DOTA 2 Breaks Steam Gaming Record - Kotaku

Over the weekend, Valve's DOTA 2 broke the record for most concurrent gamers playing on Steam. It surpassed the previous record set by...Valve's DOTA 2.

On Saturday, 328,713 people were playing the company's still-in-beta MOBA title. At the same time. That's crazy.

Not as crazy as the numbers of its main competitor, League of Legends - which claims to have over 500,000 concurrent players in just one region - but still, impressive.

Manzarek, founding member of The Doors, dies at 74

Ray Manzarek, a founding member of the 1960s rock group The Doors whose versatile and often haunting keyboards complemented Jim Morrison's gloomy baritone and helped set the mood for some of rock's most enduring songs, has died. He was 74.

Manzarek died Monday in Rosenheim, Germany, surrounded by his family, said publicist Heidi Robinson-Fitzgerald. She said the musician's manager, Tom Vitorino, confirmed Manzarek died after being stricken with bile duct cancer.

The Doors' original lineup, which also included drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robbie Krieger, was only together for a few years and they only made six studio albums. But the band has retained a large and obsessive following decades after Morrison's 1971 death. The Doors have sold more than 100 million records and songs such as "Light My Fire" and "Riders On the Storm" are still "classic" rock favorites. For Doors admirers, the band symbolized the darker side of the Los Angeles lifestyle, what happened to the city after the sun went down and the Beach Boys fans headed home.

The Doors' vibe "has more to do with Charles Bukowski than it does with Farrah Fawcett," said John Doe of punk band X, a friend of Manzarek's for more than 30 years, referring to the poet and 'Charlie's Angels' star, respectively. "It has more to do with Raymond Chandler and Nathaniel West, and 'Sunset Boulevard' the movie, than it does with 'Beach Blanket Bingo,' right? ... It's a real dark place out in LA."

Next to Morrison, Manzarek was the most distinctive-looking band member, his glasses and wavy blond hair making him resemble a young English professor more than a rock star, a contrast to Morrison's Dionysian glamour ? his sensuous mouth and long, dark hair. Musically, Manzarek's spidery organ on "Light My Fire" is one of the most instantly recognizable sounds in rock history.

But he seemed up to finding the right touch for a wide range of songs ? the sleepy, lounge-style keyboards on "Riders On the Storm"; the liquid strains for "The Crystal Ship"; the barrelhouse romps on "Roadhouse Blues." The Doors always considered themselves "more" than a rock band and Manzarek, Densmore and Krieger often managed a flowing rapport that blended rock, blues and jazz behind Morrison's self-consciously poetic lyrics.

"There was no keyboard player on the planet more appropriate to support Jim Morrison's words," Densmore said in a statement. "Ray, I felt totally in sync with you musically. It was like we were of one mind, holding down the foundation for Robby and Jim to float on top of. I will miss my musical brother."

The Doors were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. Their records have been reissued frequently and the band was the subject of a 1991 Oliver Stone movie, "The Doors," starring Val Kilmer as Morrison and Kyle MacLachlan as Manzarek, who complained that the film stereotyped Morrison as a hopeless drunk and also omitted calmer, more humorous times.

The Doors' fame has hardly faded even though they're one of the few groups not to allow their music to be used for commercials, a source of great tension among surviving members. Manzarek and Krieger reportedly supported licensing the songs, and Densmore has resisted. The group also feuded when Krieger and Manzarek formed a new group, Doors of the 21st Century. Densmore objected, and Krieger and Manzarek performed under various names.

Other Doors albums included "The Soft Parade," ''Waiting for the Sun" and their last record with Morrison, "L.A. Woman."

Manzarek briefly tried to hold the band together on the albums "Other Voices" and "Full Circle," neither of which had critical or commercial success. He played in other bands over the years, working with X and Iggy Pop among others. He also wrote a memoir, "Light My Fire," and a novel, "The Poet In Exile," in which he imagines receiving messages from a Morrison-like artist who had supposedly died.

He produced four albums for X, including another landmark album "Los Angeles," and played off and on with the band for three decades. Doe said Manzarek enjoyed his place in rock 'n' roll history.

"He enjoyed people's company greatly. He was always interested in what had been going on with you and he was an incredible teller of stories, a sort of raconteur of spiritualism and wild moments ? 'weird scenes inside the gold mine,'" he said referencing a lyric from "The End."

"Ray loved to talk about and sort of mythologize, but it was all based in truth."

Born and raised in Chicago, Manzarek studied piano as a child and briefly considered a career in basketball. After graduating from DePauw University, he headed west to study film at UCLA. A few months after graduation, he and Morrison met in 1965 on Venice Beach in California. As Manzarek would often recall, Morrison read him some lyrics ? Let's swim to the moon/Let's climb through the tide/Penetrate the evening that the/City sleeps to hide" ? that became the start of "Moonlight Drive."

"I'd never heard lyrics to a rock song like that before," Manzarek told Billboard in 1967. "We talked a while before we decided to get a group together and make a million dollars."

By 1966, they had been joined by Krieger and Densmore and were a sensation live, especially during the theatrical, Oedipal epic, "The End." They were the house band at the famed Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles before being signed by Elektra Records and releasing a self-titled album in 1967, one of the most talked-about debuts in rock history.

