Welcome to the three hundred and twenty-fourth of my blog interviews with novelists, poets, short story authors, biographers, agents, publishers and more. Today?s is with historical and children?s author Connie Hannah. A list of interviewees (blogged and scheduled) can be found here. If you like what you read, please do go and investigate further.

Morgen: Hello, Connie. Please tell us something about yourself, where you are based, and how you came to be a writer.

Connie: Why is it that I always have something to say until someone asks me to tell them about myself?? Well, let?s see.? I am a married mom of ten-year-old twins.? I was born and raised in the South and many refer to me as a true Steel Magnolia.? My family and I live in a small suburb of Atlanta, Georgia and enjoy many things that a small town has to offer.

As far as writing goes, I cannot give you a definite answer on that one.? I have lived a very complicated, adventurous, and wide-open life and am still going strong.? Throughout the years, there has always been a nagging in my soul telling me to share my story with others.? So, about a year ago, I decided to write The Suitcase of Secrets.

Morgen: Creative writing snuck up on me too, one session of a college evening class and I was hooked. What genre do you generally write and have you considered other genres?

Connie: It appears that The Suitcase of Secrets is listed as fiction and historical fiction since it is based on a true story.? I also have just finished writing Peter and The Purple Pill, which is a children?s book and the illustrations are being completed as we speak.

Morgen: What is your favourite / least favourite aspect of your writing?? Has anything surprise you?

Connie: My favorite aspect of writing is that, for me, it has been a very healing experience.? I was very hesitant about sharing such a painful, raw, and honest parts of my past.? However, since putting it all out there in print, the responses and reviews have been awesome.? The least favorite aspect of my writing is the editing process.? It seemed like it was never going to be done and I am a very impatient person.

The biggest surprise for me in regards to my book is that I am the one who actually wrote the words on the pages.? Sometimes I will pick up the book and just turn to a random page.? As I read, I am amazed that these words came from me!

Morgen: Isn?t that great. I quite often go back to old writing (even just a month or two) and am pleased with what I see (or not so pleased at others ). Is there a word, phrase or quote that you like?

Connie: I love the old Southern saying ?Why do Southern Women wear white gloves?? It is to hide their brass knuckles.?? All I can say is so true and is this field you must be tough.

Morgen: You do, but you just have to remember that it?s one person?s opinion. I had a reviewer on Goodreads saying that one of my stories had to her off my writing for life, which is a shame from my point of view but I have others loving it and wanting more so definitely the rough with the smooth. What advice would you give aspiring writers?

Connie: I know this has been said time and time again, but do not give up on your dream.? If I gave in every time that someone told me that writing and marketing a book on my own was just a ?pie in the sky? dream, the special words that I have penned would have never made it to a page.? Well, guess what, I am now eating the pie and it is good!!

Morgen: Isn?t it. I?m only two weeks in on my new-found freedom but I?m looking forward to being able to crack on with the novels (still wading through outstanding emails at the moment!). Do you have an agent?? Do you think they?re are vital to an author?s success?

Connie: I do not have an agent.? I self-published The Suitcase of Secrets and I am working very hard to market it and get it out there.? As far as an agent goes, I think there are pros and cons to just about anything.? The major pro to having an agent is that they are marketing professional and can handle many of the day-to-day decisions that allows the author to spend their time writing.? The major con to having an agent is that they handle most of the day-to-day decisions and the writer is possibly not in the loop.? Either way, I am just thrilled that the book is finally published!

Morgen: Out of the two, although I love being self-published, it would be great to have someone on board so I could spend more time writing ? that?s what we are after all. How much of the marketing do you do for your published work or for yourself as a ?brand??

Connie: Well, Morgen, I am a one-woman show.? I currently do all my marketing since I am self-published.? I am linked to Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In, and have my own blog page: www.thesuitcaseofsecrets.blogspot.com.? I had a book signing in the town in which I live and appeared as a guest on ?Delicious Imperfections of Life? on March 13th of this year.? The book is also on Amazon and Lulu.com.? I think that I am off to a very good start.

Morgen: Anything live has got to be good? well done. Do you plot your stories or do you just get an idea and run with it?

Connie: I think a little of both.? The ideas just come to me and then I sit down and start to write.? Once I get my bearings straight, I will put together an outline so that I do not forget the premise of the book.

Morgen: What do you do when you are not writing?

Connie: I juggle lots of stuff and love it.? I take care of a home and kids, play tennis, and I am an amateur groupie for the band ?Rascal Flatts.?? I also, love the beach and have a small condo in Florida which I hope to use as my ?writing cave.?

Morgen: How lovely. I?m a sea-lover and ended up in the middle the country? literally (3 hours from the coast). Thank you, Connie.

Man's best friend may make a positive difference in the workplace by reducing stress and making the job more satisfying for other employees, according to a Virginia Commonwealth University study.

