were smashed up.

"I wanted to beat them," said Owen.

She recognized the 10-year-olds, who lived at the end of the street.

Fox23 News knocked on their door to speak to the parents but no one answered.

"I wanted to teach them respect. You don't do people's houses like that way?anybody?s, I don't care whose it is," said Owen.

Police say the kids were not sent to juvenile detention but will have to go to juvenile court and face a judge, who will determine their punishment.

Epson TW550 Gaming Projector Review - The Worlds Best Video ...

On the 14th of February this year I received quite the surprise? I was robbed. They stole my pretty 42? Plasma and since my insurance is, shall we say, non existant I am now forced to replace it and have been trying to save up the cash and make a decision on what to get.

Personally I have always been intrigued about having a projector instead of a TV but the wife was adamant that we weren?t having some faded picture instead of a real TV. Then as luck would have it I was offered the opportunity to review the Epson TW550 Gaming and Movie projector.

And with that I was soon sitting in my lounge with this beauty next to me.

And for the rest of us who only really care about the experience then let?s carry on.

My biggest worry with a projector was that I?d need a dark room to really make it work well and as my lounge has no door but rather an archway into the rest of the house and my curtains aren?t black, so I was a little worried.

I shouldn?t have been. The brightness of the projector is well beyond what I expected. You can quite easily watch TV with the curtains open or with the lights on at night. Granted it?s not as crystal clear with a well lit room but it still works well and that was a pleasant surprise.

Movies

But this projector really starts to shine when the sun goes down and you switch off the lights. I rented some HD TV series from iTunes and sat down for a night of glory. It?s hard to put into words the experience of having your own personal high definition cinema in your house. The 3 metre wide picture was crystal clear and gorgeous.

Grabbing a box of popcorn and snuggling up with the family made it feel like we had rented out a cinema and were living the life of the rich and famous. Unfortunately we noticed a problem pretty quickly though. the iPad has no optical out and neither does the projector which meant the sound was being played through the small speakers in the projector. They manage to do the job pretty well but it is definitely a weak point for this projector.

productimage

Sports

Next up I plugged the projector into my HD PVR and started watching some football games and Formula 1. Now the PVR does have an optical out and with that connected to my surround sound, cold beer in hand and the HD sport beaming onto the wall I felt I was in the stadium and experiencing the depression of yet another Liverpool loss with my extended family in the stadium.

I even got up of the couch and stood next to Gerrard on the pitch? but then I got in the way of the beam and everyone shouted at me.. but hey I?ve done something most Liverpool fans would give their left leg for.

I didn?t notice any ghosting or blurring on the screen even with the fast pace of Formula 1 or the ball being blasted into the back of the net. This is easily the best way to watch sports.

Games

And yes do you really think I?d have a 3 metre screen and not play games?

First up I had to preview Gunslinger which is an on rails(ish) shooter set in the wild west. The huge HD screen looked awesome but it did take some time to get used to how far apart the bad guy on the left and right were, I literally had to move my head to keep focus of the people I was shooting at.

It?s not all good with the big screen though as small graphical issues become quite apparent when they are bigger than your head. But this was preview code so I moved onto old faithful, Black Ops 2, to see how that worked.

Best gaming experience ever? it?s as simple as that. You become immersed into the game so quickly and with a proper surround sound setup and a screen bigger than your standard vision it?s impossible not to thoroughly enjoy every part of the experience.

Granted you aren?t as good as you normally are if you sit closer and need to move your head to react but you can shrink the projection a bit, sit back and still dominate the opposition, unless the opposition is jimmytediblewyrm that is? he kills me every time and my kids think it?s hilarious.

Next up on the testing table was GRiD 2 which proved to be another great experience with the vistas and horizons of California and Paris looking incredible in blurring fast moving detail. But nothing was as spectacular as smashing into a wall at 250mph and zooming into full life sized slowmo to watch my death? ah destruction.

Moving on

3D

One of the big selling points of this projector is that it is fully capable of 3D movies and gaming. I don?t like 3D movies and gaming at all so I am not in a position to say whether it does it well or not. It doesn?t try force it on me though so for that I?m grateful

So why don?t we all have projectors?

Up to now it?s all sounded perfect but if they are that good then why doesn?t everyone have a projector?

Well two issues will stand in the way of a lot of people. The first being that if you don?t have a HD PVR you are projecting a standard definition picture onto a 3 metre screen and that looks awful. This isn?t a problem with the projector mind you but rather a problem with the picture you are beaming.

Not to mention a bad Netflix picture is all but unwatchable at that size.

The other problem is that you need a room big enough to justify a projector. My lounge is rather large and as such it makes for the perfect projector room. But if you can?t mount your projector at least 4 metres away from the wall the resulting size wouldn?t be much more than a large TV which by pure physics will always have a better end screen.

So if you have the room size and are mainly using it for HD then I can openly and honestly recommend this product. I cried big man tears when they took it away from me and I now have to save a little more to get myself one as I cannot imagine going back to a standard 42? TV after this.