"Well, to me, my God, for anybody who was there it means it was a fantastic time," Manzarek told The Republican in Massachusetts during an interview last year. "We thought we could actually change the world ? to make it a more Christian, Islamic, Judaic, Buddhist, Hindu, loving world. We thought we could. The children of the '50s post-war generation were actually in love with life and had opened the doors of perception. And we were in love with being alive and wanted to spread that love around the planet and make peace, love and harmony prevail upon earth, while getting stoned, dancing madly and having as much sex as you could possibly have."

Manzarek is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his son Pablo and two brothers, Rick and James. Funeral arrangements are pending.

How corporations pressure government into tax breaks and subsidies

Google, Amazon, Starbucks, every other major corporation, and every big Wall Street bank, are sheltering as much of their US profits abroad as they can, Reich writes, while telling Washington that lower corporate taxes are necessary in order to keep the US 'competitive.'

As global capital becomes ever more powerful, giant corporations are holding governments and citizens up for ransom ? eliciting subsidies and tax breaks from countries concerned about their nation?s ?competitiveness? ? while sheltering their profits in the lowest-tax jurisdictions they can find. Major advanced countries ? and their citizens ? need a comprehensive tax agreement that won?t allow global corporations to get away with this.

Google, Amazon, Starbucks, every other major corporation, and every big Wall Street bank, are sheltering as much of their U.S. profits abroad as they can, while telling Washington that lower corporate taxes are necessary in order to keep the U.S. ?competitive.?

Baloney. The fact is, global corporations have no allegiance to any country; their only objective is to make as much money as possible ? and play off one country against another to keep their taxes down and subsidies up, thereby shifting more of the tax burden to ordinary people whose wages are already shrinking because companies are playing workers off against each other.?

I?m in London for a few days, and all the talk here is about how Goldman Sachs just negotiated a sweetheart deal to settle a tax dispute with the British government; Google is manipulating its British sales to pay almost no taxes here by using its low-tax Ireland subsidiary (the chair of the Parliamentary committee investigating this has just called the do-no-evil firm ?devious, calculating, and unethical?); Amazon has been found to route its British sales through a subsidiary in low-tax Luxembourg, and now receives more in subsidies from the British government than it pays here in taxes; Starbucks? tax-avoidance strategy was so blatant British consumers began boycotting the firm until it reversed course. ?

S.Africa's African Bank H1 profit slides as bad debts bite

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African mass market lender African Bank Investments posted a 26 percent drop in first-half earnings on Monday, hit by rising bad debts from its heavily leveraged customers.

The company also warned its retail furniture business would likely fall to a loss for the year, as demand from cash-strapped consumers wanes.

African Bank, known as Abil, said headline earnings for the six months to March totalled 125.7 cents, compared with 170.4 cents a year earlier.

The bank targets millions of low-income South Africans through loans and furniture, which it sells on credit.

The furniture business is likely to see a "small loss" for the full-year, Chief Financial Officer Nithia Nalliah told reporters on a conference call.

Abil and its rivals are seeing a spike in bad loans after years of aggressive lending in Africa's top economy.

Household debt levels currently stand at around a record of 76 percent of disposable income.

'Apprentice': Who won the boardroom battle?

Donald Trump sizes up the "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice" finalists while boardroom advisor Joan Rivers looks on.

They started out as teammates on "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice," but on Sunday night, Penn Jillette and Trace Adkins faced off in a final battle for boardroom bragging rights. And the winner is ? a big guy with a ponytail.

But which one?

"I think I delivered the best ice cream, I made the best commercial, I put on the best show, I brought in the biggest celebrities and I raised the most money," Trace told Donald Trump just before the big boss made his call.

Trump just couldn't argue those points, so he named the country crooner the best of the all-star bunch (and awarded his charity, the American Red Cross, $250,000, while sponsor Walgreens kicked in $100,000 more).

As for Jillette, he had a couple of victories of his own. Although he didn't raise as much money as Adkins in the final challenge, his ice cream actually sold more pints when it hit store shelves. If that mini-win wasn't enough, the sponsor then awarded Jillette's charity, Opportunity Village, $100,000.

But there were a few people in the boardroom who didn't win anything on Sunday night -- the fired players who came back to watch the finale showdown. That group included dueling divas Omarosa and La Toya Jackson, who, thankfully, had a Gary Busey buffer between them.

What did you think of the "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice" results?

Bernanke upbeat on innovation outlook in commencement address

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke painted an upbeat picture on Saturday for the potential of innovation to lift living standards, delivering a sweeping look at the last 100 years that included memories of his 1963 South Carolina home.

Bernanke made no reference to monetary policy or the immediate outlook for the U.S. economy in prepared remarks to graduates of Bard College at Simon's Rock, Massachusetts.

But the die-hard baseball fan did manage to work in a reference to one of the sport's greats.

"Is it true, then, as baseball player Yogi Berra said, that the future ain't what it used to be?," the chairman said, noting the existence of serious skepticism that leaps in computers and other information technology would yield the same dramatic boost to growth and living standards as previous episodes of industrial revolution.

