Relationship ? 10 Principles For Success | Relationship Blog

December 30, 2012

On the path to self mastery we must each address how to deal with relationships. The most common of course would be the relationships pertaining to love, courtship, commitment and marriage. Though different feelings are at play during each of these phases there are certain principles that are important during the interplay between all the personalities involved. These principles are in no way exclusive to amorous relationships, they can be applied to a variety of relationships.

These principles would encompass Trust, Honesty, Communications, Listening, Patience, Respect, Priorities, Commitment, Planning, Follow Through. These Principles are the foundation of any and all relationships.

Trust:

Whether you are dealing with a spouse, lover, friend, associate, work partner, family member or any other individual there must be a mutual trust in order for a relationship to be on solid footing. It is incumbent on you to instill trust and have trust in the other person or the relationship will eventually fall apart.

Honesty:

Any relationship that is not rooted in honesty will cause confusion and the personalities involved will soon assume that whatever is said may not be truthful, therefor the first principle of trust will never develop.

Communications:

One of the biggest problems with relationships is the lack of communications. It is perhaps the principle that is most neglected and the one that should be the anchor for a successful relationship. In some cases what is said can be destructive and other times what is not said leads to a breakdown that ends in a breakup. It is through communications that the principles of trust and honesty are established. Every effort should be made to communicate honestly without being obnoxious or destructive.

Listening:

In order to for a relationship to flourish those that are involved must develop the habit of listening. When you are predisposed to just thinking of yourself the other persons concerns are not addressed and important information might be ignored. Listening is an art.You will find that the more you listen to others and comment on their feelings the stronger the relationships grow.

Patience:

Relationships take time. They grow with time as those who enter into a relationship will slowly learn the depth of their feelings. In the process judgments can be made as to the worthiness of that relationship.

Respect:

Any relationship worth having must have a mutual respect. That respect must be inwardly as well as outwardly. When one person disrespects another in front of others (even jokingly) it is inappropriate and detrimental to that relationship.

Priorities:

If the individuals concerned have a different set of priorities then there will be a strain in that relationship. The importance of communicating and listening are the two principles which play a greater part of determining those priorities. Depending on how intense their priorities are will determine the success of that relationship.

Commitment:

A strong relationship must have mutual commitments. Whether it be as life partners or business partners there has to be a commitment on all sides. This commitment is made after the parameters of the relationship is established. Too often there is a lopsided commitment and problems arise from those disparities. Again it is important to communicate honestly and listen intently so there is no confusion as to the degree of commitment.

Planning:

Once things start falling in line and all parties communicate their needs, expectations and commitments then it would be wise to set up a plan to keep the relationship on track. When talking about planning it is necessary to put aside time. All relationships need defined periods of time for success. Marriage, sexual as well as platonic relationship, business affiliates and friendships need segments of time where there is interaction and communication.

Follow Through:

Once everything is communicated, committed to and agreed upon it is imperative that it be followed through. Too often relationships are destroyed because one of the parties does not fulfill their part of the relationship. Sometimes this is the result of outside influences, prior commitments, work obligations and things that crop up unexpectedly, however to develop good relations there must be some mechanism in place to deal with changes. This should be developed during the planning stage of the relationship.

Much of what I have written here is generic however the principles apply to any relationship involving love, lust, or social interaction with spouses, lovers, children, siblings, family, co-workers, friends, and supervisors. Following these core principles should help you to develop and maintain a good relationships or to discover that the relationship was not appropriate. I should also stress that one need not seek perfection in developing relationships since we are all human and have our own shortcomings. These principles are intended as guidelines and subject to individual perceptions of others.

Of course people travel by foot and by living and breathing animals. But, when it comes to longer trips, they have two different forms of transportation.

The main form being horse drawn carriage. Though, the horses aren't exactly the 'living' kind.

The horses they use to pull horse drawn carriages are made completely out of metals and are steam powered. Smoke and whatnot puffs out of their nostrils and they can travel far longer than a living horse can, not needing to sleep or truly eat like a real animal. Though, they do tend to move slower in the rain and cold weather.

Image

As for carriages, there are three different basic kinds.

The kind that only seats one to two passengers and has an open frame and is typically made of wood or very cheap metal, which causes them to be easily breakable:
(This type being the least expensive and the most often seen around.)