The Epson TW550 has a RRP of R11 055 but if that is slightly high you may want to look at its little brother the Epson TW480 which apparently is the same just without the 3D capability for just over R8 000.

Thanks to Epson for providing the review unit and just remember that I?ll hate you forever for taking it away again.

Honda orders recall because of fire risk -- for 2nd time

Autos

Image: Honda Fit

The Detroit Bureau

The 2007-2008 Honda Fit's master power window switch can short and even catch fire if it gets wet.

Honda has become the latest automaker to order a recall due to the risk of potential vehicle fires ? a problem linked to a defective power window switch that has led to major recalls at several competitors including Toyota and General Motors. Embarrassingly, it is the second time Honda has had to repair the affected vehicles for the same problem.

In fact, with the recall covering just 143,083 Honda Fit subcompacts sold in the U.S., the latest safety action is relatively modest when compared to the 2.5 million vehicles Toyota had to recall in the States for the problem last October.

The latest action involves 2007 and 2008 model-year Honda subcompacts and is linked to a defective power window module that is vulnerable to rain or spilled liquids that might over time get in through the driver?s window.

?Over time,? the maker explains in a release, ?exposure to water and other fluids can cause electrical resistance in the switch, which ultimately can cause the switch to overheat and melt, damaging the switch and potentially damaging an associated wire harness. Additionally, if a switch melts, it could produce smoke and, potentially cause a fire.?

More from The Detroit Bureau:'Lola' tops 200 mph, sets EV world speed record

That is precisely the problem Honda described in January 2010 when it conducted a recall of the same Fit models for the same problem, using a fix it now says, ?has since been determined by Honda not to be sufficiently robust to ensure that all switches would be completely sealed against all possible moisture intrusion.?

If that is not problematic enough, Honda apparently may have to subject some owners to an additional, two-step repair process. It is asking owners of the affected vehicles to bring the little hatchbacks in for inspection as soon as possible. If it appears the defective switches show obvious damage they will be replaced immediately. If not, the maker says it will send the vehicles home, and will contact them later in the year to come back for a replacement ?when sufficient supplies of the updated switch are available.?

It is becoming increasingly common for manufacturers to announce large recalls because underlying components are frequently shared among a wide range of vehicles. And many suppliers sell the same, or nearly identical, components to more than one manufacturer.

More from The Detroit Bureau: Terrorists may be targeting our high-tech cars

As a result, Toyota was forced to recall 7.4 million cars, trucks and crossovers last autumn to deal with the same power window switch issue, including 2.5 million sold in the States. It was the Japanese giant?s largest recall ever.

General Motors has also had to order major recalls covering a wide range of products due to the switch problem, including one recall announced earlier this month involving 250,000 Chevrolet Trailblazers and GMC Envoy SUVs.A defective airbag system produced by a single supplier, Takata, similarly led to a major recall by a wide range of Asian and Western makers earlier this year.

But the Honda recall is a problem for the maker at a variety of levels. It not only is ordering a re-do of previous work but could subject some owners to multiple additional visits to the repair shop.

Compounding the situation, Honda has suffered a growing number of safety-related recalls in recent years, coming in as first or second in terms of the number of individual vehicles involved for each of the last four years.

More from The Detroit Bureau:Would you buy a Chinese-made Ford

And this year it seems on track to lead the list again, having recalled several million vehicles sold in the U.S. for problems including brake and airbag defects, as well as transmissions that can shift out of Park resulting in runaway vehicles.

Nonetheless, the maker still landed in the Top 10 according to the latest J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey, a measure of problems experienced by owners during the first 90 days after purchase. But the maker lagged behind Toyota and, among mainstream brands, both Chevrolet and GMC ? their parent General Motors topping the IQS list among individual manufacturers for the first time.

Backyard BBQ Party Ideas & Recipes | Devour The Blog: Cooking ...

Jun 27

We here at Cooking Channel love a good party. But throwing a memorable event requires more than just gathering some food and drinks. We show you how, with just five main ?ingredients? (including recipes, big-impact decorating ideas and easy DIY elements), you can throw a party that feels like it has a cohesive theme ? minimal work required.

Typical backyard barbecues are often simple, undecorated affairs. But when you?re going to the effort of planning a menu, a bar and maybe an array of games for your party guests, why not take the time to add some decorative touches that?ll make it feel like a themed event? No imagery is quite as evocative of summertime as nautical elements like ropes, seashells, sand, and blue and white colors. So whether you?re seaside, lounging by a lake or pool, at the park or in your own backyard, you can transform your party space into a beach-inspired retreat. The wistful touches and low-key hands-on menu will transport guests to an instant vacation.

To host this nautical backyard barbecue, you?ll need five essential ingredients:
? a build-your-own burger bar
? classic blue-and-white pinwheels
? seashells (authentic or from a party store)
? paper cones for popcorn (download the template here)
? watermelon wedges

Click here to see the full party and get tips for hosting your own nautical backyard barbecue.