"Nobody really knows; as Berra also astutely observed, it's tough to make predictions, especially about the future. But there are some good arguments on the other side of this debate."

Bernanke delivers testimony on the U.S. economy on Wednesday before the congressional Joint Economic Committee.

His words will be parsed for any hint that he favors tapering Fed bond purchases, currently running at an $85 billion monthly pace. But recent U.S. economic data has been mixed, and economists polled by Reuters continue to expect the bond buying to continue until later this year, if not into early 2014.

Bernanke did not tip his hand during his comments to graduates, but he did offer some rare insights into his childhood home in Dillon, South Carolina to illustrate how life has not changed all that much in the last 50 years.

"We had a dishwasher, a washing machine, and a dryer. My family owned a comfortable car with air conditioning and a radio, and the experience of commercial flight was much like today but without the long security lines," he recalled.

There was no internet, but there was a color television "although, I must acknowledge, the colors were garish and there were many fewer channels to choose from."

After pointing out that the so-called IT revolution had not been as transformative as all that, Bernanke then went on to outline several areas where technology may only have scratched the surface in exploiting the potential for change.

He argued that IT and biotechnology have tremendous scope to improve healthcare - which absorbs a considerable amount of U.S. household income and where costs are projected to rise - as well as the potential for the development of cleaner energy.

"As trade and globalization increase the size of the potential market for new products, the possible economic rewards for being first with an innovative product or process are growing rapidly," he said. "In short, both humanity's capacity to innovate and the incentives to innovate are greater today than at any other time in history."

Tornado-ravaged Texas town to start recovery

GRANBURY, Texas (AP) ? Residents whose homes were torn apart or blown away by a North Texas deadly tornado can soon return to retrieve what belongings may be left and start cleaning up, authorities said Friday.

In Granbury, the area hardest hit by Wednesday night's exceptionally strong tornado, workers are trying to restore water service, raise electrical lines and clear debris piles filled with insulation, roof tiles, pieces of carpet, a shoe, a teddy bear, a woman's purse.

Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds said authorities will only allow residents of the Rancho Brazos Estates neighborhood back in to survey things starting Saturday morning.

But Jerry Shuttlesworth won't be one of them. He doesn't know where his mobile home ended up, but he finally has his only treasured possession: his bull-terrier mix, Junior, who had been missing since the tornado that left six people dead swept through the city 40 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

Shuttlesworth, 53, broke three bones in one of his feet and suffered a 2-inch gash in his forehead.

Friends helped spread the word about his dog through social media. On Friday, someone found Junior and took him to a shelter, where a worker called Shuttlesworth.

"You could call it a miracle," he said. "He's scratched up and a little traumatized, but he's eating. He's my baby. I don't care about anything else."

Gov. Rick Perry and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott on Friday toured Granbury, which bore the brunt of the damage during Wednesday's outbreak of 16 tornadoes in North Texas.

Perry said the devastation is almost incomprehensible. Abbott urged residents to be cautious of those who might try to scam them as they rebuild.

The National Weather Service said Friday that the Granbury tornado was an EF-4, based on the Fujita tornado damage scale. Winds in an EF-4 tornado are between 166 and 200 mph. An EF-5 is the most severe.

Earlier Friday, the Hood County Sheriff's Office said the death toll is unlikely to change, as those who were reported missing were with relatives or friends and are safe.

Workers on Friday cleared debris in nearby Cleburne, where a tornado cut a mile-wide path through part of the city Wednesday and damaged about 600 homes. The weather service said it was an EF-3, which has winds between 136 and 165 mph. No deaths or severe injuries were reported.

Last-minute fortune seekers buy Powerball tickets

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? It's all about the odds.

With the majority of possible combinations of Powerball numbers in play, someone is almost sure to win the game's highest jackpot during Saturday night's drawing, a windfall of hundreds of millions of dollars ? and that's after taxes.

The problem, of course, is those same odds just about guarantee the lucky person won't be you.

The chances of winning the estimated $600 million prize remain astronomically low: 1 in 175.2 million. That's how many different ways you can combine the numbers when you play. But lottery officials estimate about 80 percent of those possible combinations have been purchased, so now's the time to buy.

"This would be the roll to get in on," said Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich. "Of course there's no guarantee, and that's the randomness of it, and the fun of it."

That hasn't deterred people across Powerball-playing states ? 43 plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands ? from lining up at gas stations and convenience stores Saturday for their chance at striking it filthy rich.

At a mini market in the heart of Los Angeles' Chinatown, employees broke the steady stream of customers into two lines: One for Powerball ticket buyers and one for everybody else. Some people appeared to be looking for a little karma.

"We've had two winners over $10 million here over the years, so people in the neighborhood think this is the lucky store," employee Gordon Chan said as he replenished a stack of lottery tickets on a counter.

Workers at one suburban Columbia, S.C., convenience store were so busy with ticket buyers that they hadn't updated their sign with the current jackpot figure, which was released Friday. Customer Armous Peterson was reluctant to share his system for playing the Powerball. The 56-year-old was well aware of the long odds, but he also knows the mantra of just about every person buying tickets.