Image

The second kind is more expensive and is usually ridden in by doctors and priests and people of jobs along those lines. It is a semi-closed carriage, one that is made with somewhat materials than the cheapest one; usually metal and wood:

Image

The third type is the most expensive and generally ridden in by rulers and their servants when they travel together. This one is usually made of metal and wood, though the materials are far better on this one than in the other two types. Note that it completely closed off, somewhat like what a car of today is:

Image

Beyond the horse drawn carriages though, all walks of life take trains to further away trips. Though, the trains are separated by class and ranking amungst the people. The poorer folk sitting near the end of the train, while the more important sit in cars closer to the front:

Consumers and Debt Protection Products: Results of a New Consumer Survey

* Consumers and Debt Protection Products: Results of a New Consumer Survey

Consumers and Debt Protection Products: Results of a New Consumer Survey, Federal Reserve Bulletin, December 27, 2012

  • "Debt protection products help consumers pay off a debt or continue or suspend payments upon the occurrence of unfortunate and unpredictable events like death, disability, and involuntary unemployment. The products can be useful to consumers whose low levels of insurance leaves them vulnerable to such events. Critics, however, have alleged that the distribution method that takes place at the point of sale provides an opportunity for lenders to mislead consumers about the value of the debt protection or even coerce them into purchasing the product. This article reexamines consumer experiences with and attitudes toward debt protection products by reporting on new consumer survey results."

    13 technologies you won't see in 2013

    6 hrs.

It seems like only yesterday we were planning for the Maya apocalypse, but like so many other products, the 14th b?ak?tun (next era) has been delayed due to bugs and lack of pre-orders. Yet if you talked to some pundits back in 2011, they?d have told you that the end of days was coming out in Q4 of 2012, along with its competitor, BlackBerry 10.

No doubt, in 2013, several long-rumored products will come to market. However, next year won?t be the year for these 13 gadgets and technologies.

    Amazon smartphone

The speculation: After its success selling Amazon-branded Android tablets, the company will launch a smartphone that puts its content front and center and encouraging you to shop wherever you go. Some have even suggested that the company will make it easy to scan prices when you're in a retail store, just so you can see if Amazon sells the item cheaper. Taiwan Economic News recently reported that Foxconn will be manufacturing the handset, which will launch in Q3 or 2013 for $100 to $200.

Why it?won't happen in 2013: Breaking into the U.S. smartphone market with any hope of success is extremely difficult for new players. The four major carriers rule their networks with an iron fist, either forcing phone vendors to go along with their software?strategies or outright rejecting products that don't meet their immediate business goals. Just ask Google, which decided to release the Nexus 4 as an unlocked device rather than deal with AT&T and Verizon. (A subsidized version is available for T-Mobile.)

From a business perspective, playing in the smartphone space makes little sense for Amazon as the company's goal is not to sell phones but to sell media and dry goods through its online store. The company already has its shopping app preloaded as crapware on many Android devices, and the company could leverage these placements in 2013 by finally bringing Amazon Instant Video to Android devices and adding a price-scanning app to the mix. Why spend money building and supporting a smartphone when you can just get users of other phones to buy the all the same products from you?

    Windows?Blue

    The speculation:
Microsoft?will launch the next major version of Windows, codenamed "Windows Blue," as soon as spring 2013. The new OS will get at least annual updates over the air so consumers and businesses with Blue always have the latest verison of the OS.

Why it won't happen in 2013: If the rumors are true, a company that usually releases operating systems on a three-year cadence will suddenly start selling a new mainstream operating system less than a year after Windows 8?launched. And before Microsoft starts selling its next OS, it will no doubt go through months of public and developer previews as it has with Windows 7 and 8.

So, for Windows Blue to launch even as late as Q4 of 2013, Microsoft would have to announce a developer preview or public beta at the beginning of the year. With all the controversy surrounding Windows 8, news of another new Windows OS would convince users who were on the fence about upgrading to delay their purchases. Talk about Osborning yourself.

