Fans rejoice: J.J. Abrams to direct 'Star Wars'

Gus Ruelas / Reuters file

By Andrew Heavens , Reuters

Sci-fi filmmaker J.J. Abrams will direct "Star Wars: Episode VII," Walt Disney Co said after days of speculation, giving hope to many long-suffering fans who were disappointed by the last three installments in the iconic franchise.

The announcement was greeted with celebrations on online networks by the films' army of enthusiasts who have already watched Abrams rescue the aging "Star Trek" series with a high-grossing prequel in 2009.

Disney said late on Friday Abrams would work under the leadership of producer Kathleen Kennedy, the former president of Lucasfilm, and the script would be penned by Oscar-winning writer Michael Arndt.

"J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise," Kennedy said in a statement on starwars.com.

Fans were equally enthusiastic. "JJ Abrams to the rescue!!! Yes!! #starwarsVII," wrote @JonnyRadtke on Twitter.

"Great news about JJ Abrams directing Star Wars. Might just rescue the brand..." added @albrookshaw.

Rumors that Abrams, one of Hollywood's most successful directors and producers, would take stewardship of the films filled industry publications and online forums over the past week.

The 46-year-old made his name with TV shows "Alias" and "Lost" and earned his stripes as a director of effects-laden blockbusters with "Super 8," "Mission: Impossible?-- Ghost Protocol" and another widely-expected Star Trek film "Star Trek Into Darkness", due out later this year.

The Star Wars franchise, which was created by George Lucas' Lucasfilms Ltd, has grossed more than $4.4 billion?at the global box office since the first film was released in 1977, making it the third most successful movie property after the "Harry Potter" and "James Bond" series.

Star Wars characters such as Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker and the anti-hero Darth Vader have become a staple part of pop culture, along with the catch phrase "May the force be with you."

The Star Wars films were acquired by Disney after they bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion in October 2012. They announced then that three new installments would be made, starting in 2015.

Lucas, 68, gave Abrams his blessing on Starwars.com, saying the director was "an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn't be in better hands."

Abrams said his new role was "an absolute honor."

Disney had previously said Lucas would remain a creative consultant on the series.

Lucas himself said in October he had story treatments for Episodes 7, 8 and 9, which he would hand over to Kennedy, who assured him that she would adhere to his ideas.

French forces in Mali seize airport, bridge at rebel-held Gao

KONNA, Mali (Reuters) - French special forces in Mali with air support on Saturday seized the airport and a key bridge over the Niger River at the Islamist rebel-held stronghold of Gao as France accelerated its ground offensive against al Qaeda-allied fighters.

"The rebels have melted in to the local population. There is harassment. The operation is still under way. It is a bit complicated," a French officer in Mali, who asked not to be named, told Reuters, referring to the assault on Gao.

France's Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian announced the seizure of the airport and bridge at Gao, the largest town in Mali's Saharan north which was occupied last year by a coalition of Islamist groups including al Qaeda's North African wing AQIM.

France's defense ministry initially gave few details of the operation at Gao, but there were unconfirmed reports from Malian sources that it involved French paratroops.

The French officer said the attacking French forces were facing "harassment" attacks but no solid line of resistance.

The speed of the French action at Gao suggested French and Malian government troops intended to drive aggressively into the north of Mali in the next few days against other Islamist rebel-held towns, such as Timbuktu and Kidal.

For two weeks, French jets and helicopter gunships have been harrying the retreating Islamists, destroying their vehicles, command posts and weapons depots. The French action had already halted a sudden Islamist offensive launched in early January that had threatened Mali's southern capital Bamako.

A French defense ministry statement quoted minister Le Drian as saying that many of the Islamist fighters' vehicles and logistics bases had been destroyed.

News that the French forces were at Gao came as African states struggled to deploy a planned 6,000-strong African intervention force in Mali, known as AFISMA, under a U.N. mandate.

African Union leaders meeting at a summit in Addis Ababa were calling on the United Nations to provide emergency logistics and funding to allow the AFISMA force to deploy.

AU officials say AFISMA is severely hampered by logistical shortages and needs airlift support, ammunition, telecoms equipment, field hospitals, food and water. It also required training to operate in Mali's desert and arid mountains.

So far, only around 1,200 soldiers of the African force, to be mostly comprised of troops from neighboring West African nations, have arrived in Mali.

In contrast, France has 2,500 soldiers already on the ground in its former colony, taking the lead in the offensive against the Islamist groups.

The United States and Europe strongly back the U.N.-mandated Mali operation as a counterstrike against the threat of radical Islamist jihadists using the country's inhospitable Saharan north as a launch pad for international terrorist attacks.

But Washington and European governments, while providing airlift and intelligence support to the operation, are not planning to send in any combat troops.

High blood calcium levels may indicate ovarian cancer

Jan. 23, 2013 ? A new study from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is the first to report that high blood calcium levels might predict of ovarian cancer, the most fatal of the gynecologic cancers.

Lead author Gary G. Schwartz, Ph.D., a cancer epidemiologist at Wake Forest Baptist, and colleague, Halcyon G. Skinner, Ph.D., of the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center, examined associations between blood calcium and ovarian cancer in two national population-based groups. They found that women who were later diagnosed with ovarian cancer and women who later died of ovarian cancer had higher levels of calcium in blood than women who did not before their cancer diagnosis.