"Somebody is going to win," he said. "Lots of people are going to lose, too. But if you buy a ticket, that winner might be you."

The latest jackpot is the world's second largest overall, just behind a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot in March 2012. The $600 million jackpot, which could grow before the numbers are drawn at 10:59 EDT Saturday, currently includes a $376.9 million cash option.

Charles Hill of Dallas says he buys lottery tickets every day. And he knows exactly what he'd do if he wins.

"What would I do with my money? I'd run and hide," he said. "I wouldn't want none of my kinfolks to find me."

Clyde Barrow, a public policy professor at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, specializes in the gaming industry. He said one of the key factors behind the ticket-buying frenzy is the size of the jackpot ? people are interested in the easy investment.

"Even though the odds are very low, the investment is very small," he said. "Two dollars gets you a chance."

That may be why Ed McCuen has a Powerball habit that's as regular as clockwork. The 57-year-old electrical contractor from Savannah, Ga., buys one ticket a week, regardless of the possible loot. It's a habit he didn't alter Saturday.

"You've got one shot in a gazillion or whatever," McCuen said, tucking his ticket in his pocket as he left a local convenience store. "You can't win unless you buy a ticket. But whether you buy one or 10 or 20, it's insignificant."

Seema Sharma doesn't seem to think so. The newsstand employee in Manhattan's Penn Station has purchased $80 worth of tickets for herself. She also was selling tickets all morning at a steady pace, instructing buyers where to stand if they wanted machine-picked tickets or to choose their own numbers.

"I work very hard ? too hard ? and I want to get the money so I can finally relax," she said. "You never know."

Officials will conduct the drawing live Saturday night from Tallahassee, Fla.

Agriculture in China predates domesticated rice: Discovery of ancient diet shatters conventional ideas of how agriculture emerged

May 17, 2013 ? Archaeologists have made a discovery in southern subtropical China which could revolutionise thinking about how ancient humans lived in the region. They have uncovered evidence for the first time that people living in Xincun 5,000 years ago may have practised agriculture -- before the arrival of domesticated rice in the region.

Current archaeological thinking is that it was the advent of rice cultivation along the Lower Yangtze River that marked the beginning of agriculture in southern China. Poor organic preservation in the study region, as in many others, means that traditional archaeobotany techniques are not possible.

Now, thanks to a new method of analysis on ancient grinding stones, the archaeologists have uncovered evidence that agriculture could predate the advent of rice in the region.

The research was the result of a two-year collaboration between Dr Huw Barton, from the School of Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Leicester, and Dr Xiaoyan Yang, Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in Beijing.

Funded by a Royal Society UK-China NSFC International Joint Project, and other grants held by Yang in China, the research is published in PLOS ONE.

Dr Barton, Senior Lecturer in Bioarchaeology at the University of Leicester, described the find as 'hitting the jackpot': "Our discovery is totally unexpected and very exciting.

"We have used a relatively new method known as ancient starch analysis to analyse ancient human diet. This technique can tell us things about human diet in the past that no other method can.

"From a sample of grinding stones we extracted very small quantities of adhering sediment trapped in pits and cracks on the tool surface. From this material, preserved starch granules were extracted with our Chinese colleagues in the starch laboratory in Beijing. These samples were analysed in China and also here at Leicester in the Starch and Residue Laboratory, School of Archaeology and Ancient History.

"Our research shows us that there was something much more interesting going on in the subtropical south of China 5,000 years ago than we had first thought. The survival of organic material is really dependent on the particular chemical properties of the soil, so you never know what you will get until you sample. At Xincun we really hit the jackpot. Starch was well-preserved and there was plenty of it. While some of the starch granules we found were species we might expect to find on grinding and pounding stones, ie. some seeds and tuberous plants such as freshwater chestnuts, lotus root and the fern root, the addition of starch from palms was totally unexpected and very exciting."

Several types of tropical palms store prodigious quantities of starch. This starch can be literally bashed and washed out of the trunk pith, dried as flour, and of course eaten. It is non-toxic, not particularly tasty, but it is reliable and can be processed all year round. Many communities in the tropics today, particularly in Borneo and Indonesia, but also in eastern India, still rely on flour derived from palms.

Dr Barton said: "The presence of at least two, possibly three species of starch producing palms, bananas, and various roots, raises the intriguing possibility that these plants may have been planted nearby the settlement.

"Today groups that rely on palms growing in the wild are highly mobile, moving from one palm stand to another as they exhaust the clump. Sedentary groups that utilise palms for their starch today, plant suckers nearby the village, thus maintaining continuous supply. If they were planted at Xincun, this implies that 'agriculture' did not arrive here with the arrival of domesticated rice, as archaeologists currently think, but that an indigenous system of plant cultivation may have been in place by the mid Holocene.

"The adoption of domesticated rice was slow and gradual in this region; it was not a rapid transformation as in other places. Our findings may indicate why this was the case. People may have been busy with other types of cultivation, ignoring rice, which may have been in the landscape, but as a minor plant for a long time before it too became a food staple.

"Future work will focus on grinding stones from nearby sites to see if this pattern is repeated along the coast."

Business Plan For Fitness Center What You Need to Know About ...