Stress is a major contributor to employee absenteeism, morale and burnout and results in significant loss of productivity and resources. But a preliminary study, published in the March issue of the International Journal of Workplace Health Management, found that dogs in the workplace may buffer the impact of stress during the workday for their owners and make the job more satisfying for those with whom they come into contact.

The VCU researchers compared employees who bring their dogs to work, employees who do not bring their dogs to work and employees without pets in the areas of stress, job satisfaction, organizational commitment and support.

"Although preliminary, this study provides the first quantitative study of the effects of employees' pet dogs in the workplace setting on employee stress, job satisfaction, support and commitment," said principal investigator Randolph T. Barker, Ph.D., professor of management in the VCU School of Business.

"Dogs in the workplace can make a positive difference," he said. "The differences in perceived stress between days the dog was present and absent were significant. The employees as a whole had higher job satisfaction than industry norms."

The study took place at Replacements, Ltd., a service-manufacturing-retail company located in Greensboro, N.C., which employs approximately 550 people. Approximately 20 to 30 dogs are on the company premises each day. The study took place over a period of one work week in the company setting, during which time participants completed surveys and collected saliva samples. Pagers were assigned to prompt employees to complete surveys during the day.

The researchers did not observe a difference between the three employee groups on stress hormone levels, which was measured via a saliva sample, in the morning, but during the course of the work day, self-reported stress declined for employees with their dogs present and increased for non-pet owners and dog owners who did not bring their dogs to work. The team noted that stress significantly rose during the day when owners left their dogs at home compared to days they brought them to work.

According to Barker, the team observed unique dog-related communication in the workplace that may contribute to employee performance and satisfaction. For example, he said, although not part of the study, that employees without a dog were observed requesting to take a co-worker's dog out on a break. These were brief, positive exchanges as the dogs were taken and returned and also resulted in an employee break involving exercise.

Barker said that other findings revealed mostly positive comments from employees such as "pets in the workplace can be a great bonus for employee morale ?," "having dogs here is great stress relief" and "dogs are positive; dogs increase coworker cooperation."

"The effect of pets in reducing the impact of stress and enhancing communication found in other settings may extend to the workplace," said Barker.

"Pet presence may serve as a low-cost, wellness intervention readily available to many organizations and may enhance organizational satisfaction and perceptions of support. Of course, it is important to have policies in place to ensure only friendly, clean and well-behaved pets are present in the workplace," he said.

According to Barker, further research with larger sample sizes within the organizational setting is needed to replicate the findings of this initial study.

Missouri Education Watchdog: Special Needs Schooling Especially ...

The assault on parental responsibility and parental rights just keeps getting notched up. Parents of special needs children may have been in the trenches longer than anyone else, and the battle there is very fierce.? They know they need to be their child's advocate, but finding the line between being an advocate and being a pain in the b*** seems to be very difficult.? Unfortunately, at the end of the day the decisions appear to be made on the basis of money.? With falling school budgets and the tight economy, the battle for money has become intense, and the children are the ones losing.

Take the case of Chuka Chibuogwu and the Alief Independent School District in Houston, TX. Chuka has autism and was in middle school when his parents, immigrants to this country, began asking the district to give him the services they felt he needed and was entitled to. The following details come from MyFoxHouston.

"When I went there I saw things no mother would want to see," says Neka of her visits to Chuka's middle school.

"My wife went to observe, found him squashed in the corner and nobody cared," says Kenneth.

"There was nothing I could do but cry because I was so shocked that such a thing could go on in this country," added Neka of the repeated conferences with Alief administrators ending in stalemate."

The family spent most of their life savings on "due process" which resulted in a stalemate.? The Chibuogwus eventually took their son out of school and began home schooling him.? It would be a sad case if it ended there, but it didn't.? The school district turned around and sued the Chibuogwus for the cost of the due process to the district, at the time $170,000.

The story became even more egregious when it was revealed that none of the school board members of Alief were even aware of this legal effort.? It was all done as a deal between the Superintendent and a lawyer, Erik Nichols, who had promoted a legal seminar entitled ?Show Me the Money? ? a how-to guide for extracting cash penalties from parents who challenge their public schools.

FOX 26 News obtained invoices which show the district?s taxpayers have compensated Erik Nikols and his law firm Rogers, Morris and Grover as much as $12,000 in a single month for waging the three-and-a-half year courthouse campaign against the Chibuogwus. Ultimately the district spent over $200,000 going after this family who was trying to advocate for their son. Why?? Well once the Federal 5th Circuit court threw out the district's case ruling that the district had no legal right to collect money from the Chibuogwus, the district's next action shed light on the reason why they fought so hard.