Schwartz, who is well-known for his epidemiologic research in prostate cancer, said the idea for this study came about because of published research from his group which showed that men whose calcium levels were higher than normal have an increased risk of fatal prostate cancer. That led him to wonder if a similar relationship were true of ovarian cancer.

"One approach to cancer biomarker discovery is to identify a factor that is differentially expressed in individuals with and without cancer and to examine that factor's ability to detect cancer in an independent sample of individuals," Schwartz said. "Everyone's got calcium and the body regulates it very tightly," Skinner added. "We know that some rare forms of ovarian cancer are associated with very high calcium, so it's worth considering whether more common ovarian cancers are associated with moderately high calcium."

The idea is plausible, Schwartz explained, because many ovarian cancers express increased levels of a protein, parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTRHrP), which is known to raise calcium levels in blood in many other cancers.

Ovarian cancer has a high fatality rate because it is hard to detect and by the time symptoms arise, the cancer is usually advanced. Schwartz said early diagnosis might be accomplished through the use of a calcium biomarker, but cautions that more research is needed to confirm these results. "We found the link between serum calcium and ovarian cancer; we confirmed it, and even though the study is small, we're reporting it because it's a very simple thing in theory to test."

Editor gets 10 years in jail for Thai royal insult

BANGKOK (AP) ? A prominent Thai labor rights activist and magazine editor was sentenced to a decade in prison Wednesday for violating much-debated laws designed to protect Thailand's royal family.

The verdict came despite repeated calls by rights groups to free Somyot Pruksakasemsuk, who has been jailed since 2011. It also underscored the harsh nature of Thailand's lese majeste laws, which have been criticized as a violation of free speech.

The articles in question were published under pseudonyms in Somyot's now-defunct Voice of Taksin magazine, which he launched in 2009 to compile political news and anti-establishment articles from writers and contributors.

Judges found both articles in question contained content that defamed the royal family and argued that Somyot, as a veteran editor, knew that and chose to print the stories anyway. The court handed down two five-year jail terms ? one for each story.

Somyot said he would appeal the verdict but would not seek a royal pardon.

Although Somyot's articles were published in 2010, he was only arrested the following year after launching a petition drive to revoke Article 112 of the nation's criminal code, which mandates three to 15 years in jail for "whoever defames, insults or threatens the king, the queen, the heir to the throne or the regent."

"The courts seem to have adopted the role of chief protector of the monarchy at the expense of free expression rights," Brad Adams, Asia director of Human Rights Watch, said in a statement. "The court's ruling appears to be more about Somyot's strong support for amending the lese majeste law than about any harm incurred by the monarchy."

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? The latest black eye for college sports belongs to the NCAA.

In an embarrassing blow to its watchdog image, the NCAA said Wednesday its enforcement staff had botched the high-profile investigation of the University of Miami by improperly conducting at least two depositions while working with an attorney for disgraced booster Nevin Shapiro. Miami has been under investigation since the convicted Ponzi scheme mastermind said he had provided improper benefits to Hurricanes recruits.

President Mark Emmert said he was disappointed and angry with the misstep, acknowledging he had not seen anything like this since taking the NCAA job 2 1/2 years ago. He said some "people" involved in this case were no longer working for the NCAA, though he declined to say who they were or whether they had been fired.

He said none of the evidence collected improperly would be used against Miami and that the long-awaited notice of allegations would be delayed until after an external review is completed in approximately two weeks.

It was an ugly stumble for the NCAA, coming less than a week after its annual convention resulted in another round of reforms intended to firm up recruiting rules and other guidelines. And it comes as the organization faces more than a half-dozen lawsuits that could reshape how it does business, including one challenging the $60 million in penalties levied against Penn State for the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

"Of course it hurts, any nick to a public perception that's not favorable to begin with is a problem," said Jo Potuto, former chairwoman of the NCAA infractions committee and a constitutional law professor at Nebraska. "The public perception has never been really favorable to the process or the infractions committee and so this is another hit."

Emmert tried to reassure schools that the principle of playing by the rules extends into NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis.

"We can't just say it, we've got to do it," Emmert said. "While I have great confidence in the vast majority of cases, when you have something as candidly dramatic as this, you can't just offer words, you have to demonstrate that you're getting this right. The reason I wanted to get this out is to make sure that this is right. We want to hold ourselves to the same standards we hold others to."

What happens next is anybody's guess.

The external review, which will be conducted by former Justice Department official Kenneth L. Wainstein, a Washington attorney perhaps best known in sports for representing Gilbert Arenas after he brought guns to the Wizards locker room and confronted a teammate.

Wainstein will focus on Miami's case, but he will have the authority to investigate the NCAA's actions in additional cases, too.

The potential list could include the suit brought by former Southern California assistant football coach Todd McNair, who claims the NCAA was "malicious" in its investigation into his role in the benefits scandal surrounding Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Frederick Shaller has already said he was convinced the actions of NCAA investigators were "over the top."

Wainstein also could look into the UCLA case involving freshman Shabazz Muhammad. In December, The Los Angeles Times reported that NCAA investigator Abigail Grantstein had been fired after her boyfriend was allegedly overheard discussing the case on an airplane. The NCAA has not confirmed the firing. The outside review could have potential ramifications, too, in a lawsuit brought by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett in the Penn State case.