Spotlight On: The Menu

Keep things simple with food that guests can enjoy while lounging on a towel or with their feet dangling in the water. Homemade popcorn with rosemary-infused oil is a refreshing twist on the typical chips-and-dip appetizer, and guests can fill paper cones with the snack (and carry them around). The food buffet ? the beach-themed centerpiece of the party ? features a build-your-own-burger bar, which allows guests to customize their main dish as they please. (Offer vegetarian and beef patties to keep all eaters happy.) And for a simple dessert with a twist, serve classic watermelon wedges sprinkled with sea salt for extra zing. Stash retro soda bottles in a galvanized tin for easy drink service that enhances the laid-back boardwalk vibe.

You Can Turn Your HTC One Into a Google Edition With This ROM

Well that didn?t take long. The Google Edition of the HTC One has really only just gone on sale in the US, but already some enterprising hackers have dumped its ROM and made a version any GSM HTC One owner can install on their non-Google Edition devices. You didn?t exactlylove Sense, right?

Of course to actually flash this thing to your phone you?ll need to root it, but that?s pretty easy these days. Here?s an all-in-one tool to get you started. The beauty of plopping something like this on your device ? a modified version of the Google Edition ROM direct from HTC ? is that all the drivers work as you?d expect, so it should be liquid smooth with everything functional.

For those wanting CyanogenMod, we should see HTC?s drivers make their way to other custom ROMs soon, and that goes for the Samsung Galaxy S4 too, while we?re on the subject of Google Editions. There?s never been a better time to be an Android owner, that?s for sure. [XDA via Droid Life]

Interview with Pierre Zarokian on Reputation Management for Small ...

pierre

In the mid-90s, while developing a search engine for a yellow pages company, Pierre Zarokian became interested in how search engines determined their rankings, eventually starting a search engine submission and optimization company. He founded Submit Express in 1998, right around when Google was launched. Submit Express began in his parents? garage, with virtually no investment, but it became successful within a year. Today, Submit Express employs over 30 people. Pierre is still its president, and is involved with day-to-day operations and management see www.submitexpress.com.?

Why is online reputation especially significant for small businesses?

Your business represents a huge investment in time, money, education, expertise, equipment, staff training, and marketing. It is everything?it is your life. So how do you protect your business if a crazy customer goes on a verbal rampage and posts numerous negative reviews all over the Internet? What will that result in?

Your reputation matters and here is why:

  • 83% of consumers say online customer reviews influence their purchase decisions. (Source: Opinion Research Corp., June 2008)
  • A word-of-mouth recommendation is the primary factor behind 20% to 50% of all purchasing decisions. (Source: McKinsey Quarterly, April 2010)
  • Harvard University research on Yelp shows that a 1-star difference in reviews on Yelp may result in 5% to 9% in business gained or lost. (Source: Harvard University, September 2011)

These days, anyone can go online and anonymously leave negative feedback or reviews about individuals or businesses. Sites such as Yelp, RipoffReport.com, Scam.com, Scambook.com, PissedConsumer.com, and ComplaintsBoard.com allow postings by anyone. Posters? identities are often validated through nothing more than an Email address. Some of these sites may track the IP address of the poster; however, it would be virtually impossible to acquire the IP address without legal action and subpoenaing the records of the complaints site. Furthermore, simply acquiring an IP address is no guarantee that you?ll easily identify the poster. You?d need to subpoena the records of the ISP as well, and, in some cases, it might not have records available.

Consumers oftentimes leave negative feedback and rants on their social media pages such as Twitter and Facebook, and many of those sites normally rank very high in Google and other search engines due to their popularity. That?s why negative reviews posted on these types of sites tend to show up in search engines. If it?s your business that?s being disparaged, the situation can turn ugly.

With that backdrop, the early 2000s saw the birth of a new industry?Online Reputation Management (ORM), also called Search Engine Reputation Management (SERM). Online Reputation Management helps businesses eliminate or reduce the damage caused by negative Internet postings that are ranking high on searches for their companies, brand names, or associated individuals (such as a company president). Removing offending pages is sometimes not possible, even through legal action. However, the targeted use of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Social Media Marketing enables businesses to push down negative pages in search engine rankings?even to the second page or lower, where they will be ?buried? and attract less attention. If you have negative reviews online, you could be losing thousands of dollars a month and not even know it.

Are there any benefits that come from negative feedback online?

Although negative feedback is unquestionably bad, it can, in fact, provide you with valuable insights about your operations and alert you to problems at your practice. Stay on top of all reviews posted and be proactive about avoiding similar problems in the future. In my opinion, many complaints happen because of poor management.

If you are running a company with at least 5 employees, most often you may not be directly aware of client interaction with some of your staff. ?Negative online reviews are great source of customer feedback. You might also want to consider establishing a medium through which your customers can give you direct feedback. Maybe try placing a review form on your website.

What things do small business customers complain about most?