In January the district demanded, as a condition of settlement, that Nneka and Kenneth Chibuogwu sign a pre-drafted apology. In it the Chibuogwus would have to admit their actions were ?reprehensible? and that they ?bullied? and ?harassed? teachers and staff. They would also have to confess they were coerced to attack the district by the news media and that Alief provided their son with all the educational support he needed.? In short, they wanted to humiliate these parents as a warning to other parents who might dare to advocate for their children. At the end of the day, the district felt they literally couldn't afford to set the precedent with this family about providing special needs services.? In order to stem the tide of demands from other parents, they had to show that, "you don't go up against the district."

This case is not isolated. A similar case worked its way through the Bethlehem PA school district.? The court once again ruled that the district had no right to receive compensation from the family seeking special ed services.? In this case, the facts begin to show the blurry line that currently exists between advocating and harassing.

"The school district sued Zhou in 2009, alleging she engaged in "vexatious" behavior by refusing to approve special education plans for her sons, identified by the initials M.Z. and J.Z. The suit alleged Zhou demanded a series of due process hearings for her sons between 2001 and 2009, allegedly walking out of one and refusing to participate in another.

Zhou also demanded the district pay for a Mandarin interpreter for her children at the special education meetings, even though the family speaks English, the suit says.

The district demanded damages under a provision of the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act that allows school districts to sue to recoup legal fees when it can show a parent has abused the system by requesting unnecessary or frivolous hearings." mcall.com

The Bethlehem District claimed the Zhou's purposely drove up the cost of their son's special education so that it would be more in line with the private academy they wanted the district to pay for. That's if you believe, as the district did, that the case was about money.

Such was not the case in Kansas City where a parent with a deaf child was seeking special education services for her child but was meeting with resistance from the district. In that case, having the district pay for tuition to a nearby school that specialized in educating deaf children would have meant a $5,000 savings to the district. Of course public school money is never that clear. Losing the special needs student would have impacted their costs for teachers already hired to provide special education who now had one less student to teach, even though those teachers did not have the special training necessary to deal with a deaf child who wanted to speak instead of use sign language. At the end of the day the district's actions were based more on money than ideology or concern for the student.

Those parents decided to move to a district that had a better school for the deaf that was affordable for the family. This decision reaffirmed the parents as the ultimate decision makers for the child and showed that they were able to make a decision that took into account the needs of the child as well as the realities of available funding.

It would be unfair not to take the school district's position into account as well in this battle. It would not be out of line to claim that every Special Education teacher knows of at least one instance (and maybe more) where parents have pushed for more than their child actually needed or was entitled to. Take the case of the child who came from the elementary school with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for reading and writing. By the time this child reached middle school he was getting all A's in advanced classes, but the parents would not allow the district to drop his IEP and argued for every service they believed he needed. This meant that special ed teachers had to spend X number of minutes a day with a child who clearly did not need their services, at the expense of other children who did. Every district deals with these cases individually and worries about the precedents being set. Do they cave to the wishes of these parents because in the long run it will be easier and less expensive, or do they risk, by doing that, that other parents will seek similar services, stretching the available staff even further?

What motivates the parents?? Primarily it is concern for their children, but in some cases it is to game the system.

There is a misconception among parents with students who receive special services from public schools. A child who can maintain an IEP through high school may? get a special accommodations for the SAT or ACT,? which can include additional time, an alternate testing environment, and alternative ways to provide answers. These factors could improve their score.? For a child with mild cognitive impairment these accommodations could mean the difference between getting in to college or not.? That's quite an incentive for parents to push the system.? The reality, however, is that these accommodations are rarely granted by the ACT and SAT services. A child must be severely impaired to get extended time (e.g. reading at the 4th grade level in 10th grade). Meanwhile, children who have matured and learned to compensate for their disability are being told daily that they cannot do the work on their own.

When they enter college these kids are no longer covered under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA) which means no more IEPs or guarantees to education. Instead they are considered an adult for whom education is an opportunity. They are covered only by accommodations provide by the Americans with Disabilities Act. ADA's impact on those with learning disabilities, ADHD, low spectrum Autism disorder and other things that could be accommodated in K-12 is limited so parents with special needs kids need to do a lot of research about the programs available for their son or daughter at the various institutions of higher learning.

Meanwhile our system struggles to find that line between being the only voice for your children and just being a big loudmouth.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Decisions are still pending on a possible appeal of Sean Payton's suspension or an interim coach should his season-long punishment be upheld, a person familiar with the situation said.

The person says Payton, general manager Mickey Loomis and their staffs were in meetings at the team's suburban headquarters Thursday and focused primarily on preparations for next month's NFL draft. The person spoke to The Associated Press Thursday on condition of anonymity because the Saints have not announced their plans.

Payton's suspension in connection with the Saints' bounty scandal is slated to begin on Sunday, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said he has until Monday to appeal.