This is not unfamiliar ground for the NCAA, and it could be that Emmert fears a lawsuit from Miami no matter how the investigation turns out. Former Washington football coach Rick Neuheisel won a $4.5 million settlement from the NCAA and university in 2005, saying he was wrongly fired for gambling in an NCAA basketball pool and failing to be forthright about it with NCAA investigators. Among other accusations, Neuheisel's attorney said the NCAA failed to provide Neuheisel's legal team with an updated version of its bylaws during discovery.

In this case, Emmert concluded something was wrong in the Miami case last fall when bills for an outside attorney showed up on an expense list, a hiring normally approved by the NCAA's general counsel. Emmert said it was not, and that's what initially caught the attention of those inside the Indy headquarters. He also said the person who had hired the lawyer was no longer working at the NCAA, making it more difficult to get information.

The fallout could lead to additional personnel moves, too, Emmert said.

Miami President Donna Shalala said she was "frustrated, disappointed and concerned" that the NCAA may have compromised the investigation. Potuto said she was surprised, describing the enforcement staff she dealt with as "open-minded" to investigations.

"I don't know about a rogue one or two people, but it is not at all representative of my experience with the enforcement staff people that I dealt with over the years," Potuto said. "Generally we found them (the enforcement staff) to be exceedingly fair to the point that we sometimes thought it impeded forceful investigations."

Just last week, Emmert told The Associated Press he was pleased that the number of salacious and high-profile cases that dominated 2011 -- a list that included the football programs at Miami, Ohio State and Penn State -- had dissipated, though he was cautious about another big scandal popping. Within days, the hoax about Manti Te'o's girlfriend broke, and Emmert was briefing two NCAA committees on the Miami case.

"The NCAA Executive Committee expects the enforcement program to operate within approved procedures and with the highest integrity," said Lou Anna K. Simon, the NCAA's executive committee chair and Michigan State president. "Although we are deeply disappointed in this turn of events, we strongly support the actions President Emmert is taking to address the problem."

What Emmert wants now is answers about how this "severe issue of improper conduct."

"My concern is that the policies and procedures are consistent with our values," Emmert said. "Whether it produces good information or no information, there's no way to cut corners on this. It's a very difficult task, but you don't do things inappropriately."

Johnny's Physical Therapy Success Story

The bicycle program at Gospel Baptist Church in Greensboro, North Carolina

A few of the bicycles painted and repaired by Johnny

Johnny is no stranger to hard work or physical labor. He spent four years as an airplane mechanic in the Navy,?stationed on the USS Independence. After that, he owned his own business, repairing and rebuilding printing equipment. Since retiring, Johnny has worked for his church, maintaining the building.?Through his church, Johnny also manages a?program to paint, repair and distribute bicycles to underprivileged kids.?Johnny explains, ?A couple of years ago, my wife came home from a yard sale with a kid?s bike. She said, ?Fix this up, and maybe we can find a kid to who needs it.? Before I knew it, I had to pull my car out of the garage to have room to fit all of the bikes in there.?

Johnny takes pride in painting and repairing bikes so that they are ?like new? when they are given away. ?Over the past two years, Johnny has helped his church give over 50 bikes to underprivileged kids in Guilford County, Rockingham County, and surrounding areas. ?Johnny says, ?We give a helmet with every bike, and we ask the parents first.?

Meanwhile, over the past few years, Johnny?s ability to handle his daily activities became more and more limited by his knee, due to a combination of arthritis, bone spurs, and an old injury. He had to stop taking walks with a friend. Going from sitting to standing became difficult. Just standing became painful. ?He could no longer handle the stairs at the church.

Johnny put off the knee replacement surgery for as long as possible. He walked with a cane, wore a knee brace, and had cortizone shots.?But when managing the bicycle program became hard, the decision to finally have the knee replacement surgery became easy.

After surgery, Johnny received physical therapy through a local home health agency.?He was already walking without a cane when he began?outpatient physical therapy, but he still had a long journey ahead of him. ?He says, ?When I first sat down on the exercise bike, I thought I would never make a revolution, but it got easier.?

Staff and Patient at TheraSport Physical Therapy in Summerfield, North Carolina

Johnny with the staff at TheraSport Physical Therapy

Johnny chose to receive outpatient physical therapy at TheraSport Physical Therapy?in Summerfield, North Carolina because it was convenient to his home. Johnny says, ?From the first time I came, the staff was genuinely interested in helping me get better. And I have!?

Johnny now walks with no assistive device, is able to manage stairs, bend his leg to cross his legs, stand in church? and work on bicycles!

After meeting his goals and being discharged from physical therapy, Johnny joined the Alumni Program so that he could continue his routine in a safe environment. He enjoys the Alumni Program because, as he says, ?Everyone here has something in common. It?s like going to the gym with a friend? You?ll get to talking, and you?ll go a lot farther without even realizing it.?

Flu season fuels debate over paid sick time laws

An unusually early and vigorous flu season is drawing attention to the cause that has both scored victories and hit roadblocks in recent years: mandatory paid sick leave. (AP Photo/Mary Altaffer)

(AP) ? Sniffling, groggy and afraid she had caught the flu, Diana Zavala dragged herself in to work anyway for a day she felt she couldn't afford to miss.

A school speech therapist who works as an independent contractor, she doesn't have paid sick days. So the mother of two reported to work and hoped for the best ? and was aching, shivering and coughing by the end of the day. She stayed home the next day, then loaded up on medicine and returned to work.