As a reputation management consultant, my company currently helps many customers with their reputation management, especially with Yelp. I have personally read thousands of negative reviews on Yelp and what I can tell you as being the #1 complaint on Yelp are issues with staff. Oftentimes businesses such as restaurants or medical practices do not have proper management. Most often staff that are under poor management do not do their jobs correctly, either because of lack of proper training or because no one is giving them warnings when they make mistakes. So even though the staff might be the problem, ultimately as a business owner it is your responsibility to be aware of what is going on and properly train your staff or provide necessary warnings to those that fail at their tasks.

Some customers are more sensitive than others, and you never know for sure what will tick someone off. Sometimes, if a customer is bent on being dissatisfied, even doing the best job possible will not help you avoid a negative review.

Are there ways to be proactive when it comes to protecting the reputation of you business?

The best reputation defense is to resolve them as soon as you spot them. If you?re paying attention, you can tell when a customer gets upset. Don?t argue with such customers. Instead, offer a discount or a full refund to avoid getting a potential negative review. You never want to lose a returning customer because of an isolated incident, and you certainly don?t want to lose new customers over negative reviews online. With bad reviews, you could potentially lose dozens of new customers each month. The flipside, of course, is that a happy customer can refer business to you through word of mouth, and also through positive online reviews.

What is the best way for a business to maintain a good reputation?

Your reputation matters, regardless of your company?s size. What people see when they search for you online has an impact whether you?re a one-person show or a giant, multinational company with complex customers.

Owning the top 10 sites that appear in Google and other search engines when your name or that of your business is queried is one way to thwart high-ranking negative information. The easiest way to own the Top 10 for your brand is to create many social media profiles and to launch some blogs. Keep in mind that it?s not just the search engines you need to worry about?sites like Yelp and other review platforms have the potential to do a lot of harm.

Do sites like Yelp really have an impact on small businesses?

Getting negative reviews on Yelp can be very bad for small local businesses. It can cost your business a lot of income. Yelp, a social networking review website launched in 2004, really took off in 2009. Its business model is based on user-generated reviews for local businesses. Yelp uses a 5-star rating system and has mechanisms to stop spammers from posting false reports, and business owners from creating 5-star reports for themselves. You may often see filtered reviews on Yelp (click on the pertinent link at the bottom of any Yelp page to view these). The score from filtered reviews is not added to a business?s overall rating because Yelp has deemed them untrustworthy.

The reviews of new Yelp users and of those whose accounts are not very active tend to get filtered. Reviews are likely to be filtered if the Yelp account they?re coming from is less than 3 months old and has less than 10 reviews. Lack of activity, friends, or a profile picture can all result in filtered reviews.

Concern has been voiced about Yelp pressuring businesses into paying for Yelp advertisements by purposely displaying more negative reviews than positive ones. Many business owners claim they?ve been told by Yelp sales-people that unless they advertise with them, their businesses? positive reviews will be removed. In 2010, Yelp was hit with a class-action lawsuit by business owners claiming extortion, saying that Yelp demanded $300 a month, or more, for the removal or modification of negative listings. The forum Yelp Sucks also has posts from users with related issues.

Can businesses remove negative listings from yelp?

Usually, you cannot remove negative listings from Yelp, but there are a few ways to try, and sometimes, achieve it. For instance, Yelp has strict guidelines and Terms of Service (TOS). If a reviewer posts a review violating the TOS, you can request its removal. Examples of Yelp TOS violations include copyright infringements and third-party-perspective reviews?all these qualify for removal.

Besides Yelp, the only person who can remove a review is its original author. You may want to reach out to the reviewer to try and resolve the issues that led to the negative review. Perhaps some refund or free service may get the reviewer to remove the offending commentary. You can contact the reviewer from within Yelp. However, if you know the reviewer and have their contact info, then reach out to them by phone.

Legal action is another resort, especially in cases of false reviews. To proceed, you need to know who the reviewer is so you can file and serve the appropriate legal documents. This is a costly option. Nevertheless, if you feel a review is especially damaging, at minimum, have an attorney send a cease-and-desist letter to the poster.

The only other option to mitigate negative reviews is to improve your tally of positive ones. To do this, I recommend that you always ask your happy clients to post reviews on Yelp. Some businesses like to provide incentives, like discounts for those that leave positive reviews, but be aware that this practice goes against Yelp?s policies.

Is there a way for businesses to prevent negative reviews from showing up on Google?s first page?

Yes, you can, but it is a time-consuming process, and often expensive. You would either need to dedicate a lot of time to it, or hire an SEO or Reputation Management expert to help you. Below are tips on a few things you can do.

How can small businesses use social media to improve their reputation?

Negative reviews on Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites are harmful, but social media can be used to benefit your business greatly. Planned, proactive participation in social media can create positive buzz around your brand. Moreover, social media sites ? Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Twitter and YouTube, to name a few ? possess enormous inherent power to have any profile you create on them rank for your brand. Just make sure that the profiles you create contain your brand?s name. This is one way to push down negative content that?s appearing in search engines.