Google Nexus 4 with LTE connectivity

    The speculation:
When Google released its Nexus 4 phone, users were shocked to learn that the device did not support 4G LTE, the fastest type of mobile network.?To avoid dealing with carriers and building carrier-specific versions of its handset, the company decided to go with simple HSPA support, a decision Android head Andy Rubin called a "tactical issue."?Despite Rubin's comments, some believe that Google will eventually offer an LTE version of the Nexus 4, because it provided carrier-specific LTE versions of its prior-gen phone, the Galaxy Nexus. The Nexus 4 even has a disabled LTE radio inside of it, though this radio can only support a handful of bands that most areas of the U.S. don't use.

Why it won't happen: With the Nexus 4, Google is trying to make a point about its independence from carriers. Users who want a nearly-identical phone with LTE can already buy the LG Optimus G. However, not including LTE on phones is a poor long-term strategy. I wouldn't be surprised if Google's next handset, rumored to be the Motorola X, had LTE that worked with at least a couple of the major U.S. carriers' networks.

Wireless charging pads hit public places

The speculation: If you've been following the news lately you might expect to see wireless charging stations?appear at all your favorite haunts in 2013. This past fall, Nokia, HTC and others released phones with Qi-standard wireless charging support built-in while. At the same time, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf announced its plan to install compatible charging pads in its tables and Virgin Atlantic said it will offer the same in its airport lounges. Jay Z also announced a partnership with Duracell to bring that company's charging mats to several New York hotspots, including his own 40/40 club. Could Starbucks, McDonald's, 7-11 and Chucky Cheese be next? Not in 2013.

Why it won't happen in 2013: While many new phones this fall support the Qi wireless charging standard, Samsung and Qualcomm have loaned their support to the competing Alliance for Wireless Power (AW4P) standard. There's nothing like a standards war to make restaurant chains invest millions in upgrading their infrastructure to support half a dozen phones, none of which is an iPhone. Don't expect to see many more public places with wireless charging until Apple picks a standard and builds support into its products.

    Nokia's Windows tablet

The speculation:?Two years have passed since Nokia has jumped off the "burning platform" of developing its own phone OS and fully embraced Windows Phone.?So what does former Microsoft exec Stephen Elop do for a follow-up? How about releasing a tablet.

After all, Elop said the following when speaking with analysts: "From an ecosystem perspective, there are benefits and synergies that exist between Windows and Windows Phone. We see that opportunity. We'll certainly consider those opportunities going forward." According to one popular rumor, the company plans to release a Windows RT slate with a battery-powered keyboard cover early in 2013. The tablet will allegedly come with wireless 4G service from carriers such as AT&T.

Why it won't happen in 2013: Nokia has had enough difficulty gaining market share in the smartphone space and, though things seem to be looking up for the Finnish company, its Devices and Services division lost 683 million Euros in Q3. Windows RT devices like the Microsoft?Surface are by no means a proven commodity, so Nokia would be jumping onto a whole new burning platform at a time when it needs to show stability and success. I think they'll pass.

    Mobile payments become common

The speculation: If you have certain Sprint phones, today you can use Google Wallet to tap and pay at a handful of stores. On AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, you will soon be able to use a competing service called ISIS to turn your phone?into a credit card. With all this activity, you might expect that, in 2013, all the major stores would support mobile payments. Not so fast there, Ms. Kardashian.

Why it won't happen in 2013: You may see a few more stores add support for one or both payment standards, but many phones, including the iPhone, don't have the NFC chip necessary to support them. Even worse, consumers have few incentives to switch from old fashioned credit and debit cards. Forrester Research Analyst Denee Carrington recently told us that mobile payments won't catch on until at least 2015.

    More:??How to Fix Mobile Payments

    An Apple TV set

The speculation: Rumors of an Apple large-screen TV (aka the iTV) have been floating around for years. In late 2011, these rumors gained more credibility when Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs mentioned that the late Apple founder had plans for a TV set. In 2012, Apple CEO Tim Cook told NBC's Brian Williams that TV is "an area of intense interest" for his company. Now, many believe 2013 will be the year that Apple stops dropping hints and finally drop ships a product.

Why it won't happen in 2013: There's nothing stopping Apple from manufacturing an ordinary HDTV with iTunes and maybe some additional smart TV functions built-in. However, the company won't be content to ship that. It needs to partner with cable providers and TV networks, two very conservative groups, to offer a complete end-to-end service. It must also provide a better display than its competitors, perhaps an OLED screen that would push the price way up.