"It's a balancing act" between physical health and financial well-being, she said.

An unusually early and vigorous flu season is drawing attention to a cause that has scored victories but also hit roadblocks in recent years: mandatory paid sick leave for the 40 percent of American private-sector workers ? more than 40 million people ? who don't have it.

Supporters and opponents are particularly watching New York City, where lawmakers are weighing a sick leave proposal amid a competitive mayoral race.

Pointing to a flu outbreak that the governor has called a public health emergency, dozens of doctors, nurses, lawmakers and activists ? some in surgical masks ? rallied Friday on the City Hall steps to call for passage of the measure, which has awaited a City Council vote for nearly three years. Two likely mayoral contenders have also pressed the point.

The flu spike is making people more aware of the argument for sick pay, said Ellen Bravo, executive director of Family Values at Work, which promotes paid sick time initiatives around the country. "There's people who say, 'OK, I get it ? you don't want your server coughing on your food,'" she said.

Advocates have cast paid sick time as both a workforce issue akin to parental leave and "living wage" laws, and a public health priority.

But to some business owners, paid sick leave is an impractical and unfair burden for small operations. Critics also say the timing is bad, given the choppy economy and the hardships inflicted by Superstorm Sandy.

Michael Sinesky, an owner of seven bars and restaurants around the city, was against the sick time proposal before Sandy. And after the storm shut down four of his restaurants for days or weeks, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars that his insurers have yet to pay, "we're in survival mode."

"We're at the point, right now, where we cannot afford additional social initiatives," said Sinesky, whose roughly 500 employees switch shifts if they can't work, an arrangement that some restaurateurs say benefits workers because paid sick time wouldn't include tips.

Employees without sick days are more likely to go to work with a contagious illness, send an ill child to school or day care and use hospital emergency rooms for care, according to a 2010 survey by the University of Chicago's National Opinion Research Center. A 2011 study in the American Journal of Public Health estimated that a lack of sick time helped spread 5 million cases of flu-like illness during the 2009 swine flu outbreak.

To be sure, many employees entitled to sick time go to work ill anyway, out of dedication or at least a desire to project it. But the work-through-it ethic is shifting somewhat amid growing awareness about spreading sickness.

"Right now, where companies' incentives lie is butting right up against this concern over people coming into the workplace, infecting others and bringing productivity of a whole company down," said John A. Challenger, CEO of employer consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Paid sick day requirements are often popular in polls, but only four places have them: San Francisco, Seattle, Washington, D.C., and the state of Connecticut. The specific provisions vary.

Milwaukee voters approved a sick time requirement in 2008, but the state Legislature passed a law blocking it. Philadelphia's mayor vetoed a sick leave measure in 2011; lawmakers have since instituted a sick time requirement for businesses with city contracts. Voters rejected a paid sick day measure in Denver in 2011.

In New York, City Councilwoman Gale Brewer's proposal would require up to five paid sick days a year at businesses with at least five employees. It wouldn't include independent contractors, such as Zavala, who supports the idea nonetheless.

The idea boasts such supporters as feminist Gloria Steinem and "Sex and the City" actress Cynthia Nixon, as well as a majority of City Council members and a coalition of unions, women's groups and public health advocates. But it also faces influential opponents, including business groups, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who has virtually complete control over what matters come to a vote.

Quinn, who is expected to run for mayor, said she considers paid sick leave a worthy goal but doesn't think it would be wise to implement it in a sluggish economy. Two of her likely opponents, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and Comptroller John Liu, have reiterated calls for paid sick leave in light of the flu season.

While the debate plays out, Emilio Palaguachi is recovering from the flu and looking for a job. The father of four was abruptly fired without explanation earlier this month from his job at a deli after taking a day off to go to a doctor, he said. His former employer couldn't be reached by telephone.

"I needed work," Palaguachi said after Friday's City Hall rally, but "I needed to see the doctor because I'm sick."

Resolution 2013: Fitness with Zsuzsi Bork

Paying $100+ a month to run in place on a treadmill, doing the same repetitive motion in a musty gym for an hour and change day in and day out, is my idea of hell. It?s just too much like The Matrix for my taste. But, massage therapist and yoga instructor Zsuzsi Bork has a better way to achieve fitness for people like me. Here?s what Zsuzsi had to say about incorporating yoga and massage into a holistic fitness routine for 2013:

Yoga1

ZB: The first time I stepped onto a yoga mat was March of 2010.? I quickly realized that I wanted to become a yoga instructor, both to further my own practice and to share my enthusiasm with others.? I started the teacher training process in February of 2011 and taught my first class in May of that year.

The Health Benefits of Yoga
ZB: There are so many health benefits!? Not just with strength and flexibility, but also with your posture, breath, and an overall healthy mind.? I have found that it calms so much anxiety and improves concentration.

I was able to see the health benefits quickly in my own body after I started practicing yoga.? I had gained weight, I couldn?t get halfway to reaching my toes, and I just didn?t feel good about myself.? Once I became consistent with my yoga practice, there was a dramatic change.? I lost over 50 lbs., my flexibility increased, and I felt amazing.? Not only did it help me physically, but in so many other areas of my life.

How to Begin/Improve Yoga Practice
ZB: Whether just beginning or improving, quiet that voice in your head that tells you that you are not good enough. It takes much more strength to learn when it is time to rest, instead of feeling you have to muscle your way through it. No matter how far you get in your yoga practice, there is always room for learning.