Creating new blogs with your brand name in the domain name, or URL, is also a great idea. WordPress, Blogger, and Tumblr are sites that allow you to create blogs with subdomains. You may want to use your brand as part of the subdomain (i.e., http://yourbrand.wordspress.com). Take note that simply creating profiles isn?t enough. Once created, profiles need to be updated regularly through posted content and other activities, like adding Friends and Liking. To carry this out properly, my recommendation is to register profiles on as many social media sites as possible. I recommend a minimum of 300 different profiles.

Registering your brand on multiple social media sites has an additional benefit: it locks down your brand name on them, meaning you won?t risk losing your name to cyber squatters or to someone likely to associate negative content with your name. There are services out there that offer bulk social media profile creations, so don?t waste your time doing this one at a time.

Are there any other steps that businesses can take to further protect their reputation?

If you don?t already own all the different variations of the domain name for your brand, including versions with dashes and different TLDs (i.e., .com, .net, .org, .biz, et cetera), then start registering them right away. In my estimation, it?s best to likewise grab your domain name with the addition of words like ?sucks? and ?reviews? at the end. Doing so will impede those tempted to launch a site with negative content about you. There?s overwhelming evidence indicating that major search engines use keywords in domain names as a ranking factor. That?s why having these types of domains, and launching sites with them, is a good way to prevent negative reputations from arising.

But be careful! Duplicating content from your main site on extra domains is detrimental. Google actually uses its Duplicate Content Algorithm to filter out duplicated content. If you?re going to create extra sites, make sure that each one has unique content about your brand, and that you?re engaging good SEO and Link Building practices.

How can small businesses recover from negative reviews and rebuild their reputation?

If an incident has created negative publicity for your company, consider reaching out to the media and publicly explaining the situation and/or apologizing to your customers. One of my clients had the unfortunate experience of dealing with a shooting at his establishment that resulted in an employee?s death. His business lost a lot of money. To avoid similar situations in the future, this client increased security and installed video surveillance at his establishment. Heeding my recommendation, the client afterwards issued a press release announcing the improvements. He got the word out about the work he was doing to make his clients feel safe, and more likely to return to his business.

It is relatively cheap to put out a press release. Via PRWeb, it?ll only run you $200. You should also contact local press outlets and send the press releases directly. You might try asking local press to interview you about your business, or to find an angle that could result in news coverage for you. Press coverage helps in two ways:

  1. Clients get some positive information about you.
  2. Online press coverage tends to rank high in search engines.

What other ways can businesses strengthen their reputation?

You may have heard it before: in SEO, content is king. Well, it is also king for reputation management. Create as much content as possible about your company or brand and post it on your own websites. Then, submit it to other sites for publication. Try writing pieces about your industry, such as ?How To? articles, and sending them to industry publications or blogs as guest postings. Don?t forget to make these blogs and articles link back to your company and to some of your social media profiles, if possible; that way, the links will help your other properties rank higher.

Is there a specific type of content that works best for building a reputation?

Start uploading videos to YouTube. Google owns YouTube, and the site is so popular that clips posted there may naturally rank on Google?s first page. Imagine, YouTube is the third most visited website, so a video on YouTube may even help you get more business. Providing short, 3-5 minute videos about your profession and business, or informational and ?How To? videos, can be favorable. A dental client of mine has created scores of dentistry-related videos. Not only are those videos ranking on the first page of Google for the name of his practice, but they are ranking in both Google and YouTube for particular keywords.

What can reputation management companies do to fix a business? online reputation?

Most people view their cars as valuable possessions, and when they break down, they take them to expert mechanics, ASAP! Smart people go to experts when something valuable breaks down, even if capable of doing a decent fix-it job themselves. If your brand is experiencing trouble, do you have the skills to fix it? You might know a little bit about SEO, such as how to build links, or understand general concepts related to public relations. But still, you?re no expert. Your company?s reputation is more valuable than your car, by far, so doesn?t it make sense to have an expert take a look at its problems, and heed his or her recommendations?

Can agencies help?

Reputation management agencies can do much to repair your reputation on search engines. They help you build up a positive reputation by ensuring that disparaging information that?s showing up on popular searches for your name, or other important terms related to you, does not rank well. Reputation management agencies can create positive PR for you by getting strategic articles about your company placed in popular websites. This works stupendously when such websites have names similar to terms related to what potential customers are searching for. With this action plan, advantageous information about you will be found by customers searching for your associated keywords, as well as ?review? and similar items.

Agencies can also make sure that people produce glowing content about you, organically. Some agencies may have relationships with top publications and journalists to secure good reviews about your product. A good reputation management company will consult with you on all available options, and recommend the best tactics to better your reputation. As experts, they can even guide you through the process of acquiring an attorney to have negative content legally removed, when that is a possibility.

What do you recommend for businesses whose reputations have been damaged online?