With the cable and display markets unlikely to change in the next 12 months, Apple will decide that it's better off pushing its services through an improved Apple TV set-top box, rather than getting into the TV business in 2013.

    More:??Best Smart TVs of 2012

    Self-driving cars

The speculation: Google has been working on a self-driving car for a couple of years now but it's not alone. Big automakers such as Ford, Cadillac and Volvo are developing their own autonomous vehicles. In the past two years, both Nevada and California have made the self-drivers street legal. Will we finally see someone selling them to the public in 2013? No.

Why it won't happen in 2013: Google's self-driving car technology is probably the closest to being ready, but the company is not an automaker and isn't likely to sell autos directly to the public. Even if one of the automakers felt it had a finished product, there are only a couple of states where drivers could use the car in its autonomous mode. With so much potential liability???just imagine the lawsuit if one of these cars caused an accident???we'll be reading about new testing and legal certifications for years before the first model hits a dealership.

    More:??High-Tech Cars Go Mainstream

    Motorola Droid 5

The speculation: Motorola is the king of the keyboard slider, having launched the original Droid with keyboard and then releasing three different sequels. The company's most recent entry, the Droid 4, came out last February on Verizon and launched on Sprint as the Photon 4G this past summer. If Motorola plans to continue offering keyboarded phones, it will need to release a Droid 5 some time in early 2013.

Why it won't happen: The other leading phone vendors have moved?away from QWERTY phones in recent years, either giving up on them altogether or releasing them as under-featured budget phones such as the Samsung Stratosphere. Motorola's new owner Google hasn't put keyboards on its phones and, when the company launched its flagship devices this fall, it didn't even mention physical keyboards. Sadly, it looks like Motorola won't come out with another high-end keyboard slider.

    BlackBerry PlayBook 2

    The speculation:
BlackBerry's PlayBook was first released in 2011, an eternity in tablet years. With the company's new BlackBerry 10 OS coming in January, some speculate that RIM will update its slate. Though the old PlayBook is still for sale, it has ancient specs like a 1024-by-600 screen and a dated design.?If RIM wants to stay in this space, it needs to release a new model. A leaked roadmap even mentions a 10-inch PlayBook code named "Blackforest."

Why it won't happen in 2013: Though the company shipped a surprisingly-high 255,000 Playbooks in Q3 of 2012, the tablet?has never been a considered a success by anyone's standards. Meanwhile, RIM is losing market share in he smartphone space and needs to buckle down and focus on its core audience: smartphone users. If the company turns its fortunes around with BlackBerry 10 phones, we may see another tablet, but not in 2013.

    A Facebook phone

    The speculation:
For years, we've been hearing that Facebook would release a phone of its very own.?In 2011, HTC even released the super-lame Status, a budget phone with the Facebook logo on it and some added Facebook integration. Could Facebook be planning to enter the market with a truly revolutionary handset in 2013?

Why it won't happen?in 2013:??Back in July, Mark Zuckerberg himself said that creating a phone "wouldn't make sense." To be fair, companies sometimes deny working on products that later turn out to be very real. However, in this case, you should take Zuck at his word. There's no real selling point to a Facebook phone when every phone on the market has Facebook integration. By making its own phone, Facebook might even alienate some of its partners.

    Flexible display phones or tablets

The speculation: CNET recently reported that Samsung Electronics will be showing off bendable displays at CES 2013. With the rumored Galaxy S IV phone expected to launch this spring and the inevitable Galaxy Note III, some believe we'll see the first phones to deploy this technology.

Why it won't happen in 2013: If Samsung's electronics division is first demoing the screen at CES 2013, it won't hit commercial products for at least another year. Also, in order for the phone itself to be flexible, the entire body must bend, something that may never happen. Samsung may use the flexible displays to create phones with slightly curved screens, but that won't happen in 2013.

More:??5 Things You Need to Know About the Samsung Galaxy S IV

    Google Project Glass for consumers

    The speculation:
Google's Project Glass augmented reality goggles will be available as a developers kit in early 2013. If developers get their hands on the product in January or February, a full-fledged product release can't be too far behind, right?