Yoga2

The Health Benefits of Massage Therapy
ZB: The same as yoga, there can be many benefits to massage, including:

* Managing anxiety & depression
* Better range of motion
* Reducing pain
* Improving sleep
* Helping with cramps & PMS
* Relieving side effects of cancer treatment
* Increased energy
* Boosts immunity
* Improved digestion

Massage1

Yoga and Massage: Synergistic Effects
ZB: Both yoga and massage are good for your health and well-being. They share a number of benefits and work in tandem to increase flexibility, reduce pain, and reduce stress. Yoga and massage are complimentary practices that treat the body holistically.

On Incorporating Fun
ZB: To wind down from all my activities, I like to meet up with some of my closest friends at the Town House Bar, either to play darts, shoot some pool, or even to shake it on the dance floor!

Pool

On Incorporating Rest
ZB: I think everyone needs a day of lounging around the house! A day to take time for yourself for anything that you would like.

Lounge1

Junk Boat Travels: River Cruising

I've had a few people ask me about European river cruises so I thought I would capture some of my thoughts on them. First of all, I love them. I never thought I would get DH on one, however, as he did not like the idea of being on the water.
We went to Egypt in 2007 and it included a three day Nile cruise and he was hooked. In 2009 we took a trip to China which had a three day Yangtze cruise which went through the 12 Gorge Dam. He realized then that the ships do not rock and it was a great way to get around.

We have done the?Gate 1 Moscow to St.Petersburg?in May 2011. We added several days in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Then we took the Gate 1?Danube river cruise from Budapest to Prague?in May 2012 where we added Copenhagen as our first stop and then arranged our own flight to Budapest.
August 2012 saw us on?on the Seine from Paris to Normandy and back.
October 2012 we took Gate 1?along the Rhine from Amsterdam to Basel.?We added some days in Amsterdam and Basel.

The cruise companies can arrange your optional hotel extensions if you wish. We have used them and also booked them on our own. It's your choice.

Another idea is to book back to back river cruises since you are already in Europe. We saw a lot of people do this when in Paris, they took the cruise to Normandy and back and then transferred to another cruise to the south of France. An excellent idea if you have the time.

You can also book your optional tours along the cruise route ahead of time, and we did do that the first time. However, I suggest you wait until you're on board as you will get a better idea of the tour and its duration. We booked ahead of time in Prague for a trip on our last day and then decided not to take it when we learned it involved a three bus trip there and back. We were enjoying Prague so much that we didn't want to waste six hours on a bus when we could be wandering on our own. So we chose to forfeit the cost.

River ships are typically about 300' - 400' in length and 35' - 40' in width. They have three or four decks for accommodation, lounges, bars, restaurants, and other public areas. The ships are well appointed and comfortable with the exception of the Russian ships which are older and of a lower quality than the European ships.

Don't select cabins on the bottom deck.? Unlike a regular full sized ocean liner, where even the lowest cabins are still quite a way up from the waterline, your eye level view will be close to the waterline of the ship, limiting your views. ?
?I?definitely?recommend upgrading your cabin to ensure you have a French balcony that you will be able to open and watch the towns go by.?

Always check on the deck plan??to see what is above, below, and alongside your cabin.? Avoid cabins below lounges, dance floors, etc, and avoid cabins next to bulkhead doors and with public spaces on the other side. We learned this the hard way when our cabin was located on the same floor as the dining room and the hordes would line up down the hall waiting for the dining room to open. However this was on the MS Sound of Music which had a large group of passengers who were like the hungry masses who had never eaten. I have not seen this on any other cruise ship.

Also the other ships have had their dining rooms and bars located at one end of the ship on top of each other.

MS Avalon Creativity Paris to Normandy August 2012

Our cabin aboard the MS Amadeus Princess October 2012

The ships usually have between 60 and 85 cabins, making total passenger capacity somewhere between 120 and 175.

This is an ideal size as the ship itself is large enough to be interesting and not to feel confining. Forgot something? It's not a big deal to go back to your cabin to get it.
River cruising is the best way to travel. Your ship is small enough (usually about 140 passengers) to dock right in town so you can either walk and visit on your own or else take an optional tour. The food is great with breakfast and lunch typically buffets and then sit down dinners.

Depending on the cruise itinerary you can often board your ship as scheduled and then use it as a hotel ?as the ship stays moored for two or three days in places like Amsterdam, Paris, Budapest, Moscow or St. Petersburg. This means you can go off on your own to sightsee or eat in those cities or else do the optional tours offered and eat your meals on board.

You move at slow speeds and typically sail at night while you are dining or sleeping. It is fun to awake in the morning and be in a new town or city.

Cruises will include some cruising during the day, both to meet the need to be certain places at certain times, and also to allow you to enjoy some daytime sightseeing. They are also dependent on the timing for locks. One of the best daytime sails we did was along the Rhine even if it was raining!

You sail at typically 12 - 15 mph cruising speed which provides a feeling of relaxed travel.

Europe is very compact - you only have short distances to travel between towns (and even between countries).?

Passengers are older usually 50+ who love to travel. There is a large mixture of couples, singles, women travelling together. Due to the small number of passengers it is easy
?easy to get to know other passengers if you wish. We still stay in contact with people we have met.