The Internet goes both ways?it can generate great wealth for your business by helping you reach many new customers, and it can wreak havoc on your reputation and income. Online negative reviews are among the worst things to deal with, and any business is a target. For small business, having positive reviews on sites like Yelp is essential. And it?s a mistake to wait until you have negative reviews to act. If you have a plan in place to increase your positive reviews on an ongoing basis, you will be better positioned to weather the impact of any negative reviews you receive later. The cost of increasing positive reviews is low compared to the thousands of dollars that can be lost in production after receiving negative ones.

If you need help with your reputation, talk with an expert about recapturing your good standing. Be sure to select whom you engage with carefully. There are scammers who?ll post negative content about you in order to later play savior by removing it. Others are so new to the industry that they can offer little tangible benefits. Check your provider?s reputation online before entrusting them with your own Web presence. Finding a good reputation company is kind of like finding a good dentist?you need to find skilled, ethical, and honest treatment.

Levitating magician: How magicians use science to deceive

Levitating magician: A viral Pepsi ad shows an English magician apparently levitating alongside a double-decker bus. How are we so easily fooled by magic?

By Eoin O'Carroll,?Staff / June 27, 2013

A TV commercial posted online shows an English magician named Dynamo apparently levitating off the side of one of London's iconic double-decker buses, as amazed onlookers gape, point, and, because this is 2013, shoot photos and video with their phones. He then slides off the bus, produces a can of Pepsi Max, opens it, and takes a sip.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

It was posted on Monday, and by Thursday afternoon, it already had more than 2.3 million views. Have a look at the video at the top of this page, if you haven't done so already.

"If you can just take a moment to look at things from a new perspective," says Dynamo in his gentle Yorkshire accent, "you might see the world in a whole new light."?

So how did Dynamo do it? Here, we reveal his secret: He had the soda can in his pocket the whole time.?

OK, we're not going to say how Dynamo floated alongside the bus: Exposing the secrets of individual magicians serves only to diminish the entertainment. (It can also ruin their livelihoods, and why would we want to do that?)?

So instead, we'll just give away how every magician everywhere performs every illusion. And we'll share some cognitive psychology with you along the way.

At the heart of every illusion is misdirection, the manipulation of the audience's attention. ?

"Everyone knows what attention is," wrote William James in his seminal 1890 work, "Principles of Psychology."

"It is the taking possession by the mind, in clear and vivid form, of one out of what seem several simultaneously possible objects or trains of thought. Focalization, concentration, of consciousness are of its essence. It implies withdrawal from some things in order to deal effectively with others, and is a condition which has a real opposite in the confused, dazed, scatterbrained state which in French is called distraction, and Zerstreutheit in German."

And skilled magicians are the ultimate?Zerstreutheitmeisters. Gesturing hands, shiny props, dazzling spotlights, flying doves, "assistants" in sparkly outfits, and, in Dynamo's case, waggling feet and a smartphone are all expertly deployed to take your mind off of where the "magic" ? usually a fairly straightforward mechanism ? is really happening. And we fall for it almost every time.

We get fooled for two big reasons: The first is that we aren't able to take in all of the stimuli in our environment all at once. You might think that you're eyes are merely windows to the outside world, but the picture that you're seeing right now is mostly a simulation. As you focus your attention on these words, the rest your visual field is sketched out in only the barest detail. It only appears like a rich vista because your brain is constantly filling in the gaps, not with what it actually perceives, but with what it expects to perceive. ?

Want proof? Place your left hand over your left eye. Extend your right arm forward, with your index finger raised. Now, staring at a point straight ahead, and not at your finger, slowly move your arm to the right. When your arm is at an angle of about 15 degrees, the tip of your finger will vanish. Presto!

Gale Continues to Grow its Digital Collections Program with ...

New Collections Added to State Papers Online, Slavery and Anti-Slavery, and The Making of Modern Law

Farmington Hills, Mich., June 26, 2013 ? Gale, part of Cengage Learning and a leading publisher of research and reference resources for libraries, schools and businesses, today announced the availability of several new collections in the Gale Digital Collections program ? State Papers Online: Eighteenth Century, Part 1: Domestic, Military, Naval and the Registers of the Privy Council; The Making of Modern Law: Foreign Primary Sources, 1600-1970; and the final installment in the Slavery and Anti-Slavery series ? Part IV: The Age of Emancipation.

?No other publisher matches our extensive collections in historical legal documents and the history of slavery, and the launch of these latest collections is a testament to our continued investment in new products that will enhance the research and discovery experience for students and faculty alike,? said Jim Draper, vice president and general manager, Gale.