If you posses a health club you should find out how to debunk the many fitness misconceptions to have potential customers. Likewise ensure you have a good fitness center marketing in the general system to be able to grow. There is so much investigative efforts and studies in healthy lifestyles and fitness, it?s hard to keep up with the volumes of research. Amazing as it seems, there are some who think everything on the internet are facts. There is no end to the numbers of people who are gullible and continue believing in the hype marketing claims. What follows are three specific areas in which false claims have been made, and you can discover the truth and do your own research, of course.

Myth about bread crust is that it is loaded with all the good stuff your body needs, so eat it. Sure, there are some healthy components in crust but not the powerhouse stuff. There are some wheat breads that are much different than the rest, so you have to pick the one you like most. Actually, the crusts of wheat bread are no doubt healthier than an entire slice of white bread, and it will not stick in your gut like white paste bread.

Getting past the smell of fish to eat it is half the battle, and of course some fish have excellent nutrition to support brain function and others. Try out fish on your children and see who likes and who does not, and what you can do is feed them salmon and create it in a tasty way. Most fish are very good for you, but if you are familiar with the issues you will know that salmon is terrific. You can help to maintain your health in so many functions with salmon?s Omega ? 3 fatty acids. There are very many different kinds of omega supplements on the market, so just make sure you get a high quality form.

You may find it ultimately to be not true that weight loss efforts will be smoother and more effective by getting rid of gluten in your diet. This is just another crazy thing to come out of who knows where, but the important point is that it is not true and never will be. There is no connection to the two (losing fat and gluten), and this should be good news for you if you have been avoiding it for that reason, alone.

The biggest clue with losing weight is being active, and how earth shattering is that? People are just lazy, and that?s about it. Any time you are at a crossroads with your health, then you know what the best course of action is ? call your doctor and pay a visit. We are wise to seek the truth and to debunk myths and generally stay informed. But still, you know there are falsehoods out there. Do not be skittish with doing your own research and discovering even more truths. Do you think this is it about truths? Not a chance, so that means there is much more to the stories.

US, Turkey project united front on Syria

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan projected a united front Thursday on Syria, keeping stark differences about how much the U.S. should intervene behind closed doors as they looked to Russia and the global community to close ranks behind efforts to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Under a pair of umbrellas outside a drizzly White House, the two leaders offered no hints about new actions either country would take, but pledged to keep upping the pressure on Assad to leave. After a lengthy meeting focused on Syria, Erdogan sidestepped a question about what he wants Obama to do, even though the Turkish premier has publicly urged the U.S. to take further steps to hasten Assad's departure. And Obama emphasized that if and when the U.S. takes further action, it won't be alone.

"I don't think anybody in the region, including the prime minister, would think that U.S. unilateral actions in and of themselves would bring about a better outcome inside of Syria," Obama said.

Erdogan, speaking in Turkish, called attention to where the U.S. and Turkey have spoken with one voice.

"Our views do overlap," he said. "We will continue to explore what we can do together."

Harmony in the White House Rose Garden obscured the intense debates both leaders are confronting at home and abroad about how to bring to an end a conflict that started in 2011 as a popular uprising and has escalated to claim more than 70,000 lives. Instead, Obama and Erdogan professed both impatience and optimism, hoping that unanimity among allies may compel other players in the conflict ? namely, Russia ? to get in line.

"What we have to do is apply steady international pressure, strengthen the opposition," Obama said. "I do think that the prospect of talks in Geneva involving the Russians and representatives about a serious political transition that all the parties can buy into may yield results."

Mindful that support from Russia, the Syrian regime's most powerful ally, is a key factor allowing Assad to cling to power, the Obama administration is looking hopefully to a joint U.S.-Russian push to launch peace talks between the regime and the opposition, possibly in early June. But those hopes have been somewhat dampened by word that Russia was planning to sell an advanced air defense system to Syria that could complicate further military intervention, and by Russia's demand that U.S. nemesis Iran be included in the talks.

The State Department wouldn't address the Iran demand Thursday, but said the U.S., Russia and others are still working to get talks underway. Secretary of State John Kerry next week will meet with foreign ministers representing America's Arab and European allies in Jordan, while Syria's opposition will discuss its plans at a meeting in Istanbul.

"The goal here," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters, "is to get both sides back to the table to work toward a path toward a political transition."

None of these obstacles was on display after White House meetings Thursday between the U.S. and Turkey, a NATO member and largely secular nation that the U.S. sees as a crucial gateway to engagement with the Muslim world. The two leaders glossed over deep divisions about how actively to support the shadowy array of opposition groups fighting Assad's regime.

"Over the last couple of months, it seemed they were drifting away from each other, and Erdogan was, to put it mildly, disappointed with Obama for not extending the support he thought would come once the U.S. elections were over," said Kemal Kirisci, an expert on Turkish foreign policy at the nonpartisan Brookings Institution. "Today, they seemed to want to project an image to the public that they are on the same wavelength."

The White House is considering arming rebel forces despite concerns about weapons falling into the wrong hands and has already provided some military equipment like body armor in addition to hundreds of millions in humanitarian aid. But Obama, reluctant to mire the U.S. military in another unpredictable conflict, has resisted calls from some lawmakers for more decisive action like enforcing a no-fly zone.