A good way to determine if a river cruise is too expensive is to consider what you would pay traveling around Europe on your own or on a bus tour (which as I mentioned I would never do).
Hotels are very expensive in Europe, even using $125 (sharing) for a night, meals at $50 assuming breakfast is included in the hotel rate, tours are at least $75 and then transportation on top of that makes river cruising a great choice.
On top of that you only have to unpack once and check in once!!! We all know what it is like packing and unpacking while touring around.
And then there's the quality of the food. If you are paying for each meal on your own you don't get the opportunity to try different things or you end up skimping to save some money. You are not likely to eat five or seven course meals on your own and stay within a reasonable budget. Most river cruises even include your beer and wine with meals.

On top of that you get your free entertainment in the evening. Now this is not top class entertainment but it can keep you busy as you sail at night. There is usually a crew talent show which can be amusing.?

You see much more from a river cruise boat than you do from a bus, train, or car, and you can be either enjoying the sights more comfortably, either in your cabin, in a lounge, in a dining room, or up on one of the open decks.

I certainly have no intentions of ever taking a bus tour where you have to be up at 7AM with your luggage to board yet another bus to another town.

Aboard the MS Avalon Creativity August 2012 along the Seine

While you sail during the day time the crew always provides some type of activities, generally involving food for your entertainment.

Afternoon tea aboard the MS Russ on the Volga May 2011

Plus, when you arrive at the various places you stop and visit, when you get off the boat, you're able to sightsee exactly the same as any other way of traveling. Well - not quite so exactly - you don't have to bother about packing your bags, checking out of the hotel, carrying your bags to your form of transport, traveling to the next place, getting to your hotel, checking in, carrying your own bags upstairs, and unpacking them again in your room!

As cruise passengers you get early quick entrance into attractions. This was a great bonus in France in August 2012 when everything was crowded?such as Versailles in Paris?or?Giverny to visit Monet's Gardens.

You can do as much or as little as you feel like. Some people enjoy just staying on board.

Happy Saturday! It has warmed up here to normal AZ winter weather temps and I am glad! You could tell I'm an AZ native when I wear two pairs of sweats and turn the house temp to 74 degrees all because we dipped to freezing temperatures this last week. I know I am a light weight and I wouldn't make it in a colder climate. It's good to see 60 plus degrees again! How are you enjoying your winter weather?

Chart shows temperatures for January inaugurals

FILE - This Jan. 20, 1961 black-and-white file photo showsPresident John F. Kennedy and Mrs. Kennedy walk outside the White House during inauguration ceremonies, just as the parade began. An 8-inch snowfall on the eve of John F. Kennedy's inauguration in 1961 left hundreds of cars marooned and thousands more abandoned. (AP) ? Consider it the first fact check of a Barack Obama campaign pledge for his second term: Will he, or Mother Nature, deliver on promised warmer Inauguration Day weather?

It's shaping up as a close call.

In September, while campaigning in Colorado, Obama was talking to a potential voter who mentioned he had been one of the hundreds of thousands of people outdoors at Obama's bone-chilling first inaugural in 2009, when the noontime temperature was 28 degrees. Obama promised: "This one is going to be warmer."

Scientifically, the president doesn't have control of day-to-day weather. While his policies can lessen or worsen future projected global warming on a large scale, they cannot do anything about Washington's daily temperature on Jan. 21.

Still, it's a promise that for a long time looked close to a sure thing. The history of local weather was on Obama's side.

On average, the normal high is 43 degrees and the normal low is 28, but that's just around dawn. There have been 19 traditional January inaugurations and only two were colder. Ronald Reagan's second in 1985 was a frigid 7 with subzero wind chills and John F. Kennedy's in 1961 was a snow-covered 22. Jimmy Carter's 1977 inauguration also was 28.

Then there was the general warming trend Washington had been stuck in. The last time the nation's capital stayed below freezing all day was Jan. 22, 2011. The city has gone a record 700-plus days since it had 2 inches or more of snow.

An Arctic cold front looks to be racing toward the mid-Atlantic, so it will be cooler than normal on Monday, but probably not cooler than 2009, said Nikole Listemaa, a senior forecaster at the National Weather Service office in Sterling, Va., that oversees forecasts for the capital area.

Look for highs around 40 degrees with noon temperatures in the mid- to upper 30s, Listemaa said Saturday. That would keep Obama's pledge.

There's also a 30 percent chance of light snow showers for Monday. But the Arctic cold front won't arrive until Monday night into Tuesday, Listemaa added.

Extreme cold on Inauguration Day, folklore says, can be a killer.

In 1841, newly elected president William Henry Harrison stood outside without a coat or hat as he spoke for an hour and 40 minutes. He caught a cold that day and it became pneumonia and he died one month after being sworn in.

Twelve years later, outgoing first lady Abigail Fillmore got sick from sitting outside on a cold wet platform as Franklin Pierce was inaugurated and she died of pneumonia at the end of the month. Doctors now know that pneumonia is caused by germs, but prolonged exposure to extreme cold weather may hurt the airways and make someone more susceptible to getting sick.

There's one thing Washington's history shows. Bad weather generally creates bad traffic jams.

Kennedy found that out in his 1961 inauguration when 8 inches of snow fell overnight and crippled the city for what at that time was Washington's worst traffic jam. Thousands of cars were abandoned in the snow.