Payton has sought advice on the matter from his friend and retired coach Bill Parcells, who has told several media outlets he'd consider taking the Saints' interim coaching job if Payton, his prot?g?, asked him to take over.

"I had plenty of opportunities to do things with different teams, and I've turned them all down," Parcells, who turns 71 in August, told the New York Daily News. "But this one is special. This guy is like family to me. And if I could help him, I would."

Payton began working with Parcells in 2003, when he was hired as an offensive assistant with the Dallas Cowboys. The two have been close ever since and Payton, throughout his six seasons as New Orleans' head coach, has continued consulting his mentor on numerous matters, including how to handle preparations for the 2010 Super Bowl.

However, the Saints must clear up several matters before they can choose an interim coach. They must not only decide whether to appeal, but would have to see if an appeal resulted in a reduced punishment.

If Payton's punishment is upheld, the Saints could then proceed with finding an interim coach either from their own staff or outside the organization. If the Saints choose the latter approach and Parcells becomes a top candidate, the club would still have to interview a minority candidate under the NFL's "Rooney Rule."

There are also three strong candidates among Saints assistants to take over as interim coach: offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and offensive line coach Aaron Kromer. Payton expressed confidence in the abilities of his own assistants to compensate for his absence, but also has voiced some misgivings about saddling those coaches with additional responsibilities.

"We feel like we've got a number of good candidates" on the staff, Payton said earlier this week at NFL meetings in Florida. "The trick then is what it does to affect their roles that they currently have."

The debris, a fragment from an old Russian satellite named Cosmos 2251 that smashed into an Iridium Communications spacecraft in 2009, passed harmlessly by the $100 billion orbital outpost at 2:38 a.m. EDT (0638 GMT), NASA said.

So, how much of this junk is out there? A lot.

More than 20,000 pieces of man-made debris larger than a softball currently orbit Earth. Space junk travels at speeds of up to 17,500 mph (28,164 kph), so even small pieces have enough energy to cause significant damage upon impact.

NASA says the greatest risk from debris comes from untrackable objects. The Feb. 10, 2009, collision of the Russian and Iridium satellites added more than 2,000 pieces of trackable debris to the growing list of space junk. MIAMI — As Miami Music Week wrapped up, MTV News went back to where it all began, heading again to the Fontainebleau on Sunday for another massive record-label showcase.

Swedish House Mafia stalwart Steve Angello, joined by the brigade of ferocious all-stars that make up his Size Records, took over the same stage that deadmau5 and his Mau5trap crew owned just a day before.

But while the Mau5trap set inspired fans through experimental sonic patterns, Size came with one mission in mind: To lay down banger after banger, many of them Beatport.com-charting hits produced by members of the Size team. The third edition of the always highly anticipated Size Records party featured proven beatsmiths — some EDM vets, some newcomers. Indeed, Angello presided over a staggering lineup that included Max Vangeli, AN21, Junior Sanchez, Third Party, Tim Mason, Qulinez and Wayne & Woods.

Size newbies Wayne & Woods kicked off the night. The duo were followed by Qulinez, who delivered an impressive set highlighted by their smoldering bomb "Troll." Tim Mason pleased the crowd by covering hit singles "The Moment" and "Anima"; Third Party took over from him with a strong set that featured their 2011 smash "Duel" and their newest single, "Feel."

Feeling a bit of hometown nostalgia, MTV News was excited to see the return of legendary New York house icon Junior Sanchez to the Size closing party. The Brobot boss kept the hands in the air for virtually his entire set, playing recent anthems like Otto Knows' "Million Voices" and the Dirty South/ Those Usual Suspects collabo "Walking Alone." Junior also drew smiles from the crowd with his unique blend of Jay-Z and Kanye's "N---as in Paris" and Swedish producer Avicii's "Levels," a mash that was appropriately titled "N---as in Sweden."

Coming on last (but certainly not least) on the long list of talented openers were Max Vangeli and AN21, who were greeted with the energy one might expect for two of Size's original signees. Showing no signs of nerves, the pair put on a set fit to introduce their label's frontman. They doled out heavy party tracks like Dada Life's "Kick out the Epic Mother----er".

Sir Steve finally hit the decks, and partygoers at the Fontainebleau bum-rushed the stage, eager to rock out with the Size boss. And Angello obliged, unleashing track after track by tapping his SHM arsenal and much more. Fans danced in fits to Swedish House Mafia's "Greyhound"; Michael Calfan's "Resurrection" fused with Coldplay's "Paradise"; and Nari & Milani "Atom," among other hits. Angello just smiled, seemingly well aware of the euphoric chaos he was creating.

Unfortunately, Angello was forced to cut his set short at around 11:30 p.m. Still, what fans will probably remember is that the Size guys came correct this year, laying down the perfect ending to Miami Music Week.