Why it won't happen in 2013: Google co-founder Sergey Brin told Bloomberg in June that he would like to have a consumer version of Project Glass "within a year" after releasing the kit to developers. While it's always possible that the kit will come out in January and the product will ship in December, it seems unlikely that such a unique product will make its way from prototype to final that quickly. Don't expect to get your headset until 2014.

Why Basic Insurance Is Not Enough | Estabrook & Chamberlain ...

Basic isn't enoughMany people think basic insurance is all they need.? The fact is, circumstances can quickly and? easily arise that can exhaust basic coverage limits and result in a significant financial impact.? One example of this is a real life case in which the 18 year old son of an insured was involved in an accident while driving a short distance to the store.? The car left the road, and struck a tree.? The teen?s girlfriend was traveling in the car and sustained significant injuries.? She was in the hospital for over a month.? Initially confined to a wheel chair, she was eventually able to walk with crutches and had to undergo lengthy physical therapy.
The driver of the car claimed he was cut off by another vehicle. However, since there were no witnesses and no physical evidence to support the driver?s claim, the insured?s auto policy had to cover the claim.? Luckily, the insured had a personal umbrella policy that provided additional coverage over and above their auto policy.? Without that added coverage, this tragedy could have had a much greater impact on the lives of all involved.? Personal umbrella policies can and do make a difference.? To learn more and find out how affordable they can be, talk to one of our representatives today.

Syria envoy meets Assad to discuss solutions to crisis

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi met President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Monday to discuss a solution to a 21-month-old conflict, which has seen violence rise across the country and around its capital.

The U.N. and Arab League envoy drove to the capital through Lebanon because of fighting around Damascus international airport made it impossible to fly - a sign of how the conflict is paralyzing much of Syria.

Brahimi told reporters his meeting with Assad dealt with the general conditions in Syria, and the two discussed potential solutions to a crisis that has killed more than 44,000 people, according to activists.

"I told him what I was seeing abroad and about the meetings I had with different officials in the region and abroad," he said. "The situation in Syria still is a reason for worry. We hope that all the sides work toward the solution, as the Syrian people want."

The meeting on Monday was Brahimi's third with Assad and violence has greatly escalated in that time. Rebel successes in capturing several military sites around the country, including close to the capital have caused government forces to hit back heavily with air and artillery strikes.

The fighting is now on the doorstep of Assad's seat of power in Damascus, with fighting in the southern districts of the city and all along the suburbs on its eastern outskirts.

Putin defends ban on US adoptions of Russian kids

Russia's President Vladimir Putin welcomes the leaders of member countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Moscow, Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012. (AP Photo/Yuri Kochetkov, Pool)

(AP) ? President Vladimir Putin says a draft bill banning U.S. adoptions of Russian children is a legitimate response to a new U.S. law that calls for sanctions on Russians deemed to be human rights violators. But he has not committed to signing it.

He says the measure, which received overwhelming preliminary approval in parliament, is also a response to an alleged U.S. failure to protect the rights of adopted Russian children.

Speaking at his annual marathon news conference Thursday, Putin said while most Americans who adopt Russian children are "kind and honorable," the protection for abuse victims is insufficient.

The bill faces a few more steps before it can reach Putin.

"I will make a decision depending on what is written there," he said.

The proposed adoption ban was added Wednesday as an amendment to a bill retaliating for the U.S. law. Several top officials, including Russia's foreign minister, spoke out against the proposal.

Putin's noncommittal response on whether he would sign it, along with his assessment of it as appropriate, gives legislators the chance to posture over Russia's wounded national pride but may allow him to avoid actions that would further trouble Moscow-Washington relations.

The Russian president previously had lashed out against the U.S. law.

Many Russians have been angered by cases of adopted children who have died or suffered abuse at the hands of their adopted parents. They also complain that U.S. courts have been lax about punishing abusers.

The Russian measure is named after toddler Dima Yakovlev, who died in 2008 after being left for hours in a car in the broiling heat. His adoptive American father was acquitted of charges of involuntary manslaughter.

"When tragedies happen, the U.S. judicial system doesn't react to that and avoids punishing the perpetrators. And Russian observers are barred from attending those trials," Putin said.