Quinn will veto gaming bill - Capitol Fax.com

* As if there was ever any doubt, Gov. Pat Quinn will veto the gaming bill that was finally released last week from a parliamentary hold?

On Oct. 17, 2011, Quinn announced that if Cullerton ever did send him the 2011 bill, he would veto it. So the bill sat, until last week. At the end of the expiring General Assembly, Cullerton cleared off his desk and sent the measure to Quinn. And on Friday, Quinn spokeswoman Brooke Anderson assured us that the governor will follow through on his 2011 threat.

* Meanwhile, I?m not so sure this smoking ban explanation is correct?

According to a year-end report issued by the Illinois Gaming Board, [casino] revenue for the 2012 calendar year was $1.6 billion, which was up slightly from 2011, but down by about 38 percent from 2007.

Tom Swoik, director of the Illinois Casino Gaming Association, which represents the Metropolis casino, Harrah?s, said that the 2007 smoking ban and an economy that took a turn for the worst are two reasons for the dip.

?Once the economy starts improving, I think that casino revenues will pick up,? Swoik said. ?I think it will be a long time if ever that we get back to the 2007 figures because they?re not going to change the smoking ban.?

?All of the bordering states that have casinos do not have a smoking ban, so we lost about 20 percent in 2008, and we?ve lost an additional 18 or 19 percent on top of that since then just because of the economy,? Swoik added.

* It turns out, things are tough all over, despite casinos allowing smoking. For instance?

Revenues at Northwest Indiana?s five casinos dropped by $24.3 million in 2012, the second straight year of decline with the state of Indiana predicting more declines ahead.

The five Northwest Indiana casinos raked in $1.11 billion total in 2012, as compared to $1.13 billion in 2011, for a 2.1 percent drop overall, according to a tally by The Times of Indiana Gaming Commission monthly revenue reports. That drop compares with a 5.5 percent drop statewide in 2011.

And?

All but one of the St. Louis area?s six casinos experienced revenue declines in December.

Pinnacle Entertainment?s River City Casino, in Lemay, received 3 percent more from gamblers last month than it did in December 2011. But that was the only growth among the area?s casinos, according to figures released Thursday by state regulators.

Winnings fell slightly at Lumi?re Place, Pinnacle?s other casino in the St. Louis market.

The biggest drop took place at Hollywood Casino, which changed hands late last year. Penn National Gaming paid Caesars Entertainment $610 million for the casino and adjoining hotel in Maryland Heights.

And?

Nevada gaming revenues took a nosedive in November.

Statewide, casinos collected $782.6 million from gamblers during the month, a drop of almost 11.1 percent compared with $880.1 million collected in November 2011.

On the Strip, gaming revenues fell 12.8 percent with casinos collecting $431.8 million from customers, compared with $495.2 million collected a year ago.

The Gaming Control Board released the November numbers this morning.

Clark County gaming revenues as a whole fell 13 percent as every reporting area showed year-over-year monthly declines. Casinos along the Boulder Strip reported a 26 percent decline in gaming revenues while revenues were off 24 percent in North Las Vegas.

Downtown Las Vegas gaming revenues declined 17.2 percent.

Flu prevention and treatment in Central Texas

by KVUE News

Updated today at 6:01 PM

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Separating fact from fiction, where does Austin and central Texas stand when it comes to flu cases, vaccinations, and treatment?

High levels of flu activity continue to be reported in Travis County.

20 to 30 people are coming to the emergency room daily at Scott & White Hospital in Round Rock.

Texas has been reporting high flu activity since October, and peak season does not begin until after later this month.

According to doctors at Scott and White, Tamiflu is available. However, Dr. Ross Tobleman, the medical director at the hosptial's emergency room, says not everyone benefits from Tamiflu, as it has to be taken 24 to 36 hours from the onset of symptoms.

He says there are people who benefit, but for most people it only gives a 12 to 24 hour reduction in the duration of your symptoms. There is no cure.

The doctor says there is still time for the flu shot, and that you cannot get the flu from getting the shot.

"The flu shot contains inactive and dead virus particles. So it doesn't even contain the live virus particle at all. So there is absolutely no way you can get the flu from getting the flu shot," said Tobleman.

He says you might feel achy or have a low grade temperature, but that is just your immune system responding.

Other preventative measures include getting pleny of rest and drinking fluids. And if you chose to go the holistic approach, the doctor recommends vitamin c, echinachea and zinc. But mostly he says, lots of rest and water.

Senate GOP leader optimistic about Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The United States should keep a residual force of about 10,000 in Afghanistan after combat forces leave at the end of 2014, the Senate Republican leader said Monday after a series of meetings with military leaders in the country.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, who led a congressional delegation to Afghanistan and Israel, expressed optimism about an 11-year war that now stands as the longest in American history, and the prospect of Afghans assuming a lead role in the fighting.

"My observation about Afghanistan at this point is this is the first time I've left there with a sense of optimism," he told reporters in a conference call. "I think there's a widely held view among the American military leaders there ? we met with Gen. (John) Allen ? that this has a very great potential for a happy ending after 2014, provided we have a residual force that we can provide for training."

The United States now has 66,000 troops in Afghanistan. The U.S. and its NATO allies agreed in November 2010 that they would withdraw all their combat troops by the end of 2014, but they haven't decided on the scope of future missions to contain al-Qaida and the size of a remaining force.