Syria's lethal two-year war assuredly hits closer to home for Turkey, which shares a long southern border with Syria and is sheltering hundreds of thousands of its refugees. Violence spilling over the border reached new heights over the weekend when a pair of car bombs in a Turkish border town killed dozens, raising fears that Turkey is becoming increasingly embroiled in the conflict. Turkish authorities have blamed Syrian intelligence for the attacks.

"The United States stands with you as you defend your nation against terrorism," Obama said, calling the bombings "outrageous."

An early adversary of Assad, Turkey has firmly supported Syria's opposition, hosting its leaders and rebel commanders and retaliating against Syrian shells that have landed in its territory. Erdogan has been among the more vocal of the world leaders calling for a more hands-on U.S. effort, nudging Obama to act by declaring assertively that Syria has been delivering chemical weapons on hundreds of missiles ? a move that would violate Obama's "red line" against chemical weapons use. Obama has said there's evidence of chemical weapons use but is holding off until the circumstances can be more definitively determined.

Erdogan, too, faces a public divided about the best way to confront the seething conflict in its backyard. Some Turks have accused their leader of putting the nation's security at risk by backing the rebels, prompting anti-government protests and calls for Erdogan to resign. Meanwhile, the 200,000 or so Syrian refugees along the border have stoked resentment among residents in the ethnically mixed regions of southern Turkey.

In an attempt to show concrete action, the Obama administration added four Syrian government ministers, a Syrian TV station and its national airline to a U.S. terror blacklist Thursday, blocking their U.S. assets and prohibiting Americans from doing business with them.

But even that step included a pointed reminder that the U.S. can't be sure who will claim power if and when Assad is ousted. In a parallel move, the State Department blacklisted Muhammad al-Jawlani, the leader of the al-Qaida-linked rebel group fighting Assad's regime. The State Department dubbed al-Jawlani as a "global terrorist" and said he aims to create an Islamist state in Syria.

Google outs new Maps and Location APIs, brings geofencing and low power location services

Maps is one of the most useful features in Android, and today at Google I/O 2013, Mountain View announced a trio of new location services APIs to help devs to better leverage that strength. Fused Location Provider is the first, and it brings faster, more accurate location signals and delivers a low-power location mode that sips less than 1 percent of your battery while in use. Next is Geofencing, which will allow devs to set up to 100 location-based triggers for app events. The third API is called Activity Recognition, which uses accelerometer data and machine learning to figure out when you're walking, cycling or driving.

PFT: Patriots cut lineman after diabetes diagnosis

kyle-loveGetty Images

It?s becoming more clear that the New England Patriots cut defensive lineman Kyle Love for one reason.? He has Type-2 diabetes.

And while Love could, in theory, pursue legal claims against the team under the federal Americans with Disabilities Act or the Massachusetts equivalent, agent Richard Kopelman tells PFT that Love?s current focus is on getting healthy and finding a new NFL team.

Though Kopelman hasn?t completely ruled out an eventual lawsuit, Kopelman explained that Love has no hard feelings against the team for doing what it believed it needed to do.? From Love?s perspective, if the team doesn?t want him, then he needs to find one who does.

What his most recent team did, per Kopelman, was offer Love two alternatives:? retire for a year or be released.? Though the Pats were willing to waive any ability to recover a portion of his signing bonus if he opted to retired, Love wants to play football.

And so the choice became easy.? He picked the path that gives him a chance to play.

?We have every reason to believe Kyle is going to be well enough to play this year,? Kopelman said.? ?We?d rather be in position of having a chance to play this year versus not having a chance to play this year.?

The period for claiming Love?s contract on waivers expires at 4:00 p.m. ET.? If he?s not claimed, Love becomes a free agent.

Kopelman also explained the communications that resulted in Love?s release.? From the moment the team?s doctors made the diagnosis, the team adopted the ?retire or be released? stance.? Kopelman told the Patriots that ?it?s far too early to make a decision as to whether [Love] can perform his job in September, or even July,? and that ?all indications are that Kyle should be fine in a couple of weeks.?

Still, the Patriots ?reiterated it?s a medical issue and they don?t want to take a chance of Kyle not being healthy.?

While Kopelman has managed to take the high road, someone needs to point out that the Patriots are joyriding on the low one.? Jettisoning an employee who has a disease simply because the team fears that the disease could affect future performance is wrongheaded, unfair, and ultimately illegal.

It sends a bad message to mid-level managers in other industries who spend more time in the sports pages than the business section.? ?It just seems wrong,? one of my family members who has been living with diabetes for years said in an unsolicited text message that buzzed through while I was typing this.? ?It upsets me and confuses me and makes me wonder what other kind of discrimination is out there for someone like me.?

That?s a fair concern.? People with diabetes lead normal lives.? And so at a time when the biggest talking point in the NFL relates to whether a team will accept a gay player, how can any NFL team in good conscience jettison a player due to a medical condition that has no relevance to his ability to perform his job?

Even if Love never takes action, someone should ? either at the league office or in the Patriots? front office.