Small businesses offered ?110 million of new finance | Enterprise as ...

Small businesses struggling to access credit are to be given a welcome boost with ?110 million of new funding, Vince Cable announced today.

The Business Secretary pledged ?55 million of Government funding ? through a scheme called the Business Finance Partnership ? to peer to peer lenders and other finance suppliers.
Match-funding from the private sector is expected to lever in a minimum of ?55 million, making at least ?110 million available to lend to small businesses over the coming years.
The first four successful bidders for the Business Finance Partnership funds are:
? Funding Circle, which will receive ?20 million. It is a peer-to-peer lender enabling British people to lend money directly to small businesses in the UK and offers a faster and more efficient way for businesses to borrow finance
? Zopa will receive ?10 million to offer in loans through peer-to-peer lending. Through its website investors can lend directly to small businesses, offering a more efficient way of helping firms to access loans
? BOOST&Co, a new fund management company focused on lending to growing and innovative small businesses, will receive ?20 million to set up a fund that will make loans between ?1 million and ?8 million to small businesses
? Credit Asset Management Limited, a subsidiary of City of London Group plc which provides specialist financing to the SME sector, will receive ?5 million to provide asset finance and professions loans.
    Business Secretary Vince Cable said:
?Small and medium sized businesses need access to a diverse range of finance options, including non-bank lending. These new forms of finance are still small in scale today but they should, over time, bring additional choice and greater competition to the lending market.
?Today?s funding announcement is just the type of help that the new Business Bank will offer. The bank, which will be operational by 2014, is being designed to tackle these long-standing, structural gaps in the supply of finance for SMEs.?
The Business Finance Partnership is a ?100 million fund. The Government expects to announce the allocation of the remaining ?45 million in the New Year once due diligence is completed on the remaining bids still being considered.
The Business Secretary, who was speaking at the Association of British Insurers? Investment Conference, also announced that a network of 1,000 Business Finance Advisors is to be launched to help small businesses identify the best type of finance to support their needs.
    Notes to editors
    1. The Business Finance Partnership (BFP) aims to ease the flow of credit to businesses in the UK by helping to diversify the sources of finance available to them. It is part of a larger programme of credit easing measures announced in the Autumn Statement 2011 to support smaller and mid-sized businesses that do not have ready access to capital markets.
    2. A total of ?1.2 billion worth of funding has been made available, with ?100m allocated to the Small Business Tranche of the BFP. The remaining ?1.1bn is targeting all sizes of businesses, and being allocated by HM Treasury.
    3. The Government has already announced that it will invest ?600 million alongside an initial ?650 million from the private sector to create four new funds that will lend to mid-sized companies. These funds are now open for business and will greatly expand the market for such lending in the UK. The fund managers are Alcentra Limited, Haymarket Financial, M&G Investment Management and Pricoa Capital. An additional ?100m is expected to be invested with a fifth fund manager shortly. [http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/bfp.htm]
    4. Competition for funding under the Small Business Tranche of the Business Finance Partnership was launched on 31 May 2012 and closed on 4 July 2012. This first tranche of investment is subject to legal and commercial terms being finalised with applicants and parliamentary approval being given.
    5. Businesses that offer non-traditional channels of lending may not be regulated by the Financial Services Authority or the Office of Fair Trading and may carry a higher degree of risk than other investments. By making these investments the Government is in no way endorsing or guaranteeing any particular channel, platform or investment, and investors should not, therefore, in any way treat the Government?s involvement in an investment as an indication of the investment?s soundness. Private investors, in particular, should consider seeking independent financial advice before making investments decisions of any kind.
    6. Any businesses wishing to find out more information about the lending Funding Circle, Zopa, BOOST&CO and Credit Asset Management Ltd, should contact the organisations directly.
    7. Funding Circle is an online marketplace enabling savers and investors to side-step banks and lend directly to small businesses. Set-up in August 2010 Funding Circle has helped businesses borrow over ?60million. Each loan is comprised of small amounts of borrowing from many different people who compete to lend to the business in question, this enables the business to borrow at a better rate. With no bank in the middle both investors and borrowers achieve a much better deal with investors receiving an average 9.1 per cent yield on their money. www.fundingcircle.com
    8. Zopa is the peer to peer online platform that brings together people who are good with their money, to reward them with better rates on their borrowing and saving. Responsible, creditworthy borrowers get access to loans cheaper than banks offer, with no additional fees for paying some or all the loan off early. By lending to these people, savers get inflation-beating returns far higher than paid by banks? savings accounts. Zopa has now arranged more than ?250 million in peer-to-peer loans in the UK, all at rates that borrowers and lenders have effectively agreed between themselves. Zopa now accounts for around two per cent of all personal loans issued in the UK each month. Zopa can be found at www.zopa.com.
    9. BOOST&Co has been providing debt solutions to growing and innovative small business throughout Europe since 2011. It is management-owned and funded today by some of Europe?s largest private equity investors and family offices. It has offices in London, Paris and Berlin. The Business Finance Partnership funds will allow BOOST to provide loans to the UK small businesses at scale. More information at www.boostandco.com
    10. Credit Asset Management Ltd (CAML) is a subsidiary of City of London Group plc which uses a traditional merchant banking model across its business platforms to provide specialist financing to the SME sector. Credit Asset Management Limited provides leasing and professions loans. CAML also enables institutional investors to secure efficient exposure to the SME sector. www.craml.co.uk/
    11. The Business Finance Advisors, who are already accredited accountants and are familiar with business finance options, will offer advice on alternative sources to finance such as peer to peer lending and asset finance, applying for loans and overdrafts, and other issues such as business planning and managing accounts.
    12. A directory of the Business Finance Advisors will be launched in the New Year.
    13. The Government?s economic policy objective is to achieve ?strong, sustainable and balanced growth that is more evenly shared across the country and between industries?. It set four ambitions in the ?Plan for Growth? (PDF 1.7MB), published at Budget 2011:
    - To create the most competitive tax system in the G20