The new collections, targeted to academic, special and public libraries, are currently available for purchase and trial and include:

  • State Papers Online: Eighteenth Century, 1714-1782, Part 1: Domestic, Military, Naval and the Registers of the Privy Council ? This collection initiates the final section of the State Papers series from the National Archives, Kew, UK. Part 1 offers historians access to 300,000 folios of rare British government manuscript documents from the reigns of King George I, King George II and part of the reign of King George III. The workings of government can be followed in the minutes in the registers of the Privy Council as well as the correspondence of the Secretaries of State. Key themes covered include the development of rule by parliament, the establishment of the British Empire as a dominant Colonial power, the development of agriculture and industrialization and European Enlightenment. It will be followed by Parts 2 and 3 which cover ?foreign? material on British affairs with Europe and Russia.
  • The Making of Modern Law: Foreign Primary Sources, 1600-1970 ? The seventh installment in The Making of Modern Law series, this collection complements the treatises found in Foreign, Comparative and International Law 1600-1926. Whereas Foreign, Comparative and International Law 1600- 1970 is a collection of treatises, mostly on public international law and the laws of countries around the world, this new archive is a collection of books of historical codes and statutes, the ?primary sources? of legal research. The individual codes and commentaries in this installment are based on the holdings of the great law library collections of Harvard, Yale and George Washington University.
  • Slavery and Anti-Slavery Part IV: The Age of Emancipation ? The fourth installment in the Slavery and Anti-Slavery: A Transnational Archive series begins in 1788 with Lord Dunmore?s offer of emancipation and ends in 1896 with Plessy v. Ferguson. It includes a range of rare documents related to emancipation in the United States, as well as Latin America, the Caribbean, and other areas of the world. It covers the time of the American Revolution, when northern states freed relatively small numbers of slaves, to later periods when an increasingly large free black community was developing, and emancipation became a political and moral expectation.

Flipboard and NFL Fantasy Football apps coming to Windows 8

Windows 8.1 preview was the first big announcement to come out of Build 2013, but Ballmer's not done with the software goodies. Turns out, Facebook, Flipboard and NFL Fantasy Football apps are coming to Windows 8. Naturally, we haven't seen what these (presumably) Metro-styled apps will look like, but it's good to know they're coming, right?

What?s in Obama?s Climate Plan?

DEAR ABBY: I was taken away from my parents at 13 and placed into foster care, where I stayed until I aged out at 21. My biological mother is a drug addict who abandoned me to my father when I was 11. She never tried to contact me while I was in care.I am now 24 and she won't leave me alone. She sends Facebook messages that alternate between begging me to let her get to know me, and condemning me for being vindictive and not having forgiveness in my heart. Abby, this woman exposed me to drugs and all manner of seedy people and situations. ...

Northwestern Medicine cardiac electrophysiologist publishes research on how to integrate personalized, evidence-based care so patients benefit

There are two popular models when it comes to delivering the best healthcare using evidence-based guidelines or applying personalized medicine. Each method has its own merits and drawbacks, but according to one Northwestern Medicine cardiologist, when the two theories are integrated the result is an optimal healthcare delivery model that is both less expensive and better for the patient.

"It should not be one or the other but instead a combination of both," said Jeffrey Goldberger, MD, an attending cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and director of Cardiac Electrophysiology Research at Northwestern's Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute.

"My interest in evidence-based medicine and personalized medicine stems from my involvement in the problem the medical community has in identifying patients who are at risk for sudden cardiac deaths. Using the guidelines I outlined in my article, I think we can better treat patients with implantable defibrillators. Based on the research, we are clearly over treating some patients and not treating other patients who would benefit."

Goldberger's research was published in a June 25, 2013 article in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Evidence-based medicine dates back to ancient Greece but gained popularity in the 1990s. It consists of basing treatment on the body of clinical data and clinical trials available. Personalized medicine is tailoring medical treatment to the individual characteristics of each patient, focusing on a patient's family history, genetic testing, or other characteristics.

According to Goldberger, who is also a professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, physicians should not follow one theory over the other. Instead, they should bring in personalized medicine to treat those subgroups not helped using evidence-based guidelines, he said.

"For example, many physicians administer a thrombolytic, or clot-dissolving drug, when someone is having a heart attack because the clinical data show those drugs help most patients," Goldberger said. "However, for some older patients these drugs can cause a stroke, so it's best to use personalized medicine to determine the best treatment for these older patients."

"Cultivating a healthcare culture poised to explore these opportunities is critical, but it will entail active participation from a whole range of stakeholders, including physicians, insurers, regulators and healthcare organizations," Goldberger added. "By combining both theories, we have a real opportunity to deliver more precise treatments to the exact patient population who needs it."

In addition to his clinical practice and teaching, Goldberger is an editorial consultant and reviewer for more than 20 medical journals. His clinical interests include pacemakers, cardiac rhythm disorders, catheter ablation, implantable defibrillators and supraventricular tachycardia.

Pneumonia outbreak threatens bighorn sheep in California, Nevada

By Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A pneumonia outbreak is threatening hundreds of bighorn sheep in California's Mojave National Preserve, and wildlife officials said Monday they see no promising options for saving the state's biggest herd or protecting a nearby population in Nevada.

The disease is believed to have killed 20 bighorn sheep during the past month in the 1.6-million-acre (650,000-hectare) desert preserve, which lies 50 miles southwest of Las Vegas, National Park Service spokeswoman Linda Slater said.