Marco Rubio Favors Immigration Tracking System

* Senator Hatch aims to ease hiring of foreigners
* Senate panel closes loopholes in student visa program
* House Republicans campaign to kill Senate immigration bill (Adds details on student visas)
By Caren Bohan and Rachelle Younglai
WASHINGTON, May 14 (Reuters) - Republican U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, who is considered crucial to the passage of an immigration law overhaul, on Tuesday vowed to fight for a biometric system that would track foreigners entering and exiting the country after a Senate panel rejected the idea.
Rubio and seven other Republican and Democratic senators, known as the "gang of eight," have crafted a sweeping bill that would revamp the immigration system, increase work visas and put millions of illegal immigrants on a path to citizenship.
In its second day of examining the legislation, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted against the Republican amendment that would have made it easier for the government to track illegal immigrants and other foreigners who have overstayed their visas.
The amendment would have required a biometric system at every point of entry in the United States before illegal immigrants would be eligible for permanent residency or a green card.
The biometric system is estimated to cost about $25 billion and uses technology such as iris scans and fingerprinting to identify people.
Citing the price tag and saying it would delay citizenship under the program, two of the Republicans who helped craft the bill sided with Democrats to defeat the amendment 12-6. The biometric system idea could potentially deter Democrats from voting for the entire bill if it delays illegal immigrants from becoming citizens.
In an effort to keep the legislation intact, the bipartisan gang of eight senators agreed to work together to block amendments that could kill the bill.
But Rubio's office said he was disappointed by the vote and would fight to add biometrics to the country's exit system when the bill is considered by the full Senate later this year.
"Having an exit system that utilizes biometric information will help make sure that future visitors to the United States leave when they are supposed to," his spokesman said.
Immigration reform advocates hope Rubio's popularity with conservatives will help sell the bill to his party.
The committee has already succeeded in rejecting other Republican attempts to beef up border security in ways that go beyond the bill and could jeopardize the path to citizenship. So far, the panel has considered around 60 of the 300 amendments introduced.

STUDENT VISAS
In response to the Boston marathon bombings and September 2011 attacks, the committee approved two Republican amendments to close loopholes in the student visa program.
One amendment would require data from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System to be transferred to customs and border patrol officers.
In Boston, one of the bombing suspect's friends who allegedly helped remove evidence was allowed to re-enter the United States even though his student visa had expired.
The other amendment would prohibit flight schools from offering student visas unless the school was accredited by the federal government. Two of the 9/11 hijackers had obtained student visas to attend flight schools, according to lawmakers.
HIGH SKILL WORKERS
Senators had been due on Tuesday to consider changes to work visa programs and were under pressure from businesses to make it easier to recruit highly skilled workers from other countries and bring in more foreigners to do manual labor.
But debate on those issue was postponed.
High-tech companies and other businesses are pushing for changes to provisions that would require firms to seek American applicants first for any job and that would prohibit the displacement of U.S. workers.
The companies are backing a series of amendments by Republican Utah Senator Orrin Hatch concerning the skilled worker visa program known as H-1B.
The AFL-CIO labor organization opposes the amendments, saying they would be unfair to American workers.
Hatch, whose support is important because it would increase pressure on the Republican-led House to work on legislation, said he has had conversations with the Senate gang of eight and has made clear the H-1B visa issue may be pivotal to his vote.
"I think they're taking me seriously. Let's put it that way," Hatch said of the Senate gang. "And I hope they do because if they don't, I'm not going to support this bill."
Andrea Zuniga DiBitetto, legislative representative at the AFL-CIO, said she was "troubled" that Hatch would suggest that changes to the H-1B visa program might be the price of his vote.
"This bill is already balanced," DiBitetto said. "If anything, it's already skewed a little bit too much to the employer."
It is unclear whether the committee will consider Hatch's amendments when it meets on Thursday. The gang of eight was discussing them Tuesday night and his proposals could be considered as a larger package of amendments when the full Senate examines the bill.
At the end of the day-long session, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy said he hoped to get through many issues by week's end and threatened a Saturday meeting if work moves too slowly.
As the committee debated changes to the nearly 900-page bill, a group of conservative Republicans in the House of Representatives vowed to "tear up" and defeat that bill if it reaches their chamber.
They derided the Senate legislation as little more than "amnesty" for those who have come to the United States illegally or overstayed their visas. If enacted, they said it would cost U.S. taxpayers trillions of dollars.
Representative Steve King of Iowa told reporters that House conservatives were launching a public relations campaign consisting of floor speeches, opinion articles and other actions to "get the message out that there's another viewpoint here. It's not the one that's being stampeded in the Senate and may be stampeded in the House."
Representative Steve Stockman of Texas, referring to the eight senators who wrote the Senate's immigration bill, said, "They have a gang of eight. We're going to have a gang of millions" who, Stockman said, "will rise up against" the bill.
Instead of comprehensive immigration reform, these House conservatives want new steps to secure the southwestern U.S. border against illegal crossings before considering other changes to immigration law. (Reporting by Caren Bohan, Rachelle Younglai and Richard Cowan; Editing by Vicki Allen, Andrew Hay and Cynthia Osterman)

When green means danger: A stunning new species of palm-pitviper from Honduras

May 14, 2013 ? A new species of green palm-pitviper of the genus Bothriechis is described from a seriously threatened cloud forest reserve in northern Honduras. Because of similarity in color pattern and scalation, the new species (Bothriechis guifarroi) was previously confused with other Honduran palm pitvipers. Genetic analysis revealed that the closest relatives of the new species are actually found over 600 km to the south, in the mountains of Costa Rica.