    - To make the UK the best place in Europe to start, finance and grow a business

    - To encourage investment and exports as a route to a more balanced economy

    - To create a more educated workforce that is the most flexible in Europe.
Work is underway across Government to achieve these ambitions, including progress on more than 250 measures as part of the Growth Review. Developing an Industrial Strategy gives new impetus to this work by providing businesses, investors and the public with more clarity about the long-term direction in which the Government wants the economy to travel.

    ReAbide ? myMCMlife.com

There has been a theme resonating through our lives for the past year or two? restoration. Actually, it?s been longer than that. When we bought our 1954 ranch nearly 6 years ago, we started collecting vintage furniture and accessories to match the era of our home. Jason and I enjoy a good vintage store or antique mall but more for looking than buying. We prefer the treasure hunts through yard sales, thrift stores and estate sales. We like sifting through junk and finding diamonds in the rough. They often don?t look like diamonds until they?ve had a little TLC. That?s where the restoration theme first started ringing. It was almost two years ago that Jason and I started talking about becoming foster parents. When God gave me a vision of ?the room? ? a mix of new and old pieces carefully selected, each with a story, coming together to make a beautiful space ? I started to connect the dots. Foster care is all about restoration, too: restoring love, restoring trust, restoring health, restoring family, restoring hope. Out of the steady hum of restoration ReAbide was born.

    logo

In short it?s a new business, Jason and I are starting. I have a full vision for 3 parts of ReAbide but for this season in our lives, only part 1 is unfurling: New Life for Quality Vintage Furnishings. Giving old furnishings a second (third, fourth?) chance at a new home. If you?ve been reading this blog more than a month, you know that Jason and I have quite a collection of vintage, mid-century modern furniture and accessories. Jason is a lamp fanatic? I think I?ve seen at least 12 since we?ve started unpacking. Since we have more than we need for ourselves and also because friends have started commissioning us for find things for them, we decided to start reselling some of our furnishing through private sales.

    reabidecollectionsample

The second facet of ReAbide Furnishings is home staging. We love putting rooms together and we love real estate ? home staging with mid-century modern and modern furniture was a natural progression of things. Many of the pieces we?ll use for home staging will also be available for purchase. We?re just starting out in this facet. We have a good friend who is a real estate guru and we were able to add a few of our items into the mix at a house he recently renovated. We were hoping to have whole finished rooms to reveal but he had already hired another home stager who scrambled our pieces in with hers. I did take a few progress shots while we were bringing in our collection, before it was all rearranged by the other stager and before we had brought in a dining table or rugs. Quick snaps with my phone but I?m glad I got them; better than nothing.