"I suspect that many more are infected," Slater said, adding that the entire herd, numbering as many as 300 animals, is in danger. "The biologists seem to be very pessimistic."

Potential options under consideration include shooting some or all of the remaining members of the herd in a bid to prevent further spread of the disease, or continuing to monitor the situation and essentially let nature run its course, wildlife officials said.

"There really are no good options," Slater said.

Episodic waves of disease have thinned bighorn herds for years. Fewer than 100,000 sheep are believed to roam the rugged mountain slopes of the West today, compared with an estimated 1.2 million head that inhabited the region at one time.

A series of nine separate outbreaks across five western states, including Nevada, in the winter of 2009-2010 claimed roughly 1,000 bighorn sheep, prized as game animals for the prominent curled horns of the adult males, or rams.

The current outbreak is the most severe ever to hit the desert species of bighorn sheep in California, home to 5,200 head in roughly 60 herds across the state, said Steve Torres, a supervisor for the California Fish and Wildlife Department's investigations lab.

It was also the first to hit the Mojave National Preserve since it was established in 1994.

The infected bighorn herd, one of five groups in the Mojave preserve, is a "foundation" herd and one of California's healthiest, used to re-establish the species in other parts of the state, officials said. It also is the state's largest.

Tests have confirmed that at least five of the animals on Old Dad Mountain died from a strain of pneumonia carried by domestic sheep and goats that is usually fatal when transmitted to bighorn sheep, which have no natural defenses to the disease.

Nevada wildlife officials worry the disease could spread to their state's nearest herd, just 45 miles to the northeast, especially now that rutting season is beginning and males are known to wander as far as 100 miles from home.

But Nevada officials are hoping that an extreme hot spell in the forecast will tend to keep young rams close to their familiar water sources.

California's wildlife investigator Torres said another big jump in infections within the herd could come with the start of mating season next month.

Astronaut Wives Dish On What It's Like Being Married To An Astronaut (VIDEO)

Astronaut wives were the "American royalty" of the 1960s, catapulted into the spotlight by their husbands, the Mercury Seven -- NASA's first astronauts.

But though they were seen smiling on the cover of "Life" magazine and drinking tea with Jackie Kennedy, things weren't always so peachy at home, says author Lily Koppel, who stopped by HuffPost Live on Monday to dish on her new book, The Astronaut Wives Club.

"There was very much a credo that the woman [I interviewed] have shared with me that was if you don't have a happy marriage, your husband is not going to have a space flight," she said. "So even when things weren't picture perfect at home, they had to look picture perfect on the cover of 'Life.'"

Also joining Koppel were several of the astronaut wives that she interviewed for her book. Sue Bean, the former wife of Alan Bean, said that her ex's missions took a toll on their marriage.

"After the lunar flight, I think sometimes the guys saw things a little bit differently. That type of experience can't help but change your outlook on the world, and we drifted apart," she said. "I became more independent and basically wanted him to not fly again. He flew two flights and backed up a third and I think that it probably wasn't a good idea to express my wishes because he loved doing what he did. There were other ladies that cared about him and I guess in the end it was more than our marriage could sustain."

Watch the clip above to hear more on what it's like being married to an astronaut.

Czech prime minister says he will resign

PRAGUE (AP) ? Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas announced Sunday that he will resign over a spy and bribery scandal involving his government.

Necas said he also will quit on Monday as chairman of his conservative Civic Democratic Party.

He has been under pressure to quit since police conducted raids all across the country this week and arrested eight people, including Necas' closest aide and the head of his office, Jana Nagyova. She was charged with ordering a military intelligence agency to spy on three people, including Necas' estranged wife.

Seven other people, including the current and former heads of the Military Intelligence agency and three former lawmakers of his party, were charged with bribery or misuse of power.

"I am aware of my political responsibility," Necas said.

His decision will end his three-party coalition government, which was created after the 2010 parliamentary election. But Necas said he hopes it can stay in power until a parliamentary election planned next year.

This is an optimal solution of the current situation," Necas said. Two coalition partners, the conservative TOP 09 party and the Liberal Democrats, agreed with that plan Sunday.

"We're obliged to do all we can for the government to continue," said Finance Minister Miroslav Kalousek, the deputy head of TOP 09.

That might not happen, however. It is up to the President Milos Zeman to select a new prime minister who would try to form a new government, and it is not immediately clear if he is ready to accept such a solution. The current coalition also doesn't have a clear parliamentary majority and governs with the help from independent lawmakers.

Early elections also are not easy to call because it would have to be approved by three-fifths of the 200 lawmakers, and the opposition does not have enough seats to force it.

The negotiations between the parties are expected to start immediately, and it is not clear how much time they will need to find a solution to the crisis.

Earlier this week, prosecutors said Nagyova was suspected of directing the alleged illegal surveillance without any authorization. In their explanation for the sweeping raids at government offices and other locations, they said Nagyova's motives were "purely private."

Necas announced earlier this week that he and his wife, Radka, have filed for divorce. Newspapers have speculated about an affair between him and Nagyova.