Obama administration officials gave the first clear signal last week that it might leave no troops in the country after December 2014. Administration officials in recent days have said they are considering a range of options for a residual U.S. troop presence of as few as 3,000 and as many as 15,000, with the number linked to a specific set of military-related missions like hunting down terrorists.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is believed to favor an option that would keep about 9,000 troops in the country.

McConnell said the military leaders were somewhat cautious about pushing for a specific number as the decision will be made by the White House. The Kentucky lawmaker, who made his seventh trip to Afghanistan, did make his own recommendation.

"I think we're going to need a minimum of about 10,000 troops to provide adequate training and counterterrorism in the post-2014 period and we anticipate there will be forces from other countries that will remain here beyond 2014 as well," McConnell said.

The number from the Senate GOP leader could influence other members of Congress as they weigh the continued American presence in Afghanistan amid increasing war-weariness from constituents.

A sticking point for President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who met last week, is whether any U.S. troops remaining after 2014 would be granted immunity from prosecution under Afghan law. Immunity is a U.S. demand that the Afghans have resisted, saying they want assurances on other things ? like authority over detainees ? first.

"There is a widely held view that the Afghan army is definitely coming up to speed," McConnell said at a stop in Aviano, Italy. "I'm optimistic that this country will be able to maintain itself after we're largely gone."

In a separate appearance, Afghan ambassador to Washington H.E. Eklil Hakimi said under security negotiations to flesh out what the two presidents decided last week, U.S. special operations troops could stay at their posts in the villages, with Afghan special operations forces leading the program to train local militiamen to fight the Taliban.

"Afghans will be in in the lead," he said.

His remarks to reporters Monday clarified Karzai's remarks Friday when he stated all foreign forces would leave Afghan villages in the spring.

He declined to say how many troops should remain, adding "it's up to experts and generals to decide."

Hakimi also predicted progress on reconciliation talks with the Taliban, aided by another release of Taliban prisoners by Pakistan. But this time, Afghan officials have asked Pakistan to let them know when, where and whom is being released.

"We are in talks to make sure to have a proper monitoring mechanism, and they should notify us and do things in a systematic manner," Hakimi said.

McConnell was joined on the congressional trip by four Republican senators ? John Barrasso of Wyoming, Jeff Flake of Arizona, Ted Cruz of Texas and Deb Fischer of Nebraska. Flake, Cruz and Fischer were just sworn in a week ago.

In Israel, they met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. McConnell said the threat from Iran tops Israel's list of concerns.

Aaron Swartz, 1986-2013: a computer hacker who is now a political martyr

By Virginia Heffernan

"Aaron Swartz's death is a loss for all humanity," Jacob Applebaum, a distinguished hacker, said by email to me today.

He was a "Web genius," wrote Lawrence Lessig, the Harvard Law School professor and director of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University.

But just after Swartz died, on Friday, Lessig had wondered about another epithet used to describe him. ?The question this government needs to answer is why it was so necessary that Swartz be labeled a 'felon.'"

Aaron Swartz was a hacker-activist and a committed liberator of information. Facing federal charges, a possible sentence of 35 years in prison and a $1 million fine, for downloading subscription-only academic papers with the intent to distribute them, Swartz hanged himself in his apartment in Brooklyn on Friday. He was 26.

Sample papers Swartz attempted to set free include "John Berryman: The Poetics of Martyrdom" and "Mapping the Niger, 1798-1832: Trust, Testimony and 'Ocular Demonstration' in the Late Enlightenment." On its own initiative, JSTOR, which hosts the academic papers and never pressed charges against Swartz, started offering limited free access to its archive just this week.

"Aaron has been depressed about his case/upcoming trial," Susan Swartz, Swartz's mother, posted on a hacker section of the Ycombinator Web site today. "But we had no idea what he was going through was this painful."Aaron Swartz (image via The Atlantic Wire)

If Swartz's death plunged his admirers and colleagues into deep mourning, it also activated their fury. Though his suicide had no doubt many causes, Swartz may have come as close as anyone in recent memory to dying for a political movement. Those over 40 will have to think back to counterculture martyrs of the early 60s to find a comparably galvanizing figure in the current circle of hacker-activisits. The prodigy developer, at 14, of RSS feeds, Swartz also agitated without cease?or compensation?for the free-culture movement.

Two years ago, in January, 2011, Swartz was arrested for, essentially, setting information free?as an animal-rights activist might liberate a zoo. In 2008, he had thrown open PACER, a subscription-only trove of federal judicial documents. And then he had downloaded the 4.8 million articles from JSTOR. Of course, thanks to the magic of electronic reproduction, the articles still exist on the JSTOR site.

Swartz was charged, then, with wire fraud, computer fraud, unlawfully obtaining information from a protected computer and damaging a protected computer.

"I don't fully understand the reasons that he took his own life," Applebaum, who worked with Swartz on security projects, told me. "If it has to do with the thought of nearly endless pain of prison for working toward an open culture, I empathize with the goals and certainly with the stress." (Applebaum was himself the subject of a federal investigation for his connection with Wikileaks.)

"Such a jackboot on one's throat creates atomized people, which contributes to deep despair and depression."

As Applebaum and Lessig eulogize their hero, it's time a wider audience appreciate his achievements. Applebaum cites especially Tor2Web, Swartz's security project, and his Guerrilla Open Access Manifesto. The Manifesto, which lays out Swartz's politics, should be required reading for anyone seeking to understand the open-culture movement.