Google Play Books gets high quality read aloud, pinch zoom, recommendations

If you like having your classics read to you by your handheld device but don't care for the usual robot-stuck-in-a-well tones, Google Play Books has been updated with a more dulcet option. The "read aloud" function (which has been around for several versions, despite Google saying it's new) now has a high quality voice option, which only works if you're connected to the internet. We gave it a whirl ourselves, and it's now far more tolerable to listen to "Oliver Twist" or other flowing text books, thanks to a more natural sounding voice -- as heard in the audio file after the break. In addition, Google has added pinch or double-tap zoom options, text editing features for notes, personalized recommendations and "numerous bug fixes and performance enhancements." To give it a look (or listen) for yourself, check the source for more info.

NBA power rankings 2012: Wizards last in latest rankings

The Washington Wizards picked up their third win of the season last week, but that didn't stop them from dropping to No. 30 in the latest NBA power rankings.

The Wizards dropped one spot to No. 30 in SB Nation's power rankings. Injuries have been a big part of the Wizards struggles, but as Seth Rosenthal said, at least John Wall's condition appears to be improving. Wall's return could go a long way in helping Washington climb out of the bottom spot.

While Washington was last in SB Nation's power rankings, the Wizards checked in at No. 28 in NBA.com and ESPN.com's latest rankings. The No. 28 ranking is a two spot improvement in NBA.com's rankings. The Wizards moved ahead of the Charlotte Bobcats and New Orleans Hornets.

ESPN.com's Marc Stein kept the Wizards at No. 28 while noting the modest recent improvement from Bradley Beal. The Oklahoma City Thunder, who reportedly remain high on Beal, are No. 1 in all three power rankings.

Historic Ford Theatre Getting a $9.75M Upgrade

The John Anson Ford Theatre in the Cahuenga Pass will soon be getting a $9.75 million improvement, thanks to a unanimous vote Tuesday approving the funds for the project by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

The funds will be put towards preservation and repair at the venue, which "is one of the oldest performing arts venues operating in Los Angeles," notes City News Service.

Renamed in 1976 for John Anson Ford, the late L.A. County Supervisor who helped found the L.A. County Arts Commission, the site has actually been home to an ampitheater for theatrical productions since 1920.

If you've noticed that the bridge crossing over the 101 freeway between Highland and Cahuenga in the Pass is called the Pilgrimage Bridge, you're on your way to the Ford's past. In the early 1900s, Hollywood resident, fervent Christian, and lover of the arts, Christine Wetherill Stevenson wanted to put on her own play she'd written about the life of Christ. The ladies over at the newly-formed Hollywood Bowl group weren't keen on the idea, so Stevenson and another wealthy friend bought the land across the Pass and there she built her own darn theatre.

From our history of Pilgrimage Bridge:

The original venue on the property was built in 1920 for the performance of her play, and Stevenson "believed the rugged beauty of the Cahuenga Pass would provide a dramatic outdoor setting for the play." The structure was wooden, and was used for performances of the play every summer from 1920 to 1929, when a brush fire destroyed the theater. [...] It was, of course, called the Pilgrimage Theater. You will, of course, know the theatre and its location by its present name, the John Anson Ford Ampitheater.

Home to not only the outdoor stage that is popular in the summertime for their eclectic music, dance, and theatrical programming, the Ford also houses an 87-seat indoor theatre. This year, however, there will be no winter programming at the Ford, in prep for the improvements boosted today by the approval of the funds.

From the Ford site, Arthur Trowbridge, Production Manager, says:

"Although I'm sad that the winter play season is on hiatus this year, I'm excited that the Ford will be getting some much needed upgrades. We start this December with the removal of the seating in the amphitheatre, a complete resurfacing of the floor and the installation of brand new seating. Many more changes will be coming over the next few years, all designed to make your experience at the Ford that much more enjoyable."

The county has spent about $6.1 million over several decades to keep the site and buildings in repair and up to modern safety standards, however it's come time to make a larger investment all at once in order to preserve historic features, and repair and replace building systems.