The study was published in the open access journal Zookeys.

The gorgeous new species was discovered by scientists during two expeditions in 2010 aimed at studying the fauna of Texiguat Wildlife Refuge, one of the most endemism-rich and diverse highland forests in Mesoamerica. This beautiful, but highly toxic, snake represents the 15th endemic species occurring in the region. Texiguat Wildlife Refuge was created in 1987 to protect populations of wildlife such as the famous but elusive jaguar and Central America tapir, as well as howler and white-faced monkeys, sloths, and a variety of endemic amphibians, reptiles, and plants.

To draw attention to the dedication and sacrifice of many grassroots conservationists in Honduras and Central America, the new species was named in honor of Mario Guifarro of Olancho. Guifarro was a former hunter and gold miner who became an outspoken conservationist when he saw the vast rainforests of eastern Honduras being destroyed and converted to cattle ranches. After years of threats and multiple attempts on his life, Guifarro was ambushed and murdered on 15 September 2007 while on a mission to delimit a biosphere reserve for the indigenous Tawahka.

The lead author of the study Dr Josiah Townsend, Department of Biology, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, comments on the importance of the discovery and conservation status of the new species: "The description of Bothriechis guifarroi has important implications for Central American biogeography as well as conservation. We recommend that B. guifarroi be immediately classified as Critically Endangered due to its limited known area of occurrence and the potential for anthropogenic damage to its habitat. We also consider that this species warrants immediate consideration for protection under CITES, given its striking appearance and high potential for exploitation in the pet trade."

iTunes' second act

by Jason Gilbert | Yahoo Tech

?There are no second acts in American life,? F. Scott Fitzgerald once (sort of) mused. But what about in American software?

Over the past few weeks, we have gotten a glimpse at what may be the much-loathed iTunes? new, more appealing identity: a destination for popular bands to stream their albums for free in the days and weeks leading up to their in-store release dates.

Daft Punk, Justin Timberlake and David Bowie have all previewed their new LPs in full on iTunes, and swarms of fans are dusting off Apple?s musty old software for a free first listen. Remarkably, iTunes is now consistently gaining mentions in articles in which the primary focus is not on the lackluster quality of its once-groundbreaking media program.

For all of Apple?s wizardry over the past decade, it would be one of the company?s most miraculous acts if it could re-train PC owners to willingly and happily open up the horrendous flotilla of bloated computer garbage that is iTunes. Many of us have spent a little over a decade building up an aversion to iTunes, suffering through sputters and crashes and restarts and power-downs before we switched to more lightweight, efficient programs. If Adobe Flash is the refrigerator of computer software, then iTunes was always the freezer: I associate iTunes not with downloading music, or with library management, but with the spinning rainbow wheel that appears before I am forced to CTRL+ALT+DEL my way back to a functional state.

And yet here I am in 2013, opening up iTunes with an eager grin on an almost weekly basis. In these late spring months, Apple has been aggressive and wildly successful in exclusively debuting the major summer releases. Daft Punk cracked a hole in the Internet on Monday afternoon by suddenly making ?Random Access Memories? available as a gratis stream on iTunes on Monday afternoon; other acts, in addition to Timberlake and Bowie who have unveiled long-awaited albums on iTunes include Vampire Weekend and The National.

The Early Album Santa has been a role traditionally played by NPR and, more recently, hipster landing page Pitchfork.com. Now Apple is elbowing its way in, easily attracting the biggest acts in music due to its ubiquity and scope. I can think of no better way to get users that had been turned off through the years to revisit and poke around the recently revamped iTunes than to offer free, exclusive, eagerly-anticipated music that is available through no other legal channels.

And maybe, just maybe, you will come to discover that you don?t loathe iTunes quite as much as you did back when it was insta-crashing your candy-colored iMac.(And also, perhaps, you'll be so moved by the music that you'll purchase the album while you're there.)

It's a brilliant move by Apple, to offer an overwhelming, no-strings-attached good against its most maligned property. On the one hand, everyone hates iTunes. On the other, everyone loves music, especially new music by their favorite band. Unless you hold the staunchest of grudges against it, you will probably pinch your nose and begrudgingly fire up iTunes if it is the single outlet to listen to your favorite band?s new record for free.

Don?t get me wrong: iTunes will still exist primarily as an outlet to purchase digital copies of movies, TV shows, music and books. It?s not scuttling all of that wildly-profitable stuff to become a launchpad for Billboard megahits.

But given Apple?s monolithic status, iTunes could also transform itself into something much more essential for a younger set of music listeners who have abandoned it for Spotify or The Pirate Bay, and relegated iTunes to punchline-status. Were it to become a jukebox of pre-release albums, iTunes could once again be the place you visit to hear new music.

Now about that clunky redesign...
